Toronto’s Kerfoot To Have Hearing For Hit On Avs’ Johnson

November 24, 2019 at 1:09 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 8 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Alexander Kerfoot will have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety on Monday for his hit on Colorado’s Erik Johnson, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

The incident occurred during the second period of Saturday’s game in which Kerfoot hit Johnson in the back, which propelled Johnson into the boards head first (video here). Johnson, however, stayed in the game and Kerfoot received a two-minute minor for boarding.

Kerfoot has never been in trouble with the Department of Player Safety.

Refs only gave 2 min penalty. Think it’s fine worthy but hopefully he doesn’t get any games

Kerfoot was trying to apply minimal pressure on the forecheck. Johnson is losing his edge and balance. Not even a hit. Cannot believe Kerfoot even got a penalty. He barely makes any such contact with Johnson. What us he supposed to do there? Crazy. I see guys completely ram guys from behind in these types of plays from behind. And this is the play that is considered dangerous and fine/suspension worthy? You gotta be kidding me. The player with the puck is more than 5 feet from the boards, there’s barely any contact from behind definitely no pushing or driving into the boards motion. Only way this looks dangerous is because of Johnson losing an edge and falling to the ice.

He very clearly pushed him into the boards from behind. He was off balance but not falling. Probably not suspension worthy but it’s a dangerous play

Blaming a defenseman for getting cross checked into the boards?
This play is the exact reason for the rule, and should have been a major. Kerf doesn’t have a history of this type of thing, so I doubt he gets a suspension, but it’s gotta be a fine and should have been a major.

Kerfoot barely had his hands on Johnson. It looked bad only because Johnson began to loose his balance lost an edge and went down into the boards. Very minimal contact. Hope he’s ok but hear it’s a shoulder injury one that has kept EJ out before. But watch the video. It’s by no means a malicious play. No way to say it is.

He cross checked him in the back a couple feet away from the boards. It probably could’ve been a major

If Marchand or Chara had done this they wouldn’t even get a hearing.

They would absolutely get a hearing if they hit someone from behind
