Flames Name Trent Cull Interim Assistant Coach

December 22, 2024 at 5:06 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Flames have promoted AHL Calgary head coach Trent Cull to their NHL bench to serve as an interim assistant, per a team announcement. He replaces Brad Larsen for the time being, who’s been out on an indefinite personal leave of absence since Dec. 8.

It will mark the 51-year-old Cull’s second time serving on an NHL bench. He was promoted to an assistant role with the Canucks in 2022 after five years as their AHL head coach but was fired midway through the 2022-23 campaign alongside Bruce Boudreau. Cull returned to coaching the following offseason, signing on as Calgary’s AHL head coach. He replaced Mitch Love in the role after he moved to Washington to take a job with the Capitals as an assistant.

Under Cull, the Wranglers have a 55-36-10 record since the beginning of last season. Cull previously served as an AHL assistant with the Syracuse Crunch from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2013 to 2017. In the meantime, he was the head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves.

Replacing Cull as the interim AHL bench boss will be longtime NHL defenseman Joe Cirella. Cirella has been with the Flames’ farm club as an assistant since the 2018-19 campaign, which was prefaced by a lengthy career in the Ontario Hockey League as an assistant and associate coach. Cirella also served as an assistant with the Panthers in the 1997-98 season, his first after retirement.

West Notes: Jones, Larsen, Lomberg, Stephens

December 8, 2024 at 6:57 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones skated before practice today as he works his way back from a right foot injury, notes WGN Radio’s Charlie Roumeliotis (Twitter link).  The 30-year-old was originally pegged to be out around four weeks with the injury and he has missed the last three so resuming on-ice skating now suggests he’s pretty much on track in his recovery.  Jones has played in 17 games so far this season where he has 10 points while logging 25:43 per night, his highest ATOI since his first season with Chicago back in 2021-22.

More from out West:

  • The Flames announced (Twitter link) that assistant coach Brad Larsen has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the team to attend to a family matter. Larsen is in his first season with Calgary after joining them as an assistant coach this past offseason following a year away from the league after being fired as head coach with Columbus after two seasons.
  • Still with the Flames, winger Ryan Lomberg did not accompany the team on its trip to Dallas and won’t be in the lineup tonight, relays Sportsnet 960’s Derek Wills (Twitter link). His absence isn’t injury-related; instead, he stayed back in Calgary to be with his wife with the birth of their child pending.  Lomberg has three assists, 22 penalty minutes, and 47 hits in 27 games this season in his second stint with the Flames after signing a two-year, $4MM contract with them back in July.
  • A day after being sent to the minors, the Kraken recalled center Mitchell Stephens per the AHL’s transactions log. The move ultimately allowed them to delay his waiver clock by one day.  The 27-year-old went into today’s action with four games played with Seattle where he had been held off the scoresheet in a little over nine minutes per game of ice time.

Calgary Flames Hire Brad Larsen As Assistant Coach

June 11, 2024 at 6:00 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

After a one-year gap away from the game, Brad Larsen will return behind the bench for the 2024-25 NHL season. After a lengthy 13-year run in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, the Calgary Flames have hired Larsen to serve as an assistant coach on Ryan Huska’s staff.

Not only does Larsen have experience behind the bench in the NHL, he has also spent 10 years as a player having suited up for the Colorado Avalanche and Atlanta Thrashers. Larsen won a Stanley Cup Championship with the Avalanche during the 2001 Stanley Cup playoffs and back-to-back gold medals with Team Canada during the IIHF World Junior Championships in 1996 and 1997.

Larsen was named an assistant coach on John Tortorella’s staff in Columbus ahead of the 2014-15 NHL season and held that role until Tortorella’s exit after the 2020-21 season. Next in line for the Blue Jackets, Larsen was named the eighth head coach in franchise history on June 10, 2021. Over 162 games spent as head coach, Columbus compiled a 62-86-16 record under Larsen leading to his firing after the 2022-23 NHL season.

Now headed to Alberta, Larsen brings some experience to Huska’s staff in Calgary as the latter begins his second season as head coach of the franchise. In the press release from the Flames organization about the hiring, Larsen said, “I’m super excited to be joining the Flames organization and appreciative of the opportunity to work alongside Ryan Huska and his staff. I’ve had so much respect for this organization for a long time, its history and solid reputation around the league. As well, I have a great affinity for the city and its beautiful setting near the Rocky Mountains. I can’t wait to get started“.
