New York Rangers Reassign Matt Rempe

January 6, 2025 at 3:00 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 15 Comments

A corresponding transaction was necessary for the New York Rangers after claiming Arthur Kaliyev off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings earlier today. The Rangers have reassigned forward Matt Rempe to their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, to bring their active roster back down to the 23-man limit.

The young enforcer is seven games into an eight-game suspension and will need to miss one more should be recalled to the active roster at any point for the remaining season. Rempe has failed to find the scoresheet in five games for the Rangers this season but has accrued 24 PIMs overall.

Because his only role is becoming increasingly rarer in professional hockey, Rempe has failed to accrue much playing time throughout his brief NHL career. Since debuting with the Rangers last year, Rempe has scored one goal and one assist in 22 games averaging 5:46 of ice time per game.

He returns to a Wolf Pack lineup where he’s largely been tasked with the same role but has had more offensive production to lean on. Since joining Hartford for the 2022-23 AHL season, Rempe has scored 17 goals and 27 points in 114 contests but has also racked up an eye-popping 205 career PIMs.

The Wolf Pack are currently clinging to a playoff spot with a 15-14-2-1 record through the first 40 games and sit seventh in the league with 454 PIMs. Despite still facing a suspension in the NHL, Rempe is eligible to suit up in Hartford’s next game against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday.

You will all want Rempe in the playoffs if this team makes it. Especially if you face Washington in the 1st round…

Why? The guy has NO hockey skills except for punching people in the face. It’d be interesting to see how many goals the Rangers have LOST due to him being in the box. You win hockey games by putting pucks in the other guys’ net, not by how many blows you can deal to the head. You want a sport that works the other way around, go watch MMA.

Tom Wilson and Ovie will run anyone on the Rangers through the boards that’s why you need alittle toughness on the wimpy Rangers.

Especially when management traded the #4 Trouba train like they did. The only real tough guy on that team day in day out.
Was Igor Shesterkin really worth it? They had him last year and all they got was bounced. The puck stops with your goalie and he didn’t do much after the season wrapped up and they went into the playoffs.

And you know what would help with that? Tough HOCKEY PLAYERS. Rempe being on the ice for five minutes, where he runs at some people and misses, punches someone in a head so that the Rangers lose another goal on the subsequent penalty kill, that ain’t it.

“also racked up an eye-popping 205 career PIMs.”

Joe Kocur would call that a weekend.

Rempe screwed himself. He took too many non fighting penalties He ran a few players on the Devils. That cost them a game or two in the long run He had a role on this team but I think he went overboard with his stardom. I have no dogs in this fight (Pens fan) but as an outsider who loves hockey (just not Rangers hockey lol) He let the success go to his head. But in reality what young hungry player wouldn’t? I’m sure he was getting ladies at the club and enjoying the fruits of his fists Labor. I’m pulling for Rempe and I hope he gets some fundamentals in when he is down in the minors.

Rempe is a Piece of Garbage!! All he does is play Dirty hockey and try to hurt people!! He has no Hockey Skills at all!! He shouldn’t be allowed to play in the NHL! I’m really Disappointed that he won’t be playing Thursday night against the Devils! Because McDermott would Beat Rempe’s Ass in a fight Again! Just like he did last year! For a guy his Size, Rempe is the Biggest Wuss that i have ever seen on the Ice!!! Lol.
    Let’s Go Devils!!!

That the same MacDermid who drew a first period penalty, which resulted in a Rangers power play goal, and cost his team the game?

Bet the average Rangers fan was real glad he was playing, alright!
