Atlantic Notes: Dzingel, Rask, Red Wings

January 29, 2019 at 6:55 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 12 Comments

With Ottawa’s focus right now being on trying to lock up center Matt Duchene and winger Mark Stone to long-term contract extensions, many have expected the team to deal away winger Ryan Dzingel.  However, in an appearance on TSN 1200 (audio link), TSN’s Darren Dreger indicated that there’s as good of a chance that the Senators try to extend him over trading him.

The 26-year-old is having a career year and has already reached the 20-goal mark in just 48 games.  While that’s going to have him in line for a significant raise on his current $1.8MM cap hit, he’s also not going to come close to what Stone and Duchene ultimately get.  The Senators will need to keep some notable players around through their rebuild no matter what and given the success he’s had over the last couple of seasons, it would certainly be understandable that they’d try to make a run at re-signing him over the next few weeks depending on how things play out with their other pending free agents.

More from the Atlantic:

  • Although the Bruins just placed goaltender Tuukka Rask on injured reserve on Monday, he may not be there for much longer. Head coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters, including NBC Sports Boston’s Joe Haggerty, that there’s a chance that Rask will be activated in time for their game on Thursday.  Rask’s placement was backdated to January 19th, meaning that he has already technically spent the requisite seven days on IR which means he can be activated at any time.
  • While their placement near the bottom of the league would suggest that Red Wings should be sellers, GM Ken Holland told Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News that he’d like to see the team in a position to make a run for the playoffs next season. Accordingly, their preference at this time appears to be signing their pending unrestricted free agents (headlined by goalie Jimmy Howard and winger Gustav Nyquist) over trading them at this time.  Kulfan notes that a short-term extension for Howard remains likely while the supply of prominent wingers may make it difficult for Detroit to get top value for Nyquist which could push them towards trying to work out an extension.

Ken Holland needs to be fired! Trade Nyquist and Howard for as many picks as you can. Quit handing out extensions to aging players that will never hoist a cup in Detroit again.

Kenny was a great GM when the NHL had no salary cap. The Wings of hockey were the Yanks of baseball. Holland never adjusted to the cap. Time for the Wings to hire Stevie Y.

    Dumbest comment why?

Kinda trash meaning he’s full trash

    Or

Holland’s work up until 2009 means he gets a free pass to suck for a decade?

It seems like the Red Wings have been “rebuilding on the fly” for a while now. They really need to move on and usher in the next era of Detroit hockey. The franchise is in a strange state, with Mr. I’s passing and the new arena I think they’re grasping at straws trying to get back into the playoffs. Speaking as an outsider and fan of hockey, I hope they cut the bait and transform themselves into a formidable opponent sooner rather than later. It already seems like they have some very interesting prospects and young players to build around.

Hopefully, Holland is putting out a smoke screen, pretending that he is not concerned about trading in order to get better draft picks, after all,Holland can’t be that dumb, can he?

Stevie is coming unless everyone has read this incredibly wrong. The drafting & trades have been fine. It’s those horrible contracts that he keeps doing that irritates me to no end!

The wings have a chance to be very good in a couple years…But holland has not drafted well..has done horrid contracts..and still will not do a total tank of this team..somethingb that should have been done 4 years ago….The LCA is half filled…The franchise is joke now and Chris Illitch has no interest to turn things around because he doesnt care…He cares only about the bottom lone….Which is why the tigers along with the wings may be pathetic for a very long time….I hope for a new GM for the wings soon…and new ownership for the tigers soon…..A very hard time to be a Detroit sports fan as all ownership of wings lions tigers pistons are a joke…another thought drop the ticket prices and stop charging $45.00 to park a car…… and put a product of the ice that people can care about…in the meantime Chris keep counting your billions that your father created for you…….Fire Holland and sell the tigers….so you can give the fans some hope…….

You’re assuming that someone will give up a 1st and 2nd round pick for them. I think that’s wishful thinking.
