Maple Leafs Acquire Connor Dewar

March 8, 2024 at 2:20 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 18 Comments

The Maple Leafs have acquired depth forward Connor Dewar from the Wild, Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic reports. The Wild are receiving a 2026 fourth-round pick in return, per Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. Forward prospect Dmitry Ovchinnikov is also headed to Minnesota in the deal, per an official announcement from the Wild.

Dewar has settled into a comfortable fourth-line role since making his debut in the 2021-22 season, finding an extra layer to his game this year with a career-high 10 goals, though he’s still four points shy of the 18 points he managed in 81 games last season. Last year marked the first time that Dewar spent all season in the NHL, a trend he’s continuing this year, after scoring 59 points in 105 AHL games between 2019 and 2022. Dewar was a third-round draft pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, playing in the sixth-most NHL games of any player selected after that year’s first round. While his impact isn’t too grandiose, Dewar has shown flashes of strong puckhandling and good fundamentals, helping him fit into the needs of whatever the coach’s system may be.

Minnesota swaps a depth forward for a depth prospect, bringing in Ovchinikov, who is in his first full season in the AHL after splitting the last two years between the AHL and KHL. He’s scored seven goals and 10 points in 20 games this season, adding four penatly minutes and a -1. It’s the second-most that Ovchinikov has scored at a professional level, behind the five goals and 13 points he managed in 68 KHL games last season. Ovchinikov is a slick-moving forward with good puck skills, though his game has lacked direction and poise. He will need to boost his drive to the net, and ability to work with his teammates, if he wants to climb his way up Minnesota’s depth charts.

The woe is me, I’m going to be self-loathing and salty act gets really old from Minnesota sports fans. Get over it. Your teams are a constant let down, we get it.

You gotta be joking right this is what the leafs added? Dewar, Edmundson and lyubushkin lmao this is the most ridiculous franchise seriously. Really hope Treliving isn’t comfy in that gm seat cause leafs fans already fed up with this clown, not that upper management cares in the slightest what us fans think.

“The Fans” wanted to keep Nylander, and Reilly, and Matthews, and Tavares… And now you have a salary cap crisis to keep all your stars well-paid. Toronto fans will never be happy, it’s always perpetual misery with you guys. Doesn’t matter what the team does, you guys are gonna throw a tantrum. What did you expect them to do? Get McDavid and Tkachuk and Peak Gretzky?

I’m in London, I get Toronto and Detroit stations. And you know what? Wings fans have always been a total class act. The media around the team is always pretty reasonable. The whole Leafs “ecosystem” is an embarrassment to the sport of hockey.

I expected them to do something, and don’t tell me who I wanted to keep, idgaf what other fans want u talking to me, I didn’t wanna keep Nylander, I didn’t wanna sign Tavares either so what are you talking about? But any team in the position they are in right now amd made the additions they made is a joke. Expect the players u mentioned what are talking about. Maybe a simple right handed defenseman would have been a start.

But to flip the script on you leaf haters, all you guys do is complain about toronto and the fan base, if you hate it so much why do click on the links? Why do you leave comments? Go read up on the teams you watch, save your leaf hatred for someone else there bro you got the wrong one. Also idc what wings fans do so why would that matter to me in the slightest?

Only thing you right on is yes we are in perpetual misery, we have a original 6 team,.one of the most profitable in the NHL, and management doesn’t care in the least if they win or not, so yeah we are miserable and vocal about it should we not be angry? We haven’t won anything since 67. We’ve barely come close, so yeah we pretty frustrated, but we also one of the most passionate, there’s more passion in leafs fans then 20 other teams in the league

Son, I would love to see the Leafs win a Cup. But you know what I want more? A team in Hamilton or Mississauga or something. Which the Leafs keep blocking. So I can either pay to see my teams for $600 a seat in Toronto, or $80 in Buffalo. Team desperately needs that monopoly shattered.

I wouldn’t sleep on PWHL, they play at Maple Leaf Gardens. I keep meaning to catch games, but they’re on like TSN4 or some crap, I don’t have cable, and my spicy hockey streaming sites don’t usually carry them. What I have seen from clips and catching pieces of games at restaurants and stuff though, that’s some seriously good hockey.

I have been watching those games myself I get those channels I still have cable. It’s competitive hockey and a good watch, I am gonna make it out to one of the games when I get a chance. Toronto started off slow but has been playing really well lately. Youtube has a good selection also of highlights from each game condensed into a 15 minute clip

As much as I hate to say it but this is another one and done season. Boston game last night was a playoff atmosphere and the big 3 did squat. Need to move two of them and use the money to get 4 $5 mill players. I love Rielly even though he’s not the greatest defensively. He needs a legit stay home dman with him but he puts up points. Most offensive dmen aren’t “great” in their zone and he not makes $7.5. I’d even trade Matthews if I could get McTavish, 2 1sts, and Carlsson. Sign Lindholm and Stephenson for the c positions. Sign Zadorov, DeMelo and trade for Larsson. Need a number 1 goalie too.

Ok so they need a lot…..
