Seattle Kraken Assign Jake O’Brien To AHL
The Seattle Kraken are continuing the trend of moving prospects in the Canadian major junior system to the American Hockey League for the Calder Cup playoffs. According to the AHL transaction log, the Kraken have reassigned forward Jake O’Brien to the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds.
O’Brien, 18, is only a year removed from being selected with the eighth overall pick by Seattle. He was coming off an exceptional year with the OHL’s Brantford Bulldogs, scoring 32 goals and 98 points in 66 games with a -2 rating. Although he was nearly 40 points shy of the league’s leading scorer, O’Brien’s final scoring line placed him in the top 10 of scorers in the OHL and was an impressive season by all accounts.
This season, O’Brien took a step forward in nearly every metric. As the new captain of the Bulldogs, O’Brien finished his age-19 season with 28 goals and 93 points in 55 games with a +34 rating. In the postseason, despite falling short in the OHL Conference Final, O’Brien was exceptional, scoring six goals and 23 points in 15 games.
Obviously, the Kraken feel that his offensive game is at the point where he won’t look out of place in professional hockey. He may not play for the Firebirds in the postseason, but being around the team and participating in practice will make his transition easier.
If his progress continues positively, becoming a top scorer at all levels would be the best outcome for Seattle. Partially due to coaching schematics and the team on the ice, the Kraken have desperately needed a high-production forward. This season, Jordan Eberle finished as the team’s highest scorer with 26 goals and 55 points in 80 games. Additionally, the team finished 28th in the league in total scoring.
As O’Brien progresses through his professional career, it’ll be important to pair him with a pure goal scorer. His vision on the ice is his greatest strength, as he can easily pass through defenders to find open teammates. Fellow prospect Jani Nyman has shown flashes of elite goal-scoring at the AHL level, though the Kraken may want to find someone with a higher ceiling to pair with their top prospect.
Canada Cuts Jake O’Brien, Jackson Smith, Marek Vanacker From WJC
Hockey Canada announced Thursday that they’ve cut center Jake O’Brien (Kraken), defenseman Jackson Smith (Blue Jackets), and winger Marek Vanacker (Blackhawks) from their preliminary roster for the 2026 World Junior Championship.
All three dressed in yesterday’s 2-1 pre-tournament exhibition win over Sweden, played in Kitchener, Ontario. That’s par for the course for the Canadian staff to get a look at their bubble players in friendly action before making their final roster submission, which is due before the preliminary round begins on Dec. 26.
Canada announced its preliminary roster back on Dec. 8, needing to cut two names before the tournament started. That number jumped to three when they added Vanacker to their training camp roster last weekend. Today’s cuts get them down to 14 forwards and eight defensemen, satisfying the IIHF’s 22-skater roster limit. They’ve also indicated they’ll only carry two goalies to the event, so one of Carter George (Kings), Jack Ivankovic (Predators), and Joshua Ravensbergen (Sharks) will likely be heading back to their club team in the next week as well.
O’Brien is the most surprising cut of the three. He won gold with the under-18 team at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup last season as a draft-eligible on his way toward becoming the eighth overall pick by Seattle.
This season, he’s been named captain of the OHL’s Brantford Bulldogs and leads the league with 35 assists in 27 games, adding 11 goals for 46 points. His 1.70 points per game also lead the league, and his +20 rating is in the top 10.
Smith is a similarly eyebrow-raising omission, but Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff relays that he had a tough showing against Sweden that hurt his stock. Still, he won gold with the under-18s last year at both the Hlinka Gretzky and the U-18 World Juniors, scoring four goals in seven games from the blue line. He’s averaged well north of 20 minutes per game for Penn State this season and has a 3-6–9 scoring line in 14 games for the Nittany Lions.
Vanacker’s late inclusion was more of an insurance policy if the Sharks opted not to loan Michael Misa to them as expected. However, that doubt was erased when San Jose officially cleared Misa to participate yesterday. He’ll head back to Brantford alongside his linemate, O’Brien. Vanacker’s goal-per-game pace so far has him in the OHL lead with 26, one year removed from a late first-round selection by Chicago.
Kraken Sign Jake O’Brien To Entry-Level Contract
2:45 p.m.: Seattle has confirmed the deal, although financial terms were not disclosed.
12:57 p.m.: The Kraken had 2025 No. 8 overall pick Jake O’Brien sign his entry-level contract during today’s development camp scrimmage, Kate Shefte of the Seattle Times reports.
O’Brien, 18, is the latest high-profile name to join a Seattle club that’s now rather deep down the middle organizationally. They’ve had four top-10 picks since their inception in 2021 and have used all of them on centers, previously selecting Matty Beniers, Shane Wright, and Berkly Catton.
Seattle picked the 6’2″ playmaking pivot right around where most expected him to go. For a 2025 draft tabbed as a weaker one, O’Brien carries a strong statistical profile for someone picked that late in the top 10. He was the OHL’s Rookie of the Year in 2023-24 and followed that up with a 32-goal, 98-point season for his Brantford Bulldogs in 66 games.
His point production was likely inflated somewhat – there were two 100-point scorers on the team ahead of him, and there are some concerns about his defensive acumen. Nonetheless, he’ll have an NHL-ready frame in a couple of years’ time once he adds some weight and is one of – if not the best – pure passers in this year’s class, multiple outlets say.
O’Brien may get a long look in training camp, but isn’t necessarily expected to compete for a roster spot. In the likely scenario that he returns to Brantford, his contract will slide to the 2026-27 season.
