Chicago Blackhawks Issue Medical Update On Jonathan Toews

December 29, 2020 at 11:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 12 Comments

The Chicago Blackhawks have issued an update on the status of Jonathan Toews, who will not be participating in the upcoming training camp. Toews himself explains that this offseason he has felt “drained and lethargic” and does not have a timetable for his return. Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman released this statement:

Jonathan’s health is our top priority as he deals with this medical issue. The Chicago Blackhawks organization and our medical staff will provide all necessary resources to help him return to playing hockey. While he will not report to training camp on January 3 and will be out indefinitely, we will continue to support him as he is an important part of our family. I’ve been in regular communication with Jonathan recently and will continue that as he takes care of his health.

It is not clear at all what is happening to Toews, but the team will issue further updates as they learn about his condition.

This is the third forward the team has lost in the last few weeks, following major surgeries to Kirby Dach and Alexander Nylander that will likely keep them out the entire season. Hopefully, Toews, the team captain and face of the franchise, will be able to return before long. He is asking for privacy as he focuses on his health and recovery.

Looks like the tanking for the #1 pick is in full effect now for the Blackhawks. Hopefully Bowman is given his pink slip before he gets to choose whoever it is at #1

are you implying this is all just part of a plan to win a high draft pick?

@MoneyBallJustWorks – I’m seeing hockey karma biting Stan in the butt, more than anything. This has all the makings of a Detroit ’19-’20 year for the ‘Hawks in ’21-’21. And, @windycitykid89, you probably know, as well, that the only way Stan gets the boot is if they stomp his stubby fingers off the ledge… ;)

I’d say both yes and no. To be honest, they’ve already committed to a rebuild. They said they were going to focus on their young players development. They weren’t spending money on FAs, and they’ve already lost both Nylander and Dach for the upcoming year. Now this news with Toews comes out. The Hawks were already going to be bad this year, and losing those 3 played will make them likely to end up in a Top 5 pick situation.

Bad timing on giving Stan Bowman that recent promotion to President of Operations I guess . If Toews is out for the year, the Blackhawks are missing the playoffs “again” this year. Hopefully the Wirtz family will finally see that Stan Bowman is not for person for the job and fires him after this season.

Are you blaming Bowmen for Toews medical condition playing? I’m genuinely asking because the Bowmen comments seem completely out of left field here.

*I forgot to take out “playing” in the end of the rust sentence. My bad.

Some really stupid, ignorant comments on this page. Get well Jonathon, and praying it’s not serious.

This sounds like a very fishy personal leave of absence. Very vague symptoms. I wouldn’t rule out a substance abuse issue. Regardless, get well Captain Canada.
