Kevin Hayes Out Week-To-Week
After just two games, Kevin Hayes is back on the shelf for the Philadelphia Flyers. The big forward is out on a week-to-week basis after suffering a re-injury against the Calgary Flames. He scored his lone goal of the season in that game, an emotional moment for the forward that has had an incredibly difficult few months.
Hayes had two abdominal surgeries this offseason, first in June and then again in September. That kept him on long-term injured reserve to start the year, but he was activated on November 13 to play against the Dallas Stars. In both of his two appearances, he didn’t even play 15 minutes of ice time as the team eased him back into the lineup, but that strategy appeared to have failed. Hayes will now exit a Flyers lineup that can’t seem to get healthy.
He’ll now stay in Tampa to get treatment for a few days, according to head coach Alain Vigneault, but it’s not clear when Hayes will be back for the Flyers. The team is already dealing with a similar issue for Ryan Ellis, who has suffered setbacks in his own injury troubles this season. Philadelphia has lost two in a row and now sits at 8-5-3 on the year as they try to hang onto the Metropolitan Division playoff race. The top three teams are beginning to pull away, with the New York Rangers now six points ahead of the Flyers for third.
Snapshots: Three Stars, Fiala, Brooks
The NHL has released their Three Stars for last week, headlined by Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau who takes home the top spot. Gaudreau put up four goals and seven points in four games last week, including two game-winning tallies. After a strong bounce-back campaign in 2020-21, the diminutive forward has upped his game once again and now has 22 points in 19 contests this season.
Second and third go to Ilya Samsonov and Cale Makar respectively, with each young player putting up a pair of outstanding performances. Samsonov didn’t allow a single goal in his two starts for the Washington Capitals, posting a pair of shutouts and raising his save percentage to .924 on the season. Makar meanwhile had five points in two games for the Colorado Avalanche, something that has become relatively routine for the young defenseman. Through 113 career games, Makar now has 107 points.
- When Kevin Fiala and the Minnesota Wild settled on a one-year contract just a day ahead of his arbitration hearing this offseason, it raised some questions about his long-term future with the team. Other key forwards like Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek were being locked up well into the future, while the 25-year-old Fiala was now scheduled to be a free agent once again in 2022 after this $5.1MM contract expired. That’s when the Wild have some huge buyout penalties hitting the cap, making it challenging to go through the uncertainty of an arbitration process again with a player like Fiala. Yesterday, Michael Russo of The Athletic wrote about Fiala’s future with the team, suggesting it is “hard to see Fiala being long for this organization.” Today, Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discuss it on Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts podcast, and note that though there is some smoke, Wild GM Bill Guerin has never been one into a decision.
- It’s been several days since Adam Brooks was claimed off waivers by the Vegas Golden Knights, but he had not yet made his debut for the club due to some immigration issues that needed to be resolved. Resolved they’ve now been, and Brooks will be in the lineup for the Golden Knights this evening, head coach Pete DeBoer told reporters including David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Max Pacioretty, who is nearing a return, is on the trip but not yet quite ready to play tonight.
Riley Stillman Placed On Injured Reserve
The Chicago Blackhawks have placed Riley Stillman on injured reserve while recalling Wyatt Kalynuk to take his place on the roster. Stillman suffered a left knee injury in last night’s game when Tyler Motte was pushed into his leg from behind. The team has not indicated how long he’ll be out for, but a stint on IR means at least a week.
Stillman, 23, is another one of the players in their first full season with the Blackhawks, after being acquired at last season’s deadline along with Brett Connolly and Henrik Borgstrom. The young defenseman had played in 12 games and was averaging more than 15 minutes a night before going down early last night. Unfortunately, even those limited minutes had led to pretty poor results to this point, with the Blackhawks outscored 6-2 with Stillman on the ice at even-strength.
Kalynuk meanwhile had been dealing with a injury of his own, starting the year on LTIR and only joining the Rockford Icehogs earlier this month. He has played in four games and has three points, continuing his history of production at the professional level. Since leaving the University of Wisconsin and signing with Chicago, Kalynuk has played 33 games combined between the AHL and NHL. He has 22 points in those contests, including seven goals. With the loss of Stillman, he could get an opportunity immediately to get back into the Blackhawks lineup and continue his strong early play.
Ryan Hartman Avoids Suspension, Earns Fine
The Department of Player Safety has decided that Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman‘s slew foot on Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ross Colton did not rise to the level of a suspension, issuing a $4,250 fine instead. The fine is the maximum allowable under the CBA, based on Hartman’s current salary.
The incident, which occurred late in the first period on Sunday night and resulted in a tripping penalty for Hartman. He then received an additional five-minute major for fighting when Zach Bogosian engaged him almost immediately after he exited the penalty box. Colton avoided a serious injury on the play and ended up seeing nearly 16 minutes of ice time in the game.
Slew-footing has become something of a trend in the NHL this season, with several different players earning fines or suspensions for incidents similar to the one that happened in Tampa Bay. Just last week, Kevin Labanc received a one-game suspension for nearly the same thing, with the league including the explanation that “what causes this play to rise to the level of supplemental discipline is the speed the players are traveling and their proximity to the boards.” Perhaps in the Hartman case, they did not feel it included those same factors.
AHL Shuffle: 11/22/21
Six games are on the schedule for this evening, including the return of the Ottawa Senators after being shut down the last week with a COVID outbreak. The team has traveled to Colorado to take on the Avalanche but will be basically in a bubble according to Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia. Ottawa was the first team to have games postponed after seeing ten players enter the COVID protocol. As they and others prepare for tonight’s action, we’ll keep track of all the minor shuffling right here.

- The Vancouver Canucks have assigned Travis Hamonic to the AHL once again, as they prepare to go on a road trip through the U.S. Hamonic’s does not yet qualify as fully vaccinated, though he will be soon after recently receiving his second shot. Still, with quarantine rules how they are, he’ll most likely miss the next three games and join the team in Montreal when they face the Canadiens on November 29.
- The San Jose Sharks have recalled Scott Reedy from the AHL, after his blistering start with the Barracuda. The 22-year-old forward has eight goals and 12 points in 12 games in what is his first full professional season.
- The Los Angeles Kings have returned Sean Durzi to the AHL, which could be nothing more than a paper transaction between games. The Kings don’t play again until Wednesday, meaning there is time to save a bit of cap space by moving Durzi off the roster in the meantime. The 23-year-old defenseman is still waiting to make his NHL debut after recording 13 points in 12 games for the Ontario Reign to start the year.

Kevin Labanc Suspended One Game
The Department of Player Safety has decided to issue a one-game suspension to San Jose Sharks forward Kevin Labanc for his slew foot on St. Louis Blues forward Tyler Bozak last night. As the accompanying video explains:
It is important to note that there are many occasions during the course of a game where players use either their legs or stick and upper body to restrain or impede opponents, or to gain leverage during a puck battle. In the vast majority of these circumstances, these plays can be adequately punished by in-game penalties.
What causes this play to rise to the level of supplemental discipline is the speed the players are traveling, and their proximity to the boards.
The league notes that Labanc has not been fined or suspended in the past, which would have been taken into account when determining the length of this suspension. So too would an injury to Bozak, but the Blues forward was fortunate to not suffer a serious injury on the play.
Bozak did note how upset he was about the play, calling it “dangerous” and noting that he was lucky to not suffer an injury in that situation. Labanc insisted that he did not purposely deliver the slew foot, telling reporters he was just trying to battle hard.
Max Comtois Undergoes Hand Surgery
The Anaheim Ducks have announced that Max Comtois will be out for the next six weeks after he underwent surgery yesterday on his right hand to remove a small bone. Comtois hasn’t played in more than a week, last suiting up against the Seattle Kraken on November 11.
Despite being one of Anaheim’s brightest stars in 2020-21, Comtois has been nearly invisible this season. The 22-year-old forward registered just a single assist in 13 games before going down to injury, failing to score on any of his 19 shots. His minutes had been dropped, and even his physical play had seemed blunted compared to a year ago, when he recorded 33 points, 93 hits, and 40 penalty minutes in 55 games.
Now he’ll miss six weeks with hand surgery, hopefully, a procedure that can help him get back to the player he was last season. The Ducks, who dropped out of first place last night when their winning streak was snapped, don’t desperately need that Comtois to contend for a playoff spot, but it would certainly help.
It will be interesting to see how the lineup shakes out when Comtois is ready to return. The team already sent Benoit-Olivier Groulx to the minor leagues today after a few healthy scratches, and Mason McTavish will burn the first year of his entry-level contract with the next game he plays. The team has enough young depth to allow Comtois to take his time, but he’ll have to work hard to re-establish himself as a top-nine option upon his return.
NHL Postpones Ottawa Senators Games
Nov 19: The league has rescheduled Ottawa’s November 16 game against the Devils for December 6. The Senators are preparing for many of their players to exit the protocol tomorrow and reopen facilities. Their schedule will resume on Monday against the Colorado Avalanche.
Nov 15: With nearly half their regular roster in the COVID protocol, the Ottawa Senators will be shut down for the next several games. Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports that the team’s next three games–against the New Jersey Devils, Nashville Predators and New York Rangers–will be postponed. The team will stay off the ice until later this week and are currently scheduled to restart their season on Monday against the Colorado Avalanche. The league has confirmed the shutdown, indicating that not only are games postponed through November 20, but the team’s training facilities have been closed until further notice.
Matt Murray, Nikita Zaitsev, Connor Brown, Nick Holden, Austin Watson, Josh Brown, Victor Mete, Dylan Gambrell, Alex Formenton, and assistant coach Jack Capuano are currently in the protocol.
This is pretty close to a worst-case scenario for the league, which obviously hoped to get through this season without any COVID-related postponements. The league already watched as the San Jose Sharks played a half dozen games without seven key players, and the Senators have been struggling to find healthy defensemen in recent days. In fact, the Senators signed Zac Leslie to an NHL contract just yesterday to give them some more organizational depth, something that may not have been necessary now that they’re going to shut things down for a week.
Important to remember here is that the NHL still has the ability to opt-out of the 2022 Olympics if their schedule is adversely affected by COVID postponements in the coming months. That decision must be made by January 10, 2022, and would obviously create an incredibly challenging situation for the representing countries to find and prepare a substitute roster in just a few weeks. Keeping the schedule as is and hoping teams can get through outbreaks without postponement is obviously the goal, but with the Senators things had gotten out of control.
It is unclear when the postponed games will be played.
Marc Bergevin Enters COVID Protocol
The Montreal Canadiens won’t have their general manager traveling with them for the next little while, as Marc Bergevin has a confirmed positive case of COVID-19. The team announced that he is being monitored by the Canadiens’ medical staff and following league protocols.
Obviously, this situation isn’t the same as a player that is unable to take part in games, but it still means Bergevin will need to be isolated from the rest of the staff. The team lost again last night and has just one game remaining on its current homestand.
Hopefully, the active roster avoids any outbreak and the Canadiens are able to move on without any player hitting the COVID protocol list.
Justin Bailey Clears Waivers
Nov 19: Bailey has cleared waivers and will be assigned to the AHL.
Nov 18: The Vancouver Canucks have placed Justin Bailey on waivers, along with designating him for assignment. That means they clear the roster spot immediately, but Bailey will have to be assigned to the AHL should he clear tomorrow.
Now 26, Bailey has played in ten games this season for the Canucks but does not yet have a point. Originally a second-round pick by the Buffalo Sabres, to this point in his career he hasn’t been able to establish himself as a full-time NHL option. In the minor leagues Bailey is a top-level scorer, with 28 goals in 53 games during the 2019-20 campaign, but so far that hasn’t translated to the higher level. In his 78 career games, the 6’4″ forward has just five goals and nine points.
With Tyler Motte back in action, the team was carrying 14 forwards and were pushed right up against the cap. Sending Bailey’s league-minimum contract down would open up a roster spot and some cap space, perhaps letting them bring Jack Rathbone back up to join the defensive group.
There’s a chance he could be claimed, but with so many other forwards passing through waivers without a problem, Bailey seems like a safe bet to be assigned to Abbotsford tomorrow.
