Mason Marchment To Sit Out For Dallas Stars
Saad Yousuf of The Athletic reports that Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment will be out of tonight’s game against the Vancouver Canucks with an upper-body injury. Yousuf also mentions that Marchment has been flown back to Dallas, which likely means he will not play in the team’s upcoming games against the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.
After signing a 4-year, $18MM with Dallas this past summer, Marchment has been primarily playing on a line with Tyler Seguin. One of the major themes heading into the trade deadline was that the Stars were looking for another top-six forward to play on that line. After addressing the issue by acquiring Max Domi from the Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas is now back to square one after losing Marchment.
After scoring a career-high 47 points in 54 games last season for the Florida Panthers, Marchment has become a valuable piece of the Stars’ forward unit, producing 31 points in 67 games so far this year. Enjoying a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games, the Stars have lengthened their lead as the top team in the Central Division. Heading into play Tuesday night, they sit three points ahead of the second-place Minnesota Wild, with the same amount of games played.
Mason Marchment Fined For Embellishment
The NHL has fined Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment $2,000 for diving/embellishment following an incident on December 8 against the Ottawa Senators, when Derick Brassard was issued a hooking penalty. The first such incident only results in a warning, meaning this was the second time Marchment had been caught this season.
The original incident was a game against the Colorado Avalanche on November 26.
While a $2,000 fine certainly won’t affect Marchment’s financial standing very much, it should be noted that these punishments escalate and can result in fines for the head coach. If a team is involved in four incidents in a single season, the coach will start having to pay his own penalties. The escalation looks like this:

Costing your coach money certainly isn’t a place most players want to be in, even if you have the security of a multi-year deal.
Evening Notes: Stars, Letang, Samsonov
The Dallas Stars are off to a strong start under new head coach Pete DeBoer, and they’re looking to get stronger. Per TSN’s Darren Dreger on tonight’s edition of Insider Trading, the Stars are still looking to add a top-six forward, preferably to play with Tyler Seguin and Mason Marchment.
They’ve had a rotating cast playing on the wing with those two, and although Seguin and Marchment have played well, they’d obviously like some added depth and to get a player that boasts chemistry with them. Jamie Benn is having a resurgence in limited minutes, scoring 26 points in 23 games, and they’d prefer to keep his ice time down below 15-16 minutes. If nothing comes to fruition, the strong performances of youngsters Ty Dellandrea and Wyatt Johnston should still safeguard their depth scoring.
- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has been in and out of the lineup recently, and he’s missing another contest tonight. Letang is absent from their game against the Carolina Hurricanes with an undisclosed illness, the team announced before puck drop. It’s his second missed game of the season after missing a game earlier this month, also with an illness. He revealed weeks ago that he had been battling an illness for a stretch of games; whether or not this is a related illness is unclear.
- Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov says he’s pain-free after his knee injury and is “ready to play,” according to TSN’s Mark Masters. Head coach Sheldon Keefe pumped the brakes on his status, however, saying the team would check on him tomorrow to determine his return to play. The young netminder, who had a strong start to the season, has missed nearly a month.
Dallas Stars Sign Mason Marchment
1:07 pm: The Dallas Stars have swooped in under the wire, inking Marchment to a four-year contract worth roughly $4.5MM per season, per a team announcement. Marchment is fresh off of a breakout season for the Florida Panthers, where he scored 47 points in 54 games on the Panthers’ high-powered attack.
Marchment, 27, is a risky investment for the Stars but one with significant upside potential. Marchment was brilliant in 2021-22, scoring at nearly a point-per-game rate and making his impact felt on both ends of the ice. Marchment got his 47 points with very little power play time, making his offensive numbers even more impressive. The biggest risk with Marchment is simply the fact that before this season, it was unthinkable that Marchment could make $4.5MM on a multi-year deal. The production is the production, and the Stars are absolutely not simply basing this deal off of Marchment’s numbers alone, but one has to wonder if he’ll be able to replicate the performance away from the Panthers’ offensive machine.
If he can, this deal will age very, very well. If he can’t, well, it won’t. There is obviously a middle ground here where Marchment settles into a middle-six role, and that is definitely a realistic possibility. But it’s also a possibility that Marchment can’t replicate the success he found in Florida. For a team that wants to continue competing in a difficult Central Division, it’s not a bad risk to take.
