Filip Zadina Activated, Sent On Conditioning Stint

February 5, 2023 at 3:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

02/05/23: With Adam Erne clearing waivers today, the Red Wings have recalled Zadina from his conditioning stint. He’ll be eligible to play in the Red Wings’ next game, which is Tuesday versus the Edmonton Oilers.

02/02/23: The Detroit Red Wings are on break, meaning Filip Zadina is going to get a bit of extra time to prepare for his return. The team activated the young forward today and loaned him to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint.

The loan can last up to two weeks, meaning Zadina can potentially play in five games before returning to the Red Wings.

Last appearing in a game on November 5, Zadina has been out for close to three months after blocking a shot against the New York Islanders. That means he’s only played nine games so far this year and has no points to show for it.

It’s been a tough career so far for the sixth-overall pick, with just 25 goals and 61 points in 169 games. Flashes of potential have come and gone without much consistent play at the NHL level. Last season he set career highs with ten goals and 24 points in 74 games, but those totals pale in comparison to the huge expectations he had coming out of junior.

Perhaps this latest injury gave him some time to readjust some things in his game and he’ll come back stronger, especially with the confidence that the Red Wings put in him last summer. Zadina signed a three-year deal that carries a $1.825MM cap hit in August.

His trade value is at an all time low. The Wings are stuck with him for a while.

He’s prime for a huge trade package

He’s an example of how the draft is just a crap shot. Obviously his potential expectations, based on him being drafted # 6 overall are well below how he’s performed. This is not out of the realm of reality as there have been tons of hockey prospects who’ve never lived up to their draft position. The Wings should have drafted Quinn Hughes, which makes the Zadina move that much more difficult to accept as they would have had a top pair defensemen now instead of a journey man 4th liner….oh what could have been

That’s Holland taking the advice of all his scouts. I never understood why people love to lay full blame on the GMs for players drafted. Blame the scouting department first and foremost. You can blame the GM for the scouting department that he hired lmao. Holland and his department have done well in Edmonton to date

Hard pass on him coming back. Stevie needstuh talk him up to some doofus of a GM. A compilation of every time he touches the puck is 95% turnover, 5% finishing off someone else play.

Im surprised Yzerman didnt trade him sooner, being a character guy and Zadina blaming bad teammates for poor play in the AHL, in an interview.

If he had a great coach, theyd have him picking up his head before making a play in the ozone, for hours on end, but most are about systems that clearly dont work and rely on having good players since they are ignorant on how to make these players great.
