Winnipeg Jets Recall Arvid Holm

Oct 6: Holm has been returned to the minor leagues.

Oct 5: With just two games left in their preseason schedule, the Winnipeg Jets have brought some goaltending back up from the minor leagues. Arvid Holm has been recalled, after being cut a few days ago.

It’s an interesting one, given that Connor Hellebuyck and David Rittich are both still scheduled to dress for tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames. Likely just precautionary, it does highlight the lack of depth at the moment for the Jets. Mikhail Berdin, who would normally be considered the third-string option, is away from the team because of personal reasons. If Hellebuyck or Rittich were to suffer an injury, the 23-year-old Holm certainly doesn’t bring much experience to the table.

A sixth-round pick in 2017, the Swedish netminder has just 24 appearances in North America, all of them in the AHL. He posted an .877 save percentage in that league last year and is still quite a distance from being a legitimate backup option for the Jets. Hopefully, this recall is nothing more than an emergency backup and the two NHL options get through the last two games intact.

Winnipeg Jets Loan Arvid Holm To SHL

The Winnipeg Jets will allow one of their prospects to return to Sweden for the 2020-21 season, loaning Arvid Holm to Farjestad BK of the SHL. Holm signed his entry-level contract last month but will spend at least the first year outside of the Jets organization.

Holm, 21, was a sixth-round pick in 2017 but has been quickly climbing the list of goaltending prospects around the NHL. The 6’4″ netminder posted a .914 save percentage this year in his first full season in the SHL, along with a 20-10-0 record and 2.27 goals-against average.

The Jets have their net locked up long-term with Connor Hellebuyck, so they can afford to slowly bring along their young goaltenders in the best development situations. With the 2020-21 AHL season still uncertain, sending Holm to Sweden is likely the best way to get him playing time and move him towards his potential ceiling.

Jets Sign Arvid Holm To An Entry-Level Contract

After signing Kristian Reichel to an entry-level deal today, the Jets have signed another prospect, announcing that they’ve inked goaltender Arvid Holm to a three-year, entry-level pact.  The deal will carry an AAV of just over $845K at the NHL level before performance bonuses.

The 21-year-old was a sixth-round pick of Winnipeg (167th overall) back in 2017 while he was playing at the Swedish junior level.  Over the last couple of years, he has moved to the professional ranks and spent this past season with Farjestad of the SHL.  While he was the backup netminder in Champions League play, Holm had the bulk of the workload in league play where he made 31 appearances, posting a 2.27 GAA and a .915 SV%, numbers that placed in the top-ten league-wide.

It will be interesting to see what the Jets have planned for him next season.  Eric Comrie and Mikhail Berdin are both already under contract and will likely form the goaltending tandem with AHL Manitoba as they did this season.  Laurent Brossoit is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer so there could be an opening behind Connor Hellebuyck but it would certainly be risky to throw Holm into that role right away.  He could certainly suit up with ECHL Jacksonville but if that’s the level they see him playing at, a loan back to Sweden could ultimately be the better move for his development, especially with the start of next season at the North American minor pro levels certainly in question.  CapFriendly reports that Holm’s deal contains a European Assignment Clause.
