Colorado Avalanche Re-Sign Jayson Megna
The Colorado Avalanche will bring back Jayson Megna next season and the one after that. The pending free agent forward has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him in the Avalanche organization through the 2022-23 campaign. The financial details have not yet been released, but in all likelihood, the deal will be a two-way contract worth the league minimum of $750K at the NHL level.
Megna, 31, certainly seems to be okay with that kind of a deal, given he has never had a contract worth more in the NHL than his entry-level paid. He has gone almost year-to-year throughout his career, signing one-year deals with the Penguins, Rangers, Canucks, Capitals and Avalanche. The security of a two-year contract must seem like a huge win for the minor league veteran, who continues to provide depth for the Colorado organization.
In 2020-21, he played nearly as many games with the Avalanche as he did with the Colorado Eagles, suiting up seven times in the NHL. He registered two points during those games, but managed another seven goals and nine points in 13 minor league contests.
Despite being eligible for the expansion draft, he has not played quite enough games to fill the Avalanche forward requirements, meaning this two-year deal is more about his place in the organization than any other expansion manipulation. He’ll need to clear waivers next season to go to the Eagles, but that shouldn’t be much of an obstacle.

After a long stretch with one player from each team in the ongoing West Division Finals being sidelined on the CPRA list, it’s now down to just one. The wait continues for McNabb to return to the Golden Knights, but Megna is now available to the Avalanche. The veteran forward only played in seven NHL games this year and had not seen any postseason action before he landed on the CPRA list, so this is not the same level of impact as if McNabb, a regular defenseman for Vegas, was able to return. The countdown is now on for the league to get back to an empty list.

Still no McNabb for the Golden Knights, who will try to climb back into their second-round series against the Avalanche tonight. Vegas could be on the brink of elimination before the veteran defenseman returns, and given how long he’s been out it’s hard to imagine him making a difference anytime soon.

Another day and no changes for the Avalanche and Golden Knights, who are still without Megna and McNabb. The Golden Knights are headed home down 2-0 in the series after Mikko Rantanen‘s overtime winner and still don’t have McNabb available to them. The two teams face off tomorrow, so technically there is still time for him to come off the list and participate, but after being shelved for ten days it seems unlikely he would be ready to step back into the lineup against the speedy Colorado unit.

We’re now just a day away from the Golden Knights being without McNabb for game two against the Avalanche, as today’s list had no changes. Vegas was run out of the building in game one and could use the veteran defenseman to help slow down the Colorado attack. McNabb last played on May 24 however, so could actually need some time to get back to speed once he is removed from the protocol.

No changes to the list except that the Minnesota Wild are no longer included after losing last night’s game seven. Ryan Reaves was removed from the protocol yesterday and suited up for the Golden Knights, giving them back their physical bottom-six presence. McNabb, who provides the same sort of physicality for the defensive group, has now been on the list for four days and is still unavailable to the team.

It’s terrible news for the Golden Knights who now have to try and play game seven against the Wild tomorrow night shorthanded. Three players are currently unavailable, though Reaves already missed the last game due to injury. Krebs, who played four games for the team earlier this season, hasn’t yet made his NHL playoff debut and doesn’t look like he’ll be able to tomorrow night unless his name comes off quickly.
The Avalanche confirmed that Megna tested positive for coronavirus, meaning he won’t be back anytime soon. Colorado will get its second-round series started on Sunday against whoever wins the Vegas-Minnesota game.

After two days without a single name on the list, the NHL wasn’t so lucky today. Megna and McNabb have been added and will have to sit out for their respective teams. McNabb’s exclusion is obviously more important given the Golden Knights game this evening against the Wild. He played just over 13 minutes on Monday night but will have to be replaced for tonight’s game.
