The Lightning basically traded three 1st round picks for Barclay Goodrow and Blake Coleman. Yikes.
@amk3510 – The only consolation there is Tampa’s picks should be in the bottom 8-10 of the first rounds, thanks to being higher up in the standings, year after year. I agree, though, bit of a high price for depth guys that aren’t likely (but not impossible, either) to be impact players.
Considering their window is right now, it does make some sense. Goodrow and Coleman are more likely to help the Lightning right now than a late 1st round pick. Could be wrong but I think the Lightning are pretty cap strapped so it wouldn’t have been easy to use those 1st rounders for guys with higher cap hits, rental or not.
While I do think they probably gave up a touch too much, I think we will start seeing teams employ a similar trade strategy. Move a late 1st or 2nd rounder for a depth guy with term as part of the playoff push. Guys like Coleman and Goodrow are likely upgrades on the Lightning’s bottom six and with their extra year of control, there’s little worry about having to replace them in the offseason. Of course the Lightning are in a somewhat fortunate position of having a good top six, a solid group of defensemen, and a good goalie so they probably can afford to take these types of risks as opposed to going all in on a rental.

Do the Leafs own Edmontons 7th in 2020?
**The Edmonton Oilers have acquired Nolan Vesey from the Toronto Maple Leafs and have signed the forward to a two-year entry-level contract. The Maple Leafs received Edmonton’s conditional seventh-round pick in 2020 in exchange.
According to CapFriendly, that conditional pick was not transferred as Vesey did not play the required amount of NHL games.
