Gage Alexander

Minor Transactions: 3/12/25

March 12, 2025 at 6:48 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While the NHL trade deadline has come and gone, the AHL trade deadline doesn’t hit until Friday.  We’ve seen a couple of recent moves on that front; we’ll go through those here as part of a rundown of minor transactions.

  • Earlier this week, Pittsburgh’s farm team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton announced the trade of defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov to Grand Rapids for future considerations. The 26-year-old had his contract terminated by San Jose last offseason but he wasn’t able to secure a guaranteed deal right away.  Instead, he played on a PTO in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for nearly three months before being converted to an AHL contract.  Knyzhov has seven points in 14 games this season and has 81 career NHL appearances under his belt.
  • The Red Wings have recalled goaltender Gage Alexander to their AHL affiliate, per an announcement from ECHL Reading. The 22-year-old hasn’t played in the AHL this season and was loaned to Reading, Philadelphia’s affiliate, in mid-January to get some playing time where he posted a 2.81 GAA and a .913 SV% in five games.  Acquired to match contracts in the Robby Fabbri trade last year, Alexander is a pending restricted free agent but is unlikely to be tendered a qualifying offer this summer.
  • Another former NHL player is on the move in the AHL, as San Diego announced that they’ve acquired Carsen Twarynski from Abbotsford in exchange for future considerations. The 27-year-old has played in 26 games in the minors this season, notching two goals and five assists.  Twarynski has 22 career NHL appearances to his name back with Philadelphia in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

Ducks Acquire Robby Fabbri

July 3, 2024 at 4:28 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 10 Comments

The Anaheim Ducks have acquired Robby Fabbri and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goaltender Gage Alexander. The conditions of the pick have not yet been revealed. Alexander is currently attending Anaheim’s development camp, which is set to conclude on July 5th.

Fabbri moves to Anaheim after a small resurgence with Detroit this season. He posted 18 goals and 32 points across 68 games – the highest he’s scored since he managed 18 goals and 37 points as a rookie in 2015-16. The performance was a nice bounce back to form after Fabbri suffered the second torn ACL of his career in March of 2022. The injury held him out of a combined 80 games across the second half off 2021-22 and first-half of 2022-23, with Fabbri totaling 46 points in 84 games in the games he did play.

Now Fabbri, and his $4MM cap hit ext season, will move to an Anaheim Ducks team built around skill, while Detroit hopes to add yet another top goalie prospect in Alexander, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s since played in his first two professional seasons – recording five wins and a .887 save percentage in 16 AHL games, though most of his time has been spent in the ECHL backup role.

Detroit coupled this move by signing veteran winger Vladimir Tarasenko to a two-year, $9.5MM contract. That leaves them with roughly $20MM in remaining cap space, with restricted free agents Lucas Raymond and Joe Veleno still awaiting new contracts. The Wings will be left one forward spot short after re-signing their RFAs, though that role could be filled by top prospects like Nate Danielson, Marco Kasper, or Carter Mazur.

Ducks Sign Gage Alexander To Entry-Level Contract

December 30, 2022 at 5:32 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Ducks have signed one of their 2021 draft picks, announcing the signing of goaltender Gage Alexander to a three-year, entry-level contract.  CapFriendly reports that the deal carries an AAV of $810K.

The 20-year-old was a fifth-round pick by Anaheim back in 2021 (148th overall) out of Winnipeg of the WHL.  Prior to this season, Alexander was moved to Swift Current where he was splitting time with Boston prospect Reid Dyck.  Alexander had the better numbers of the two, posting a 3.47 GAA and a .898 SV% in 15 games.

While most players that sign their entry-level contracts in-season typically return to their junior teams, that’s not the case here.  Instead, the Ducks have assigned Alexander to San Diego of the AHL.  With Lukas Dostal still up with Anaheim for the time being, Alexander should be paired up with Olle Eriksson Ek with the Gulls and get a chance to start his professional career in the near future.

Although he started the year in junior, Alexander will burn the first year of the contract this season even if he doesn’t get into an NHL action with Anaheim in the second half of the season.
