Kraken Re-Assign Eduard Sale To AHL

April 26, 2024 at 6:42 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

In recent days, Seattle has been signing some of their junior prospects and then assigning them to the AHL to keep their seasons going.  When it comes to Eduard Sale, he was already under contract but he will also continue his 2023-24 campaign as the Kraken have re-assigned him to AHL Coachella Valley, per the AHL’s transactions log.

The 19-year-old was a first-round pick by the Kraken last year, going 20th overall.  He was rated considerably higher than that heading into the season but a quiet season with HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Extraliga hurt his stock despite good showings playing against his own age group in the World Juniors and World Under-18s.

This season, Sale decided to try his hand in North America, coming to the OHL where Barrie held his rights.  He was a bit quieter than expected offensively, collecting 20 points in 25 games with them before being moved to Kitchener at the trade deadline where his output dipped a bit more to 18 points in 24 contests.  In between, he did well again at the World Juniors, averaging a point per game.  Sale finished up his junior campaign on a high note, notching 12 points in 10 games before Kitchener was swept in the second round.

Now, Sale will join the Firebirds for his first taste of North American professional hockey.  Having been drafted out of his native Czechia, he’s not subject to the usual NHL/CHL transfer restrictions.  Accordingly, Sale will be eligible to play in the minors full-time next season if Seattle decides they want to test him at a higher level so a good showing in the coming weeks could certainly make a difference in their plans for him.

CHL Trade Roundup: Sale, Toure, Sobolev, Thornton

January 9, 2024 at 7:27 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The CHL Trade Deadline is set to hit on Wednesday and there have been several big moves made already that have involved NHL prospects.  Several more have happened today; here’s a rundown of those moves.

  • Kraken prospect Eduard Sale has been acquired by OHL Kitchener along with blueliner Olivier Savard in exchange for forward Kyle Morey, defenseman Blair Scott, and eight draft picks, reports Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek (Twitter link). Sale was the 23rd pick back in June and is in his first season in North America where he has struggled a bit, notching just 20 points in 25 games with the Colts.  He was more of a factor for Czechia at the World Juniors, picking up seven points in as many contests.
  • A Senators blueliner is on the move as Windsor picked up Djibril Toure from Sudbury for a pair of draft picks. The 20-year-old signed with Ottawa as an undrafted free agent back in September.  Toure, who stands 6’7, has been a shutdown defenseman at the OHL level but still has 12 points in 24 appearances this season.
  • While Brantford was selling with yesterday’s Jorian Donovan trade, they also added to their roster, acquiring Canadiens blueline prospect Danill Sobolev for forward Masen Wray and defenseman Callum Cheynowski. Sobolev was a fifth-round pick by Montreal in 2021 (142nd overall) and has been a shutdown defender in his three junior seasons.  He’ll be too old for junior hockey next season and it remains to be seen if Montreal will look to find a place for him in their system.
  • Coyotes goaltender Anson Thornton’s junior rights have been moved from OHL Barrie to Niagara for a conditional draft choice. The 20-year-old signed as an undrafted free agent with Arizona 2021 but has missed most of the year with an injury, being limited to just four appearances with AHL Tucson where he has a save percentage of just .849.

Kraken Prospect Eduard Sale Officially Commits To OHL

September 2, 2023 at 9:25 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Dating back to last season, it was expected that winger Eduard Sale would play with OHL Barrie for the 2023-24 campaign.  That is now confirmed to be the case as the Colts announced that the Kraken first-rounder has officially committed to the team.

The 18-year-old was the 20th overall selection back in June after a season that didn’t help his draft stock.  Sale entered the year as a potential top-ten pick with some early rankings having him closer to the top five.  He spent last season playing in the Czech Extraliga playing against pros and not surprisingly, his offensive numbers didn’t exactly stand out as he notched just seven goals and seven assists in 43 games.

However, against his own age level, Sale fared much better.  He had six points in seven games at the World Juniors and then followed that up with six more in five contests at the World Under-18s in May, the final tournament before the draft.

Seattle has already signed Sale to his entry-level deal but assuming he doesn’t play in ten or more NHL games this coming season, his contract will slide a year.  As a result, it will still have three years remaining heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

Seattle Kraken Sign Eduard Sale

July 16, 2023 at 5:55 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

07/16/23: The Kraken have now officially announced their signing of Sale, confirming the $950k AAV that was reported earlier.

07/15/23: The Seattle Kraken are reportedly close to signing their first-round pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, Eduard Sale, to a three-year entry-level contract. The contract will reportedly have an AAV of $950K each season, and pay Sale a base salary of $855K (Tweet Link).

At the time of the 2022 NHL Draft, Sale had already made some noise as a potential top-10 selection this year. During that year, Sale primarily played with HC Kometa Brno of the Czechia U20 league, and flat-out dominated, scoring 42 goals and 47 assists in only 39 games.

This past season, finally moving up to the professional leagues for HC Kometa Brno, Sale could only manage seven goals and seven assists in 43 games. Although the transition to professional hockey did not go as smoothly as desired for Sale, he still played well in international tournaments for Czechia, scoring 11 goals and eight assists in 18 games played for their U18 team, as well as three goals and seven assists in 11 games for their U20 team.

Sale is primarily an offensive talent at this point, still needing a bit of development on the defensive side of the puck. Next season, Sale is set to join the Barrie Colts of the OHL. The Colts originally drafted Sale with the 29th overall selection at the OHL’s Import Draft last summer.
