Bill Peters Hired In KHL

April 15, 2020 at 10:15 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 13 Comments

After Bill Peters’ resignation was accepted by the Calgary Flames, following their investigation into racial slurs he used in the past against former player Akim Aliu, it was hard to see a way for him to return to coaching in the NHL. That doesn’t mean Peters’ career behind the bench is over however, as he has been hired by Avtomobilist in the KHL.

The team announced a two-year deal for the former head coach of the Flames and Carolina Hurricanes, who has also led Team Canada at the World Championship. The incident with Aliu took place when Peters was head coach of the Rockford IceHogs in the 2009-10 season.

In six seasons as an NHL head coach, Peters had a 199-175-64 record and made the playoffs only once.

    No offence to Avtomobilist and KHL fans but I hope their team #3 to fold. Why haven’t you guys covered that yet, covid has done some serious damage to the KHL

    Guy deserves another chance…cmon said some awful things ten years ago give it a rest already. I don’t promote racism I want to make that clear. But to my and most anyone’s knowledge he hasn’t made another comment to that degree since. Maybe he learned his lesson. Akim Aliu is stirring up trouble because Akim Aliu couldn’t stir himself into an NHL lineup.

      100% agree. Yeah Bill shouldn’t have said what he said, he messed up, but Akim is a bitch for ruining someone’s career simply cause Akim couldn’t make a career for himself

      @dangercat – Very true about Aliu. Seems he garnered himself a reputation for being a bit of an instigator. Peters definitely has to prove he has “reformed” and “come back into the light”, so to speak. I won’t say I’m on the sidelines “rooting” for him, as much as standing there, arms crossed, watching for a misstep. Kinda like the drunkaholic that says they are “all good”, but have to prove it to their inner circle, first.

      @andrewgauldin – Agreed with you 100%.

      You know he didn’t just say the racist comment there was more to the firing than just that. And just because Akim is a idiot doesn’t allow Bill to say or do whatever he wants.

      @bigdaddyt – That’s true, Peters was proven, more or less, to have also been physically abusive. That’s why I said I was on the sidelines with arms crossed, not in the “rooters pose.” He has a long way to go to get back in my good graces, but he should at least get the opportunity. If he ends up proving he can’t change his ways, then off to Botany Bay with him. I advocate a fairly short leash, but not no leash. I did like listening to his post game scrums on SN960, but that never revealed the real Bill Peters. He now has to become a “New & Improved” Bill Peters, otherwise it’ll be banishment, for sure.

      I miss Burke being president of the flames. Whenever he was on 960 it was an instant classic

    @bigdaddyt – You do know Burkie is on SN590 on Hockey Central and makes weekly appearances (usually) every Thursday afternoon on Oilers Now (630 CHED). He’s talked about other radio hits, but I haven’t been able to track them down, yet.

    Of course he was. Hockey (no matter where) is about as forward thinking as Donald Trump. Once you are in the club, you are in the club! Better than having to go and get a real job!

    Will have to skip the political bashing don’t wish to get censored on that subject of a few choice adjectives , well if Peters does stick his foot in his mouth otherwise called hoof and mouth disease they can exile him up the road to Siberia , but remember seeing KHL Standings of recent searches notices they have a few KHL teams in Siberia, oh! well carry on maybe he can do good over there and get some respect back for some nasty recent turn of events. Thou ever doubt he will return to bench in NHL. or will be in crapper

    Mac I seen few listings on his wikipedia page hope that helps for Mr. Burke as have seen him as mentioned on Hockey Central. Stay safe everyone.or
