Ryan McDonagh Acquired By Tampa Bay Lightning

February 26, 2018 at 2:09 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 20 Comments

Ryan McDonagh has been traded. The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired the New York Rangers captain, pending a trade call according to Bob McKenzie of TSN. Darren Dreger adds that J.T. Miller is also expected to be in the trade. McKenzie tweets that the return will be Vladislav Namestnikov, Libor Hajek, Brett Howden, a 2018 first-round pick and a conditional second-round pick that will become a first-round pick if the Lightning win the Stanley Cup this year or next.

Ryan McDonaghIn the biggest deal of the year, the Lightning have added that much-needed defensive help by bringing in McDonagh. The 28-year old former captain is a legitimate first-pairing player, but will be able to slot in behind Victor Hedman to give Tampa Bay two impressive pairings. They also completed the deal without giving up Mikhail Sergachev, who projects to be a long-term option for the club’s top-4 and can continue to be sheltered in his rookie while quarterbacking one powerplay unit.

Miller, 24, is another huge addition for the Lightning, who had been looking for help on the wing all season. Though he had been transitioned back to center this season for the Rangers, it seems more likely that he’ll move back to the left side as Tampa Bay still has a glut of options down the middle. The 15th-overall pick in 2011, Miller has shown a consistent scoring ability and is coming off back-to-back 20-goal seasons. This year he has just 13 goals, but has already totaled his third straight 40-point season and could challenge his career-high with a good final stretch.

The addition of both players pushes the Lightning back to a favorite to come out of the Eastern Conference and win the Stanley Cup, but did come at a hefty price. Though Sergachev and Brayden Point were both not included, the package given up includes several pieces with very high potential.

In Namestnikov, the Rangers are acquiring a 25-year old forward in the midst of a career-best season. The 27th-overall selection from 2011, he has scored 20 goals for the first time in his career to go along with 44 points through 62 games. He’ll immediately become one of the Rangers’ best options at center, but does come with some work still left to do. A pending restricted free agent, Namestnikov is in for a hefty raise—something Miller will also be in line for this summer—given that he has just two years before being scheduled for unrestricted free agency. Any long-term deal will have to come with a substantial raise from his current $1.94MM cap hit.

The prospects, Howden and Hajek, are both among the best in the game. Howden was selected 27th-overall in 2016, and still plays in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Despite the fact that he’s not yet in professional hockey, he does have some experience at the AHL level after playing eight games for the Syracuse Crunch at the end of last season. Since then, he’s put up 58 points in 38 games for the Warriors, and played a key role in Canada’s gold medal at the World Juniors.

Brett HowdenHe plays a dynamic two-way role, and projects to be an excellent center in the NHL capable of both contributing offensively and playing against some of the opponent’s best. He brings size and speed, and makes the Rangers future down the middle even brighter. When grouped with Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil, suddenly a position that was an organizational weakness a year ago now ranks among the league’s best.

Hajek brings his own high potential, and could turn into the best player in the deal for the Rangers down the road. A prototypical shut down defenseman, Hajek is an excellent skater that has continued to improve since being taken 37th-overall in 2016. He also has experience with the Crunch, playing eight games for them last season, but is currently with the Regina Pats of the WHL. The 20-year old can play various different styles and arguably becomes the Rangers top defensive prospect, even ahead of the recently acquired Ryan Lindgren and current NHLers Neal Pionk and Anthony DeAngelo.

The fact that the deal also brings with it the potential of two first-round picks makes it worthwhile for the Rangers, even if it hurts to lose two of their best players. After this trade and the others completed over the last few weeks, New York now has seven selections in the top three rounds this year including three in the first round, and could really jump-start the rebuild they promised their fans.

While the Rangers have completed what they promised to do this season, the Lighting are now ready to compete for the Stanley Cup not only this season but next. McDonagh carries just a $4.7MM cap hit through the end of the 2018-19 season, when he is scheduled to be one of the top unrestricted free agents. It seems unlikely that Tampa Bay will have the cap space to retain his services at that point, but if we’ve learned anything from GM Steve Yzerman over the last few seasons, it is to expect the unexpected.

Josh Jooris Traded To Pittsburgh Penguins

February 26, 2018 at 2:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Even though the deadline has technically passed, trades will still leak out over the next hour. Josh Jooris has been acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Carolina Hurricanes, the Penguins announced. Heading to the Hurricanes is AHL center Greg McKegg and Jooris has been assigned to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins to replace him.

An undrafted forward out of Union College, Jooris has carved out a role in the NHL for the last several years as a high-energy fourth line player. With 55 points in 204 career games, he won’t be relied upon for anything more than his usual role, but does give the team some NHL experience in the minor leagues in case injury strikes down the stretch.

McKegg was given a chance as the fourth-line center earlier in the year with Pittsburgh, but was pushed down the depth chart after they acquired Riley Sheahan. Now after adding Derick Brassard as well, his chances of making an impact with the club down the stretch were very slim. He’s off to the fifth organization of his short career, after being originally selected in the third round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2010.

Columbus Blue Jackets Acquire Thomas Vanek From Vancouver Canucks

February 26, 2018 at 1:49 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

The Columbus Blue Jackets have continued to add, acquiring Thomas Vanek from the Vancouver Canucks according to Bob McKenzie of TSN. Vancouver will get Tyler Motte and Jussi Jokinen in return.

Vanek is the definition of a trade deadline rental, and will play for his eighth club in Columbus. Last season he brought the Detroit Red Wings a third-round pick, but Vancouver decided to target a young player instead.

In Motte, the Canucks receive a 22-year old center that was only acquired by Columbus last summer. Part of the Brandon Saad–Artemi Panarin trade, he looked like a player who could compete for a fourth-line spot and perhaps move up the lineup if his offensive potential started to show. The former Michigan Wolverine scored 32 goals in 38 games in his final NCAA season, but has just 12 points in 64 career NHL games.

Jokinen will be joining his fourth team of the season, and is just a body to even out some of the salary in the deal. After being bought out by the Florida Panthers last offseason, he signed a $1.1MM deal with Edmonton before being flipped for Mike Cammalleri early in the year. He was then claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets, and now flipped again to Vancouver. The veteran forward can play multiple positions, but has just seven points on the season and looks close to being out of the league entirely.

Vanek looks like a great fit in Columbus, who have needed some help on the powerplay all season. After finding chemistry with Brock Boeser in Vancouver this year, Vanek has 41 points in 61 games and can still be a healthy offensive contributor in a sheltered role. The 34-year old was once one of the league’s very best goal scoring threats, but will only be needed to be a secondary option on a deep Blue Jackets roster.

Ducks And Islanders Swap Chimera For Wagner

February 26, 2018 at 1:16 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

The New York Islanders have announced that they have completed a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, adding gritty Chris Wagner for veteran Jason Chimera. The two teams swap impending free agent bottom-six forwards, as the Ducks continue to collect experienced depth, while the Isles strengthen their checking line.

Both New York and Anaheim are fighting for their playoff lives in tight races. The Ducks remain alive in a tight Pacific Division – they currently sit in third, but the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames trail with games in hand – as well as in the Western wild card chase. The Islanders face an uphill battle for one of the Eastern Conference wild card berths and have watched the Columbus Blue Jackets ahead of them add Ian Cole and Mark Letestu. However, they are certainly not out of it with more than a month left in the campaign.

This is the second addition for each team at the deadline. Chimera is neither the offensive nor defensive player he once was, but they add experience and leadership with this acquisition, much like they did with the recent signing of Chris Kelly. Meanwhile, Wagner will look to continue a career year with the Islanders as he has taken on more than just a grinder role in Anaheim and will provide a more well-rounded game when he arrives in New York. Similarly, defenseman Brandon Davidson’s play picked up when he returned to the Edmonton Oilers earlier this season, resulting in a trade to the Islanders for a third-round pick. New York GM Garth Snow continues to focus on safe gambles to add depth and upside to his squad, while Anaheim GM Bob Murray looks to preparing his team for the postseason by adding intelligence and experience.

San Jose Sharks Acquire Evander Kane From Buffalo Sabres

February 26, 2018 at 1:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The San Jose Sharks have acquired Evander Kane from the Buffalo Sabres, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN in exchange for a conditional 2019 first-round pick, conditional 2020 fourth-round pick and Daniel O’Regan. Kane has not signed an extension with the Sharks, and is still scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reports that the bidding was down to San Jose, Anaheim and Calgary today.

Evander KaneThe first-round pick is tied to the re-signing of Kane. As Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports, if the Sharks don’t re-sign the 26-year old forward before July 1st, it becomes a second-round pick in 2019 instead—unless the Sharks also win the 2018 Stanley Cup. It’s unclear what the conditions are on the fourth-round pick.

O’Regan, 24, is a former teammate of Sabres’ forwards Jack Eichel and Evan Rodrigues at Boston University and has played 19 games for the Sharks this season. Though he has just four points on the season, O’Regan does have some offensive upside and could jump right into the Buffalo lineup. He has 25 points in 31 games in the AHL, and though he’s a bit undersized could give them another option down the middle for the next few years. He’s a restricted free agent in the summer, but should be relatively cheap to sign for the Sabres.

The package Buffalo received for Kane may seem a little light at first glance, especially when compared directly to Rick Nash from this week. That’s likely because of the struggles he’s gone through of late, and his lack of playoff experience. Kane has just six points in 23 games in 2018, and hasn’t played a single postseason game in his nine-year career.

There is also obviously the case of Kane’s perceived attitude, which could have influenced the market that Buffalo was able to create. Kane has had off-ice trouble in the past, and though there hasn’t been much lately on any turmoil in the Buffalo dressing room, playoff teams often don’t want to risk their team chemistry on a player with a reputation. San Jose does have a strong leadership group, and decided that this package was more than acceptable for a player capable of scoring 30 goals in a season.

Columbus, Arizona Complete Minor League Deal

February 26, 2018 at 12:51 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired Ryan Kujawinski from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Jordan Maletta. Both players are currently in the minor leagues.

Kujawinski, selected 73rd in 2013, has already been involved in a trade earlier this season. In December, the New Jersey Devils sent him to the desert in exchange for Michael Latta. He played just 19 games for the Tucson Roadrunners, scoring just two points and now being moved once again.

Maletta on the other hand went undrafted before signing an entry-level deal in 2016. After a solid OHL career, the 22-year old Maletta hasn’t been able to keep up the same kind of offensive production in the AHL and instead is counted on as just a big bodied defensive presence.

Deadline Notes: Kane, Pacioretty, Glendening

February 26, 2018 at 12:19 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

This morning has brought some of the more surprising deals of this trade season, but there are still plenty of other names expected to be moved. One of those is Evander Kane, Buffalo’s pending UFA that has been on the market all season. Kane has had teams in and out on him, but John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports that four teams are currently talking to the Sabres about the forward.

The Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t among those teams according to Josh Yohe of The Athletic (subscription required), who wrote earlier today that they weren’t involved. The Penguins were seen as a potential fit for Kane, but after acquiring Derick Brassard might not have enough trade capital to really have any interest.

  • Max Pacioretty is another one of the top names remaining, and John Shannon of Sportsnet reports that there is still interest from both the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers. With the Montreal Canadiens facing the end of a disappointing season, Pacioretty has been rumored on the block for the last while. The return would likely be massive for Montreal, as their captain comes with another year on his contract at a reasonable cap hit.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs were connected to Luke Glendening of the Detroit Red Wings, but after acquiring Tomas Plekanec yesterday are likely now out of the running. Instead, Craig Custance of The Athleitc tweets that the Tampa Bay Lightning have shown interest in the defensive center, who is a faceoff specialist and penalty killer.

Canucks Acquire Brendan Leipsic From Golden Knights

February 26, 2018 at 11:25 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

The Canucks and Golden Knights have agreed on a trade to send winger Brendan Leipsic to Vancouver in exchange for prospect defenseman Philip Holm, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports (Twitter link).

Leipsic was selected from Toronto in last summer’s Expansion Draft.  He has been a depth player for Vegas this season, suiting up in 44 games while tallying two goals and 11 assists.  It’s likely that Vancouver is looking to take a longer look at him to see if the 23-year-old is worth keeping around long-term.  He carries a league-minimum $650K cap hit and is signed through the 2018-19 season.  His contract is a two-way pact this year and then becomes a one-way contract next season.  Canucks head coach Travis Green is certainly familiar with what Leipsic brings to the table as the winger played for him at the WHL level.

Holm joined Vancouver last offseason after spending the previous three years in the SHL.  However, he has played just once with Vancouver this year and instead has spent the majority of his campaign with their AHL affiliate in Utica.  He has been quite productive at the AHL level, recording 11 goals and 18 assists in 42 games.  The 26-year-old is making $925K this season and will be a restricted free agent in July.

Winnipeg Jets Acquire Paul Stastny From St. Louis Blues

February 26, 2018 at 11:17 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 11 Comments

The Winnipeg Jets have acquired Paul Stastny from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick, forward Erik Foley and a conditional 2020 fourth-round pick. St. Louis will retain 50% of Stastny’s remaining contract, which will expire at the end of this season.

Paul StastnyThe fourth-round pick will not be sent if the Blues sign Foley, who is a junior at Providence College and could become an unrestricted free agent if he plays out his entire collegiate career and waits until August of 2019 to sign. The Jets’ first-round pick is also lottery protected, meaning it will get pushed forward if somehow they end up with a top-3 pick. Winnipeg would need to fall out of the playoff race entirely, which is very unlikely at this point of the season.

Stastny needed to waive his no-trade clause to go to Winnipeg, and it doesn’t take much to realize why. The Jets are legitimate contenders for the Stanley Cup this season, and by adding another experienced center will be even tougher to take on in the playoffs. Stastny can slot in behind Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little until Adam Lowry returns, and be part of a nearly six-deep group of centers afterwards. The team will have centers playing the wing, when everyone is healthy, something that is becoming more and more desirable around the NHL.

Though he’s not the 70-point first line center of his youth, Stastny still has 40 points in 63 games this season, the fifth consecutive year with 40 or more. Unfortunately, those 805 career regular season games come with just 55 postseason contests, as his teams have had early exits in most of his playoff experiences. He’ll get another chance this year, and hopefully be able to take some of the pressure off the top two lines.

For the Blues, this is the second year that they’ve dealt a pending UFA despite being in a playoff race. St. Louis has had a rough 2018 so far, but like Kevin Shattenkirk last season, have dealt Stastny before letting him walk for nothing even though they still have their sights set on the postseason. He’s scheduled to be one of the top center options in free agency, and even ranked #8 on our Midseason UFA Power Rankings.

Stastny is on the final season of a four-year $28MM contract signed in 2014—when Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff also pursued him—but will only carry a $3.5MM cap hit after salary retention. That retention isn’t to old open cap space for the Jets, but to actually save on salary expenditures over the last few months. The Jets have plenty of room, but aren’t a cap ceiling team financially.

Waiver Claims: Stewart, Oduya, Alt

February 26, 2018 at 11:06 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As is often the case on trade deadline day, there have been several waiver claims around the league.  Winger Chris Stewart has been claimed by Calgary (first reported by Michael Russo of The Athletic), blueliner Johnny Oduya is on his way to the Flyers (first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman), while defender Mark Alt has been picked up by Colorado (first reported by Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic).

Stewart has put up a respectable nine goals in 47 games with Minnesota this season but has also been a frequent healthy scratch as his game-to-game consistency has been a concern, something that has been the case throughout his career.  However, he should still serve as a fourth line option for the Flames and with a $1.15MM cap hit, is certainly an affordable option to add.  Meanwhile, the Wild now free up a bit more cap space to work with which is important if they look to bring youngsters Luke Kunin and Jordan Greenway into the fold down the stretch.  Stewart will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Oduya is no stranger to being moved around the trade deadline day although this is the first time he will do so via a waiver claim.  The veteran had been shopped by the Sens prior to him being waived but evidently there were no takers.  He has four goals and four assists in 51 games with Ottawa this season but is averaging a career-low 17:12 per night of ice time.  It’s worth noting that if Oduya plays in 14 more regular season games, the Flyers will owe him a $250K bonus plus another $250K if they hold onto a playoff position.  He also has $250K in bonuses if he finishes in the top-five and top-three in average ice time per game.

Alt has spent the majority of the season while Philadelphia’s AHL affiliate in Lehigh Valley, posting five goals and five assists in 23 games.  He also has suited up in eight games with the Flyers, being held off the scoresheet while averaging 13:26 per game.  Alt will likely be a depth blueliner for Colorado and will be eligible for Group VI unrestricted free agency at the end of the season.

The other players on waivers from Sunday all cleared.  Those players are:

Christopher Breen (Boston)
Paul Postma (Boston)
Jussi Jokinen (Columbus)
Cody Goloubef (Calgary)
Lance Bouma (Chicago)
Alexandre Burrows (Ottawa)
Jim O’Brien (Ottawa)
John Muse (Philadelphia)
Chris Thorburn (St. Louis)
