Latest On Patrick Kane

February 24, 2023 at 12:13 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 23 Comments

The Patrick Kane trade saga may be nearing its end, according to NHL insider Chris Johnston. In a tweet Friday afternoon, Johnston reported that a resolution to Kane’s situation is expected “in the next 24 hours or so,” well before the trade deadline on March 3.

As of now, Kane has reportedly not waived his no-movement clause to facilitate a deal, per Johnston.

Kane, who has spent his entire 16-year career with the Chicago Blackhawks, has been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks as the lottery-bound team continues to rebuild. Yesterday, rumors re-emerged about the possibility of Kane ending up with the New York Rangers, even after the team already bolstered their top-six with the addition of Vladimir Tarasenko. Kane, 34, has recorded seven goals and 10 points in his last five games, quieting many doubts about his scoring ability in spite of a bad hip.

However, Kane’s no-movement clause gives him the power to control his destiny, and it’s still entirely possible all the speculation is for not.

Adding to the rumor mill today, NBC Sports Chicago’s Charlie Roumeliotis reported that Kane was not practicing with the team, taking a maintenance day. Such a vague term is bound to increase speculation about whether Kane is being held out for trade-related reasons, health reasons related to his publicized hip issues, or neither.

Another Blackhawks trade target, defenseman Jake McCabe, also did not practice with a non-COVID illness.

Trade him already. He should have been moved years ago, instead of wasting away on a rebuilding team.

Yeah, that pesky NMC thing kinda gets in the way.

Yes to your comment, ChiSoxCity, but Bowman really screwed this team up bad. The way you avoid rebuilds is to trade your better players as they get older and get draft picks or ready now players. I’m not a fan of how Davidson is going about things but time will have to tell us that at this point.
And Kane taking forever to make a decision has hindered the team as well. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve that but now he wants to go to the Rangers AFTER their trade.
I’d be a little surprised if Kane gets traded but who knows?

only way Kane to rangers works is if they go the three team route for salary retention and trade Kaako.

Nope, waive Jake Leysision, and trade Kravtsov and it works.

      Yes it does.

Rangers have 900k. Trading Krav and Lech and waiving Halak for Domingue gets them to where Chi eats 50% and another team eats 25%

Lol at your kakko dreams. Its not happening.

he didn’t mention waiving Halak or else the math wouldn’t work. I also wasn’t saying Kaako would be traded for Kane, rather to make the money work, he would be the match salary wise

Kravitsov and Leschyshyn aren’t enough for Kane, especially the way he is playing now. Rangers already dumped their 1st. Only way it happens is with a top 6 type player or those two and a 2nd. Kaako’s name makes sense, he’s the right fit for the Hawks.

If David Poile were smart (okay, stop laughing), he would use the Johansen injury as a way to create cap space and take on some salary retention while netting a player like Kaako in the process.

Laundering an expiring isn’t worth anywhere close to Kakko. In Kane’s case 2.6M might be worth a 3rd or late 2nd. If it was a longer term deal they would just wait until the offseason.

good luck getting Kane for a 3rd or late 2nd if two teams have to retain. the going rate to retain 25% is a 4th.

Those multiple Max length $10+mil per into their mid 30s kind of deals have a negative side to ’em.

I would trade it for 3 Cups any day, though.

I haven’t been an avid hockey follower in the years since Brodeur retired, but I would think that certain players have earned it and that it would be very rare. Kane would be one of those. I’ve heard of “No Trade” clauses before, but I can’t say I’ve heard of a “No Movement” clause. I’d guess that would mean he couldn’t be demoted (not sure if that includes a rehab assignment), waived, or released either. I don’t know if that would occur with regard to an extra year at a high salary becoming guaranteed. If that were the case in the NFL, it wouldn’t have been the Raiders’ choice to release Derek Carr before his $40M+ salary for 2023 would have kicked in.

Smart elite players don’t sign without them. I agree that general managers are too casual with them. But Kane, Toewes, and Keith deserved them.

Kane isn’t moving for less than a 1st or a player with top 6 upside. Davidson has already shown he would rather hold the player trade for less value. That being said, Kravitsov is a name Davidson could try and sell this fan base, being a recent 1st rounder. The Rangers will need to pay a decent amount in prospect and draft capital to make a Kane trade work, cause its gonna require multiple teams, and will need to shed on- roster players to on top of that.

Kane is not fetching a first, he has a full NTC and can say I want to go to X, and Chicago can decide to hold him and let him walk for nothing or take whatever they can get. Stop pretending Chicago has any control in what happens if Kane does waive his NTC.

      Pretty much…

Unless Vegas is still interested and can do better than a 3rd-rounder, the Blackhawks are stuck in a “beggars can’t be choosers” situation.

Then again, the cap math may drive up the price as well, and since most of those calculations go way over my head, I’m not going to pretend I know what the final price should be. The Blackhawks have basically been selling off as much cap space as possible for both this season and next season, and they have done well so far in getting some draft picks in the process.
