Chicago Blackhawks Re-Assign Filip Roos

After 15 games in the NHL, Filip Roos is going to get to experience the minor leagues. The young Chicago Blackhawks defenseman has been assigned to the Rockford IceHogs, according to Charlie Roumeliotis of NBCS Chicago.

Roos, 23, was signed to an entry-level contract out of the Swedish Hockey League this offseason, after going undrafted during his junior years. Stepping directly into the NHL lineup, he registered three points in 15 games with Chicago, averaging a little over 16 minutes a night. Like so many other Blackhawks players, Roos did look out of place at times. But overall put up relatively strong results for a player still familiarizing himself with the North American game.

The 6’3″ defenseman appears to be found money for the Chicago front office, who have added depth to an important position without using so much as a draft pick. While he may never become an impact player, Roos has shown enough to at least receive another shot at NHL minutes down the line.

For now, he can go and experience the AHL, testing himself in more high-leverage minutes and situations. He’ll be joining a loaded Rockford team that has its eyes clearly set on a Calder Cup championship, though things haven’t gone exactly to play so far. The IceHogs are 12-7-3 on the year.

When the Buffalo Sabres announced a gargantuan seven-year, $30MM extension for defenseman Mattias Samuelsson earlier today, it raised some eyebrows around the league – and justifiably so. Samuelsson has yet to score an NHL goal and has played just 54 NHL games, coming over the past two seasons. But as The Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski notes in his column breaking down the deal, general manager Kevyn Adams thinks Samuelsson and his contract and both key parts of his approach to building a championship contender.

“We wanted to be really disciplined and smart with how we put our roster together and the reason for that is we can do things like this and make sure that we identify the people that we’re gonna move forward with long-term and we know there’s more coming,” said Adams today. Buffalo is banking on development here, but the organization believes in Samuelsson and that he has long-term top-pairing potential. How that bet pans out remains to be seen.

  • After sitting out last night’s season-opening win in Los Angeles, Vegas Golden Knights forward William Carrier may be healthy for tomorrow’s home opener against Chicago, according to head coach Bruce Cassidy. Carrier has been listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury since September 26 but has obviously returned to practice. He’ll likely draw in for Michael Amadio if he does play, as Amadio was the only Golden Knights forward to receive 10 minutes or less of ice time against Los Angeles.
  • One of the more interesting names to appear on opening night rosters will be making his NHL debut tonight: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Filip Roos. The 23-year-old Roos is a rare case: a European, undrafted free-agent on an entry-level contract playing in his NHL team’s first game of the season. Roos had six points in 50 games for Skellefteå in the SHL last season and will suit up on the third pairing alongside Alec Regula.

The Chicago Blackhawks have finally landed their European target, signing Filip Roos to a two-year contract. The entry-level deal will carry an average annual value of $925K, and extends through the 2024-25 season. General manager Kyle Davidson released a statement:

Filip is a big body who possesses strong skating abilities for his size. That’s a combination of traits that teams across the league are always searching for. Filip played valuable minutes in Sweden’s top league this season and he will strengthen our pool of defensive prospects.

Roos was first linked to the Blackhawks in April when he was about to start his SHL playoffs. Unfortunately, he and the rest of Skelleftea AIK were eliminated rather quickly, with Roos recording just one point in six postseason appearances. While that followed his lack of offensive production from the regular season, when he scored just six points in 50 games, there is actually some upside at that side of the ice left untapped.

The 6’4″ undrafted defenseman performed quite well in the Swedish second league a year ago, adding 28 points in 52 games. His size and, perhaps most notably, excellent skating ability, make him an interesting prospect for the rebuilding Blackhawks. There will likely be plenty of playing time available in Chicago the next few years, and one way to quickly turn around an organization’s fortunes is by finding hidden gems in the undrafted market.

Still, given how little experience Roos has at the SHL level–this was his first season there–asking him to step directly into the NHL is likely out of the question. He’ll likely take some time to develop, either at the AHL level or back in Sweden for the 2022-23 campaign, where he is still under contract. He’ll have to be offered back because of the recently-signed transfer agreement, though only if he fails to make the Blackhawks. Even then, there are ways to get him to the AHL and into the Chicago development system, though that likely won’t be decided for some time.

Pontus Andreasson, Filip Roos Linked To NHL

Two more undrafted free agents could soon be coming to North America, as Aftonbladet.se reports that Pontus Andreasson and Filip Roos have both agreed to entry-level contracts with NHL clubs. The Swedish news outlet notes that Andreasson has agreed to a deal with the Detroit Red Wings, while Roos is in agreement with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Andreasson, 23, has exploded onto the SHL scene this season, scoring 18 goals and 38 points in 52 games with Lulea HF. It’s his first season at the highest level after spending the last two in the Allsvenskan, and it seems as though it’s been enough to draw the interest of an NHL team. Undrafted, Andreasson’s development has been relatively unnoticed, given he was never involved in any international play at any level. An entry-level contract would be limited to just one year, as he turns 24 in August.

Roos, meanwhile, would be signing a two-year deal as he only turned 23 a few months ago. He too has burst onto the SHL scene after two years in the Allsvenskan and is playing regular minutes for Skelleftea AIK. The 6’3″ defenseman had only eight points in 50 regular season games, but did show a little more scoring upside last season at the lower level, when he racked up 28 points in 52 games. Similarly overlooked when it comes to international competition, Roos is also an undrafted prospect has been relatively under the radar to this point.

The SHL quarter-finals get underway tomorrow, meaning contracts for both players would have to wait until after their team is eliminated or win the championship.
