Calgary Flames Recall Radim Zohorna
The Calgary Flames have recalled forward Radim Zohorna, per a team announcement. In a corresponding move, forward Matthew Phillips and defenseman Nick DeSimone were assigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers.
Zohorna, 26, was claimed off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins in October, and has spent most of this season with the Wranglers. In 20 games there the hulking Czech winger has posted five goals and 16 points.
While he plays a major role in the NHL, Zohorna has been limited to a very small role in his five NHL contests so far this year. He’s averaging just over eight minutes per night, which ranks last among skaters who have played for the Flames this season. He’ll now head back to the Flames roster hoping to earn more trust from head coach Darryl Sutter and build on his 30-game NHL resume.
Headed down to the AHL is Phillips, who happens to be nearly a full foot shorter than Zohorna. The 24-year-old former WHL star has lit the AHL on fire this year, scoring 30 points in 20 games.
The many calls from fans to give him a genuine shot at the NHL came when he earned his call-up earlier this month, a recall that led to him getting into two NHL games. He struggled in those two contests despite playing in a highly sheltered role. Of the 9:02 minutes he averaged in that two-game stretch, he averaged 2:50 on the power play.
He didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet, though, and after seemingly struggling with the suffocating lack of space and physicality of the NHL, he’s headed back to the Wranglers where he’ll resume his starring role.
Also involved in these transactions is DeSimone, a 28-year-old blueliner. The New York native has carved out a nice career for himself as an undrafted player, scoring 15 points in 20 AHL games, a performance that earned him his first NHL call-up after Dennis Gilbert went down with an injury.
DeSimone didn’t play a ton, getting just over 11 minutes per night, but he got a short look on the team’s penalty kill and does look to be in the midst of his best season since 2018-19.
The two moves give the Flames just 22 players on their roster, meaning they have an extra roster slot at their disposal should they decide to recall a player like Kevin Rooney, who is now in the AHL after arriving this offseason on a two-year, $1.3MM AAV contract.
Also of note regarding the open roster spot is the recent revelation (as reported by Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960) that Gilbert has returned to the ice for practice, albeit wearing a full face shield.
Gilbert has been out since December 18th, and its possible that DeSimone’s assignment to the AHL is paving the way for Gilbert’s return to the roster in the near future.
Chris Tanev Activated From Injured Reserve
The Calgary Flames are getting a key part of their defensive structure back, activating Chris Tanev from injured reserve after he missed the minimum of seven days. To make room on the roster, Radim Zohorna has been loaned back to the AHL.
Tanev, 33 (today!), was injured blocking a shot against the Montreal Canadiens last week and missed games against the Vancoouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, and San Jose Sharks. The scary situation saw him fall to the ice motionless when it struck him in the head, before eventually being taken to the hospital. After all of the following tests came back negative, he was cleared return to the team.
The Flames went 1-1-1 in the games he missed and will certainly welcome back their defensive rock to the lineup for the rematch against San Jose this evening.
The veteran hasn’t been quite the player he was last season when he set a career-high with 28 points and received Norris Trophy votes, but Tanev is still a huge part of what head coach Darryl Sutter tries to do. There is no one on the Flames that kills more penalty time than Tanev, who is averaging more than three minutes a night shorthanded.
Calgary’s penalty kill is still ranked ninth in the league but has dropped down without him, as opponents converted on three of the 11 opportunities since he was placed on injured reserve.
The team remains just barely under the salary cap, meaning these short-term injuries can be quite difficult to deal with. Getting Tanev back so quickly was crucial, especially with Dennis Gilbert‘s own injury taking him out of the lineup.
Calgary Flames Recall Radim Zohorna
Moments after Kevin Rooney cleared waivers, the Calgary Flames announced a recall of another minor league forward. This time it’s Radim Zohorna coming up, with Rooney assigned to the AHL to make room.
Zohorna, 26, follows linemate Matthew Phillips to the NHL, who was recalled yesterday after an incredible start to the year. While the 6’6″ Zorhorna hasn’t been quite as effective, his 16 points in 20 games with the Calgary Wranglers were also impressive enough to earn a chance with the Flames. Claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins in October, the Flames managed to sneak him through a few days later when teams were finishing their final roster cuts. That was rather surprising, given the big Czech’s encouraging performance with Pittsburgh last season, which resulted in six points during his 17 NHL games.
Head coach Darryl Sutter has always employed size on his fourth line, and while Phillips is the opposite of that, Zohorna can more than make up for his 5’7″ teammate. The more diminutive of the two was skating with Milan Lucic and Trevor Lewis today, but it remains to be seen whether Sutter will insert Zohorna into that group should they continue to struggle.
Lucic has yet to score a single goal this season and is averaging just over ten minutes a game, while Rooney had just one point in 17 appearances. With a back-to-back situation (and three road games in four nights) starting this evening against the Columbus Blue Jackets, there may be a chance to move pieces in and out, trying different combinations.
Calgary Flames Claim Radim Zohorna
The Calgary Flames have claimed Radim Zohorna off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Zohorna, though not cut by the Penguins yet, had been placed on waivers yesterday along with several players ticketed for the minor leagues. He won’t be at risk of that now, as he joins the Flames and will have to stay on the NHL roster.
Zohorna, 26, was kind of a surprise add to waivers yesterday after his performance last year and potential upside. The 6’6″ forward had six points in 17 games with the Penguins, adding 23 hits in the process. That kind of physicality and size should fit right in with the Flames’ bottom-six if he can earn himself regular playing time in Calgary.
Though he played wing for most of his time in Pittsburgh last year, Zohorna does have the ability to play center as well. In fact, he was skating between Danton Heinen and Kasperi Kapanen earlier today as a potential fill-in for Teddy Blueger, out for the time being. Whether he’ll be used in that capacity in Calgary remains to be seen but between him, Adam Ruzicka, Cody Eakin, and Trevor Lewis, the team has several options for the middle of the ice on the fourth line.
One player that likely benefits from the claim is Ryan Poehling, who figures to mix in as the team’s depth center now. While Jeff Carter and Blueger are both getting closer to a return, a young player like Poehling could get some more looks in the meantime.
Pittsburgh Penguins Recall Radim Zohorna
With Sidney Crosby‘s uncertain status for tomorrow night, the Pittsburgh Penguins have made an addition to the roster. Radim Zohorna has been recalled from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, despite the AHL club having their own postseason match this evening.
Zohorna, 26, is not exactly a prospect, even though he has just 25 games of NHL experience to this point. The long-time Czech league player came to the Pittsburgh organization in 2020-21 and has done nothing but produce at whatever level he’s asked to play. In the NHL this season, he had six points in 17 games, while racking up 23 hits with his 6’6″ frame in just over ten minutes of ice time per night. In the minors, those numbers increased to 12 goals and 21 points in 39 games, before really making an impact for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the postseason.
Through four games in the Calder Cup playoffs, Zohorna already has five points, recording at least one in all three first-round games against the Hershey Bears. As an injury replacement, if he does enter the lineup, you could certainly do worse than the intimidating, versatile forward, even though filling Crosby’s skates is obviously an impossible task if he is indeed held out.

Metropolitan Notes: Trocheck, Pulock, Zohorna
The Hurricanes plan to revisit extension talks with pending UFA center Vincent Trocheck soon, GM Don Waddell told Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic (subscription link). The two sides discussed a new deal earlier in the season but tabled those talks when there was no progress being made. The 28-year-old has done a nice job rebuilding his value since coming over in a trade from Florida in 2020. At that time, his role and production have dipped but with Carolina, he has become an important part of their top six while becoming particularly sharp at the faceoff dot. He’s playing at close to a 60-point pace this season and knowing how high the demand for quality centers can be in free agency, his camp can certainly make a case for an increase on his current $4.75MM AAV. However, that type of contract could be tough to fit into Carolina’s long-term cap structure.

- While Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock returned to play in a pair of games before the All-Star Break, he told reporters, including Ethan Sears of the New York Post, that he still isn’t fully healthy. The 27-year-old, when healthy, is New York’s top blueliner and often logs over 22 minutes a game. However, he has missed most of the season with a lower-body injury and played under 17 minutes in both contests after his return. The All-Star break is well-timed for him in that respect as it gives him another extended rest to try to get back to full health to try to finish his season on a high note.
- While Penguins forward Radim Zohorna has seen very limited action with Pittsburgh (just six games this season after eight appearances last year), head coach Mike Sullivan still has high hopes for the 25-year-old. He told Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that they view Zohorna as someone that could be a top-nine piece for Pittsburgh moving forward. If Sullivan is that high on Zohorna’s upside, it will be interesting to see if they find a way to use him more regularly in the second half of the season.
