Waivers: 9/30/25
The final day of September has once again brought a flurry of waiver activity. After 22 players were placed on waivers on Monday, all of whom cleared, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, another 22 players are on the wire today, per PuckPedia. They are as follows:

Some younger forwards stand out on today’s list. Olausson, Brisson and Suzuki were late first-round selections back in 2021, 2020, and 2019, respectively, but haven’t been able to grab a foothold on a full-time NHL roster spot just yet. Meanwhile, Gunler is only 23 and since he has spent a lot of his time since being drafted playing overseas, he’s still relatively inexperienced in North America with just 100 AHL games under his belt.
Among the blueliners, Phillips has seen NHL action in four straight seasons, all with Chicago, including a 33-game stint in 2023-24. Mackey was recalled and sent down many times on paper moves last season and has gotten into at least one NHL appearance in five straight years. Bayreuther is the most experienced of them all with 122 NHL outings but none since 2023-24.
With the belief that a few teams might be eyeing the goalie market, there are a trio of options available. Hogberg is the most experienced of the three with 57 NHL outings, including 15 last season. Skarek (two games in 2024-25) and Tomkins (six in 2023-24) joined new teams in free agency this summer and don’t appear likely to be claimed.
These players will be on waivers until 1:00 PM CT on Wednesday.
Jets Sign Tyrel Bauer To Two-Way Deal
The Jets announced they’ve re-signed depth defenseman Tyrel Bauer to a two-way contract. The restricted free agent will earn a $775K NHL/$100K AHL/$125K guaranteed salary breakdown, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Bauer, 23, will return to the Jets organization for his fourth professional season. The 6’3″, 207-lb righty has spent his entire career with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose since turning pro in 2022, serving as a No. 6/7 option there with a willingness to drop the gloves.
A sixth-round pick in 2020, Bauer was never a point producer in junior hockey, and that’s carried over to his time with the Moose. The Alberta native has only four goals and 16 points in 162 career AHL games, logging 291 penalty minutes and a -39 rating.
It’s a tad surprising to see Winnipeg dole out an NHL contract to Bauer since the possibility of a call-up at any point in his career is slim to none, unless he makes a move to forward to make him a more palatable enforcer. Nonetheless, it appears they view him as a valuable depth piece for his intangibles and will keep him in the system for another season after his entry-level contract expired two weeks ago.
Bauer will remain under team control next summer upon expiry. He’s still two years away from being eligible for Group VI unrestricted free agency, which he’ll almost certainly qualify for if he gets to that stage.
Winnipeg now has 43 contracts out of the maximum 50 on the books for this season and still has to sign RFAs Parker Ford, Dylan Samberg, and Gabriel Vilardi to new deals.
Winnipeg Jets Injury Notes: Ehlers, Capobianco, Barlow
Unable to play in either contest against the Edmonton Oilers earlier in the week, Nikolaj Ehlers appears to be out even longer. Still dealing with the lingering effects of neck spasms, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press reports that Ehlers will miss tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames, as well as Friday’s game against the Ottawa Senators.
Missing a handful of regular season games from 2020-2022, Ehlers spent one of his longest bouts on the injured reserve last season, missing six weeks of action due to a hernia. Only suiting up in 45 games, the Winnipeg Jets are hoping this injury does not continue to linger.
There is reason for optimism, as Wiebe notes that Ehlers is progressing nicely through the injury, but without being able to play a single game in the preseason, Ehlers may need a bit longer to acclimate himself than other players on the opening night roster. Although this is positive news in terms of his eventual return to the ice for Winnipeg, there is no specific timetable set for Ehlers’ return.
Other Winnipeg injury notes:
- In the same report, Wiebe writes that Jets’ depth defenseman, Kyle Capobianco, will be left off the roster for tonight’s game against the Flames due to a groin injury. Instead, the 164th overall selection of the 2020 NHL Draft, Tyrel Bauer, will take his place in the lineup. After agreeing to a deal with defenseman Logan Stanley in mid-August for the 2023-24 NHL season, Capobianco will be hard-pressed to find a spot on the Jets’ blue line to start the season, even after playing in 14 games for the team last year.
- Lastly, in his return from an illness that kept him out a few days, Winnipeg’s first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, Colby Barlow, will return to the ice with the team. Unable to find himself in the lineup for a preseason game up to this point, Barlow could see his first taste of professional action as early as tonight against Calgary.
