Lightning Hire Dan Hinote As Assistant Coach

June 6, 2025 at 10:08 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Lightning have hired former NHL forward Dan Hinote as an assistant coach, the team announced today. He fills the vacancy created last month when Jeff Blashill departed head coach Jon Cooper’s staff to accept the Blackhawks’ head coach opening.

Hinote, 48, joins Tampa with a lengthy coaching resume that began as soon as his playing career ended in 2010. After playing his final pro campaign with Sweden’s MODO Hockey, he came back stateside and accepted a role on the Blue Jackets’ bench. He remained in the organization until 2018, although he transitioned away from coaching and into a pro scouting role for the 2014-15 season.

The Florida native returned to coaching after leaving Columbus. He spent two seasons as an associate coach for the United States National Development Team Program before returning to the NHL as an assistant coach with the Predators for the 2020-21 season. He remained in that role up through last year, when he departed to accept the role of associate head coach for the Avalanche’s AHL affiliate.

Assuming Hinote directly replaces Blashill’s responsibilities, he’ll take over the team’s penalty kill and work closely with assistant Rob Zettler on managing the club’s defense. Hinote was a frequent penalty killer himself during his 503-game NHL career, averaging 1:50 per game while shorthanded across six years with the Avalanche and three with the Blues.

He’ll now work to maintain a Lightning PK unit that was excellent under Blashill over the last three seasons. Tampa’s 81.5% success rate shorthanded was sixth in the league from 2022-23 to 2024-25.

Colorado Eagles Hire Dan Hinote As Associate Coach

July 17, 2024 at 12:30 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

After Steve Konowalchuk left this summer to become the next head coach of the Springfield Thunderbirds, the AHL’s Colorado Eagles had a position to fill as associate coach. The team has found their man from the NHL ranks as the team announced they have hired Dan Hinote.

Hinote is a veteran of nine years in the NHL from 1999 to 2009 with six of those years coming with the Colorado Avalanche. The former player was a reliable bottom-six player for the Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues throughout his career and helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup in 2001. Hinote played one year for MODO Hockey in the Elitserien before becoming an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 2010-11 NHL season.

The Blue Jackets struggled mightily during Hinote’s tenure as an assistant coach as the team finished outside the playoff picture in their last days of residing in the Western Conference. Columbus qualified for the postseason in Hinote’s last year on the bench but was quickly eliminated in the first round by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hinote was transitioned to a professional scout with the Blue Jackets organization until the 2018-19 season.

Over the next two years, Hinote worked with the US National Team Development Program in Plymouth, MI as an associate coach and also worked with the Team USA U18 in the 2019 World Junior Championship and the Team USA U17 in the 2020 World Junior Championship. After a successful run in the USHL and on the international stage, the Nashville Predators hired Hinote as an assistant coach ahead of the 2020-21 NHL campaign.

Hinote was in charge of a Predators’ penalty kill that had fallen towards the league basement as they finished 29th place in the NHL with a 75.58% success rate. Nashville climbed to 18th in the 2021-22 season, sixth in the 2022-23 season, before falling back to 22nd this past year. Hinote will have much more responsibility as an associate coach with the Eagles and returns to the Avalanche organization after nearly two decades away.

Predators To Part Ways With Assistant Coach Dan Hinote

May 31, 2024 at 7:15 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

The Predators have elected to make a change behind the bench for next season.  The team confirmed to Alex Daugherty of The Tennessean that they will not renew the contract of assistant coach Dan Hinote when it expires at the end of June.

Hinote was an energetic winger over his nine-year NHL career split between Colorado and St. Louis.  He opted to play in Sweden for one final season in 2009-10 before hanging up his skates.

However, Hinote wasn’t out of a job for long as after retiring, he was named an assistant coach with Columbus.  The 47-year-old spent four seasons in that role before moving into scouting where he spent four more years with the Blue Jackets.  From there, he spent two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program before former Nashville GM David Poile brought Hinote onto their staff back in 2020.  After four years in that job, Hinote will now be on the lookout for another job.

While Hinote won’t be returning, their other assistants will.  Daugherty added that Nashville’s two other assistant coaches, Tom Richards and Derek MacKenzie, are expected to return next season so there will only be one new voice behind the bench on Andrew Brunette’s staff.
