Friedman’s Latest: Florida, Alzner, Virtanen
In Elliotte Friedman’s latest wonderful 30 Thoughts column, the Sportsnet reporter goes in detail on Florida’s recent philosophical change that resulted in the firing of head coach Gerard Gallant last week. Comparing the Panthers to baseballs Pittsburgh Pirates of 2013 – a team that completely bought into an analytical approach and made the playoffs for the first time in twenty years. The Panthers are trying similarly to buy-in to a game-changing approach, even after the most successful season in franchise history.
Part of the turnaround will hopefully be Tom Rowe stepping from the front office to behind the bench, but Friedman has another note. The Panthers moved Dave Bolland out this summer to clear cap room for a major acquisition in-season. Whoever that ends up being, combined with the return of Jonathan Huberdeau could be a huge swing for the Panthers down the stretch. It cost Lawson Crouse to rid themselves of Bolland, meaning they better take advantage of the cap space it bought them.
- In looking at the upcoming free agent class, Friedman zones in on two names in particular. Kevin Shattenkirk, who has been widely talked about since the last draft as being a possible trade candidate, and Karl Alzner, the steady Washington defenseman who is said to be looking for somewhere between $5.5-6MM dollars this summer. Alzner has been a rock for the Capitals, but with shrinking cap space the team likely won’t be able to afford him past this season. If he does make it to the open market, Friedman points to Western Canada for hints on who will be after the former Team Canada captain (World Junior’s, 2008).
- The Buffalo Sabres are still a rebuilding team, but have suffered through a ton of injuries this season and may not be as bad as their record looks. Interestingly, Friedman reports that the team has been scouting a ton of the Vancouver Canucks’ AHL affiliate Utica. While he opines that the team is watching Jake Virtanen who has been up and down all year between the two clubs, perhaps something other than Evander Kane was brought up when Buffalo and Vancouver were talking earlier this year.
Canucks Send Jake Virtanen To AHL Comets
Jake Virtanen might be starting to feel like a yo-yo.
After he started the year in the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks sent Virtanen to their AHL farm team, the Utica Comets. He played two games for the Comets last weekend (no points) before being called back up to the NHL. GM Jim Benning called it a conditioning stint. But Virtanen didn’t return to the Canucks lineup after being recalled; he was scratched in both games the Canucks have played since his return. And now, the Canucks have once again sent Virtanen to the AHL.
Virtanen has just one assist in 10 games with the Canucks so far this season. He was drafted out of the WHL as a power forward, where he had a respectable 161 points in 192 games for the Calgary Hitmen. So far, Virtanen has just 14 points in 65 NHL games over two seasons.
The Canucks drafted Virtanen sixth overall in 2014, ahead of William Nylander, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Dylan Larkin. It’s still early in Virtanen’s career, but it’s hard not to think the Canucks would like a mulligan on that pick.
Pacific Notes: Hamilton, Arizona Injuries, Virtanen
While the suggestion over the weekend that Calgary defenseman Dougie Hamilton caught many by surprise, TSN’s Darren Dreger suggested to a Montreal ‘s TSN690 that his name has been out there for a little while now (transcription from FanRag’s Chris Nichols):
That rumor has been fairly consistent. It really has. I can think back to the draft in Buffalo, where Dougie Hamilton’s name had surfaced at that point. He’s one of those guys, right or wrong, that always seems to have that lure about him or carry the possibility that a trade could be in the future again.”
While Hamilton has played fairly well with Calgary – he set a career high in points last season and leads all Flames blueliners in scoring this year – he carries a cap hit of $5.75MM for five more years. While that’s a fair market price for a top four defender, the Flames are spending nearly $27MM on their back end currently (and that doesn’t include $3.5MM for Ladislav Smid who’s on long-term injured reserve). In theory, moving an area of positional strength to fill a hole or two makes sense.
If Calgary were to move Hamilton, they should have no shortage of suitors as most teams are always on the lookout for a top four defenseman. Dreger feels they should have no issue moving him if they do decide to go that route:
“And there’s a premium market right now for defense. That seems to be the case on an annual basis. So if Calgary gets to a stage where they want to make that move, I don’t think it’s going to be a huge issue finding Hamilton another address.”
In the meantime, as we learned yesterday, the Flames are shopping a couple of veterans in defenseman Deryk Engelland and forward Lance Bouma but haven’t had much interest in either player just yet.
Elsewhere in the Pacific Division:
- The Coyotes are close to getting a pair of key veterans back as goaltender Mike Smith and center Martin Hanzal both skated on Monday, notes Sarah McLellan of The Arizona Republic. Head coach Dave Tippett is optimistic that both players should be back in the lineup this week. Smith has been out since October 18th with a lower body issue while Hanzal has missed five straight games, also due to a lower body injury.
- After recalling Jake Virtanen from his two game ‘conditioning stint’, the Canucks don’t plan to have him in the lineup right away, writes Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province. The team is looking for him to play with more intensity and consistency after a slow start this season that has seen him record just one assist through ten games. Vancouver also provided a couple of injury updates. Defenseman Chris Tanev will miss another ten days with a foot injury while right winger Jannik Hansen will be out for another three weeks with a fractured rib.
