Seattle Kraken’s Yanni Gourde Suspended Two Games For Charging
Seattle Kraken centerman Yanni Gourde has been suspended for a charging penalty against Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm. The play in question occurred in the final few minutes of the Thursday night matchup, with the NHL Department of Player Safety saying that Gourde unnecessarily elevated himself into Ekholm’s head on the hit. The league also cited Gourde’s one previous career suspension – a two-game punishment for a hit to the head of Jordan Staal in the 2018-19 season.
Gourde has appeared in all 45 of Seattle’s games this season, boasting seven goals and 19 points. He’s also added 48 penalty minutes, a mark that’s tied with Vince Dunn for team lead. Gourde is in his third season with the Kraken, serving as the selection from the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. He’s served in a prominent role for the Kraken, averaging over 17 minutes of ice time in each season since. That includes the 17:48 he’s averaging this year, operating as a middle-six centerman and go-to penalty killer.
Gourde went unselected in the NHL Draft, instead beginning his pro career with the AHL’s Worcester Sharks at the end of the 2011-12 season. He scored three points in four games in his first taste of pros but struggled to maintain that production in his official rookie year – scoring just 14 points in 54 games during the 2012-13 season. He found his way back on draft in the following year, though, and was able to work his way into more prominent roles each season before eventually making his NHL debut in 2015-16 and playing his first full pro season in 2017-18. Gourde made a splash when he finally joined the Tampa lineup, netting an impressive 25 goals and 64 points in 82 games. That remains a career-high in goals and points, though Gourde has nonetheless remained consistent, scoring 48 points in three separate seasons since, including last year.
Hurricanes Place Pyotr Kochetkov On Injured Reserve
The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Pyotr Kochetkov on injured reserve. Team reporter Walt Ruff shares that this move isn’t indicative of a setback, but instead a corresponding move to Carolina’s claiming of Columbus‘ Spencer Martin off of waivers.
The 24-year-old Kochetkov has appeared in 23 games this season – more than any other Hurricanes goaltender – setting an 11-7-3 record and .900 save percentage. The numbers line up with his rookie season last year, with Kochetkov posting a .909 save percentage and 12 wins through 24 games. The Russian has become a de facto starter in Carolina just a few seasons after he was selected in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft. He was the second netminder selected that year, joining a class that also features Spencer Knight, Mads Søgaard, and Dustin Wolf. Kochetkov made the jump to North American pros in the 2021-22 season, earning his NHL debut in the same year. He’s since totaled 50 career NHL games, managing a collective 26-14-8 record and .905 save percentage.
Kochetkov has returned to the ice, working one-on-one with the team’s goaltender coaches as he adjusts back from an injury that’s held him out of the team’s last two games, suggesting he could return after his requisite seven-day absence on IR. That could quickly crowd Carolina’s goaltending room and force competition between newcomer Martin, Yaniv Perets, and Antti Raanta for the backup role.
Golden Knights Place Michael Amadio On IR, Recall Jonas Røndbjerg
The Vegas Golden Knights have placed forward Michael Amadio on injured reserve, as the 27-year-old is battling with an upper-body injury. Amadio previously missed a handful of games due to personal reasons and illness, but has otherwise played in 42 of Vegas’ 45 games this season. He’s managed six goals and 17 points in those appearances, putting him on pace for 33 points through 82 games – a mark that would represent a career-high, trumping the 27 points that Amadio managed in 67 games last year.
Amadio is in his third season with the Golden Knights, joining them as a waiver claim from the Toronto Maple Leafs partway through the 2021-22 campaign. He’s since served in a bottom-six role, averaging around 12 minutes of ice time in each of his three seasons with the club. The depth he provides was appreciated enough for Vegas to re-sign the forward to a two-year, $1.5MM contract extension only three months after claiming him. He’s serving the last year of that contract in this season.
The Golden Knights have recalled Jonas Røndbjerg to fill the role of the injured Amadio. He will join Byron Froese, Brendan Brisson, and Sheldon Rempal as recent call-ups looking to find their way into a Vegas lineup that currently has four forwards, four defensemen, and their starting goalie on injured reserve. None of Froese, Brisson, or Rempal have scored in their one or two appearances, while Røndbjerg has managed three points in the nine NHL games he’s received this year.
Buffalo Sabres Recall Jacob Bryson
The Buffalo Sabres have recalled defenseman Jacob Bryson. He fills the open roster spot left when Kale Clague was sent down from his emergency loan. Bryson has been in the minors since December 19th, appearing in nine games with the Rochester Americans and recording one assist. Bryson was on injured reserve earlier in the season with a lower-body injury.
This is the first time that Bryson has played AHL games since the 2020-21 season when he played in five games with Rochester and recorded three assists. In fact, Bryson has largely avoided the minor leagues since making his pro debut in 2019-20. He’s only totaled 75 AHL games, scoring 31 points, compared to his 173 career games in the NHL. Bryson’s most eventful NHL season came in 2021-22 when he netted a career-high 10 points in a career-high 73 games. He’s come close to breaking his scoring high a number of times, netting nine points in 38 games in his rookie 2020-21 season and nine points in 59 games last year. The Sabres originally drafted Bryson in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft, taking him in the same round that saw Michael Anderson, Emil Bemstrom, and Drake Batherson get selected.
Bryson rejoins a Sabres team that’s slowly finding their groove, setting a 4-2-0 record since the calendar turned over to 2024. He’ll serve as a depth option for Mattias Samuelsson, who is currently in concussion protocol and designated as day-to-day.
Jared Spurgeon To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery On Back And Hip
The Minnesota Wild have announced that team captain Jared Spurgeon is set to miss the remainder of the season after surgery on his back and hip. Spurgeon has been limited for much of the season, playing in just 16 games this year. He hasn’t played since January 2nd, though, as he’s continuing to struggle with lower-body injuries. This includes an injury suffered in the preseason that forced him to miss the month of October and parts of November.
It’s been a disastrous season for the 34-year-old pro, now in his 14th season with the Minnesota Wild. Spurgeon has managed just five points this year, but recorded an admirable 11 goals and 34 points in 79 games last season. Still, injuries have been consistent in his recent seasons, with the defender failing to appear in 70-or-more games in five of his last seven seasons, including this year.
Spurgeon has become a prolific NHLer despite the injuries. He has appeared in more games than any other defenseman in Wild history, with his 867 career games far ahead of second-place Ryan Suter‘s 656 games with the team. In fact, only one player has appeared in more games for the Wild – former long-term captain Mikko Koivu, who played all 1,028 games of his career in Minnesota. Spurgeon also ranks fourth in all-time scoring for the club, behind only Koivu, Marian Gaborik, and Zach Parise.
The 5’9″ Spurgeon has come a long way since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 NHL Draft – the same round that saw Cam Atkinson join the Columbus Blue Jackets. Together, the duo have paved a path for “undersized” players in the NHL, proving just how impactful they can be with the right energy and grit.
It’s safe to assume that Spurgeon’s absence will lead to more minutes for depth defensemen like Dakota Mermis and Daemon Hunt. The Wild will also now be relieved from Spurgeon’s $7.575MM cap hit for the remainder of the year. Whether their depth pieces, or potential acquisitions, will be able to fill in for the team’s top defenseman now becomes an important question to Minnesota’s success for the rest of the season. The Wild currently rank seventh in the Central Division with an 18-20-5 record.
Afternoon Notes: Ullmark, Sergachev, Fleury, Kochetkov
NHL.com reports that Boston Bruins netminder Linus Ullmark is set to return in a backup capacity when the Bruins take on the Colorado Avalanche this evening. Ullmark hasn’t played since a 4-3 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes on January 9 as he has been dealing with a lower-body injury. Ullmark will backup starter Jeremy Swayman who has been excellent in his absence. Swayman had a 31-save shutout on Monday over the New Jersey Devils and continues to put up terrific numbers. Ullmark on the other hand had cooled off in early December but was able to finish off 2023 strong capping off a historic year for the 30-year-old. No word yet on when Ullmark is expected to start again, but given that he is backing up Swayman this evening one would think it should be soon.

- Both Haydn Fleury and Mikhail Sergachev are likely to miss a few more weeks, as Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper shares that neither are expected back before the break for February 3rd’s All-Star Weekend. Both players are on long-term injured reserve, as Fleury deals with a hand injury and would be eligible to return as soon as January 25th, though he hasn’t recovered fully just yet, while Sergachev nurses a lower-body injury that’s already held him out of 11 games.
- Carolina Hurricanes fan-favorite Pyotr Kochetkov is getting better from his concussion, returning to team practices for one-on-one work with the team’s goalie coach, shares team reporter Walt Ruff. But despite the return to the ice, Ruff shares that there is still no timetable for Kochetkov’s return to the lineup. Kochetkov last played in January 11th’s matchup against the Anaheim Ducks, saving 10 of 13 shots before leaving the game early. Ducks goaltender John Gibson also left that game early with injury.
Calgary Flames Recall Adam Klapka, Place Dennis Gilbert On IR
The Calgary Flames have recalled winger Adam Klapka to the NHL and placed defenseman Dennis Gilbert on injured reserve, retroactive to January 4th.
This is the first recall of Klapka’s young career, with the 23-year-old signing with Calgary following the end of Liberec’s 2021-22 Czechia Extraliga season. That was Klapka’s first professional season after two years with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm. He performed admirably in Czechia’s top league, recording 18 points and 72 penalty minutes in 44 games.
The showing was enough to earn a contract in North America, with Klapka spending the last two seasons with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers. The winger has totaled 46 points in 96 minor league games and ranks fifth on the Wranglers in scoring this year with 21 points in 33 games
Klapka now joins the Flames roster in the absence of Gilbert, another young pro that, this season, has managed to carve out a role solely in the NHL for the first time in his career. The 27-year-old defender has appeared in 28 of Calgary’s 44 games this season, managing seven points and 16 penalty minutes. Gilbert was formerly drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks with the last pick of the third round in 2015, going just a handful of picks before players like Nicolas Roy and Mathieu Joseph.
Klapka is expected to serve as Calgary’s extra forward on Thursday, delaying what would be his NHL debut – something the young winger is certainly hoping for on this recall.
Evening Notes: Barkov, Fleury, Lindstrom
Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice shared that Aleksander Barkov had a lower-body injury that tightened up on him in the third period, leading to Maurice benching the top centerman for the rest of the game. The injury has been labeled as minor but it is expected to hold Barkov out of the team’s Wednesday night game as well.
Barkov is having yet another productive season, ranked second on the Panthers in scoring with 45 points in 39 games. He’s behind only Sam Reinhart, who has 31 goals and 54 points of his own. Barkov is in the second season of an eight-year contract that carries a $10MM cap hit. He’s played in all but three of Florida’s games up to this point.

- Legendary goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has officially moved into second on the all-time wins list, winning his 552nd game with a 5-0 shutout over the New York Islanders. Fleury is now sat behind just Martin Brodeur. Unfortunately, Fleury is still a long way off of Brodeur’s crown, needing 141 more wins to take the top spot.
- Top 2024 NHL Draft prospect Cayden Lindstrom is set to miss four-to-six weeks after undergoing surgery. He’s been placed on injured reserve for the Medicine Hat Tigers. Lindstrom is projected to be a top-10 pick by many, boasting 27 goals and 46 points in 32 WHL games, and was recently ranked third among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting Service’s midyear rankings.
Elvis Merzļikins Requests Trade Amid Diminishing Role
Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzļikins told the media after Monday’s game that he has requested a trade away from the team. Monday marks the first game that Merzļikins has played since December 29th – spending the last six games as either a backup or healthy scratch. He made 21 saves en route to a 4-3 shootout victory.
Merzļikins has become the third goaltender on Columbus’ depth chart, with Daniil Tarasov and Spencer Martin both receiving starts over Merzļikins. The Blue Jackets haven’t proven any more successful with the goalie changes, going 1-3-2 in the games Merzļikins sat out. It’s led Columbus to a dismal 13-21-9 start to the season, a record that ranks them 28th in the NHL.
This trade request could mark the end of what has been a heartwarming story for Merzļikins in Columbus. The 29-year-old became just the third Latvian goaltender to be drafted into the NHL when the Blue Jackets took him in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft – the same round that saw Warren Foegele, Ilya Sorokin, and Brayden Point be selected. Of the two Latvians to be selected before Merzļikins, only one had played significant NHL time: 568-game veteran Artūrs Irbe. Merzļikins, who has played in 173 games since his NHL debut in 2019-20, now ranks second in games played among Latvian netminders behind only Irbe – surpassing undrafted netminder Pēteris Skudra, the only other to play in more than 100 games.
Columbus has allowed more goals than any team other than the San Jose Sharks this season – but despite it, Merzļikins has still found a way to have a productive year, setting an 8-8-6 record and .906 save percentage through 24 games. He’s back to maintaining a save percentage over .900, a feat he managed in each of his first three seasons but lost with a .876 save percentage in 30 games last year. Merzļikins’ rebound back to form sets him up to be an attractive trade option for teams in need of goaltending help but without the assets to acquire a top name like John Gibson or Jacob Markstrom. But any recipient would need to have cap space, as Merzlikins carries a $5.4MM cap hit over the next four seasons, making him the 11th-most expensive goaltender in the league. There’s also the question of what Columbus would want in return for a goaltender who has become the fifth-most frequent in club history. Regardless, this move brings an exciting spark to the looming March 8th Trade Deadline.
Snapshots: Couturier, Drysdale, Red Wings, Nečas
The Philadelphia Flyers will be without Sean Couturier and Jamie Drysdale in their Monday night game against the St. Louis Blues, as they face an undisclosed injury and illness respectively. Both players also sat out of the team’s Saturday night win over the Winnipeg Jets. Bobby Brink and Marc Staal served as the duo’s replacements in Saturday’s 11-forward, seven-defensemen lineup, but the return of Noah Cates will push Staal out of Monday’s lineup.
Drysdale has only played two games with the Flyers since joining the team via trade with the Anaheim Ducks. He’s recorded an assist in both outings with Philadelphia, continuing what’s been a productive season for the third-year pro – with Drysdale boasting seven points in 12 games. The 21-year-old missed 29 games earlier in the season with a shoulder injury. The injury followed complicated contract negotiations with Anaheim, with Drysdale signing a new contract just nine days before the start of the season. He will now spend the three-year, $6.9MM deal with the Flyers.

- The Detroit Red Wings have signed a three-year extension with ECHL affiliate the Toledo Walleye. Toledo began their affiliation with Detroit in the 2009-10 season and have proven productive, only missing the postseason three times since. This includes championship appearances in two of the last three playoffs. Toledo most notably served as the first professional coaching role for current Detroit head coach Derek LaLonde, who coached the Walleye from 2014 to 2016.
- Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Nečas missed a fifth consecutive game on Monday as he’s recovering from an upper-body injury. He’s been replaced by Brendan Lemieux, who has yet to record a point since Nečas left the lineup. Nečas has 26 points of his own through 38 games.
