Taxi Squad Shuffle: 04/10/21
There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:
Central Division
- The Blue Jackets have shuffled up their taxi squad, per a team release. Scott Harrington, Kole Sherwood, and Zac Dalpe have all been recalled to the active roster while Columbus has promoted Gavin Bayreuther and Andrew Peeke to the taxi squad.
- The Hurricanes have recalled Spencer Smallman to the taxi squad from AHL Chicago, per the AHL’s transactions log. The 24-year-old has played in three AHL games this season plus eight more with ECHL Fort Wayne.
- The Panthers made a few moves before their game against Dallas this afternoon. George Richards of Florida Hockey Now reports that Kevin Connauton was recalled to Florida’s active roster with Brady Keeper and Spencer Knight being sent to the taxi squad.
North Division
- As expected, Alex Formenton is back up with Ottawa as the Senators announced that they’ve recalled him from the taxi squad. The winger has two goals in seven games since being recalled in late March.
- The Montreal Canadiens have recalled Lukas Vejdemo to the taxi squad, per the AHL’s transactions log. Vejdemo is currently injured but his recall was needed to keep the taxi squad at the minimum of four players with Cayden Primeau, Jake Evans, and Otto Leskinen expected to be recalled for their game against Winnipeg.
- The Maple Leafs have recalled Michael Hutchinson from the taxi squad and Martin Marincin from AHL Toronto, per CapFriendly. Hutchinson will continue to serve as the backup goalie with Frederik Andersen retroactively placed on LTIR while Marincin gives them an extra blueliner to carry on the active roster. With the team in LTIR, they can afford to carry reserves instead of a minimum-sized group.
East Division
- The Sabres announced that they have recalled Jean-Sebastien Dea to the taxi squad from AHL Rochester while assigning Steven Fogarty to the Americans. Dea has played just once so far with Buffalo while Fogarty has suited up in eight games, notching a goal and two assists.
- The Devils have shuffled up their taxi squad, sending Ben Street to AHL Binghamton while promoting Marian Studenic, per the AHL’s transactions log. Studenic has seven points in 19 minor league games so far this season.
West Division

West Division
- The Los Angeles Kings have recalled Austin Strand and Christian Wolanin from the taxi squad, adding them to the active roster in time for tonight’s game against San Jose. Wolanin would be making his Kings debut if he gets into the lineup this evening.
- The Anaheim Ducks have made their typical gameday recalls. Per CapFriendly, David Backes, Chase De Leo, and Sam Carrick have all been recalled from the taxi squad. Carrick has a point (one goal, one assist) in his two games since being promoted earlier this month.
- The Arizona Coyotes have recalled Michael Bunting from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The 25-year-old had a hat trick on Monday and has four goals and an assist in five games this season.
- The Colorado Avalanche have promoted Kyle Burroughs, Keaton Middleton, and Liam O’Brien from the taxi squad on an emergency basis, per CapFriendly. Middleton is expected to make his NHL debut tonight.
- The Minnesota Wild have recalled Luke Johnson and Kyle Rau from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The two have been shuffled back and forth routinely in recent days to save some cap room.
- The San Jose Sharks have recalled Antti Suomela and Jeffrey Viel from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Viel has ten penalty minutes in five games this season while Suomela has suited up in four NHL contests thus far.
- The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Nicolas Hague from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The 22-year-old has picked up 14 points in 32 games this season while logging just over 16 minutes per contest.
North Division
- The Toronto Maple Leafs have added Joseph Duszak to the taxi squad, filling the sixth available spot with the young defenseman. Duszak, 23, was an undrafted free agent signing by the Maple Leafs in 2019 and split last season between the ECHL and AHL. This season he has eight points in 19 games for the Toronto Marlies.
- The Ottawa Senators have re-assigned Alex Formenton to the taxi squad, a normal off-day move as they prepare for action tomorrow night. Formenton has two goals in seven games for the Senators this season.
- The Montreal Canadiens have sent Cayden Primeau and Jake Evans back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Both were up on emergency recalls the last two days and will likely be promoted again tomorrow.
- The Winnipeg Jets have sent Kristian Vesalainen back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The 2017 first-rounder has just an assist in eight games this season while averaging just 7:35 per outing.
Central Division
- The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned Zac Dalpe to the taxi squad, moving Liam Foudy to the AHL in the process. Foudy, one of the team’s top prospects, has just three points in 18 games this season and is still looking for his first NHL goal. The 21-year-old still has a very high offensive ceiling but hasn’t been able to find much consistency at the highest level so far.
- The Detroit Red Wings have brought Mathias Brome and Taro Hirose straight up from the AHL to the active roster, moving Evgeny Svechnikov to the taxi squad in the process. Gustav Lindstrom has also been re-assigned to the taxi squad from the AHL.
- The Carolina Hurricanes are off today which means Jake Bean is once again back on the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Bean has 11 points in 29 games this season and will almost certainly be recalled for tomorrow’s game against Detroit.
- The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled Brandon Pirri from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. It’s his fourth recall in just over three weeks although he only has played once in the NHL this season. Alec Regula was also sent to AHL Rockford.
- The Nashville Predators have sent David Farrance and Tyler Lewington to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Farrance logged nearly 14 minutes in his NHL debut yesterday while Lewington had an assist in his Nashville debut in that game as well.
East Division
- The Buffalo Sabres have recalled Arttu Ruotsalainen from the taxi squad, moving Steven Fogarty back in his place. Ruotsalainen is expected to make his NHL debut tonight after playing 13 games for the Rochester Americans in his first year of North American pro hockey.
- The Boston Bruins have sent Anton Blidh to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The winger has a goal in six games this season, four of which have come over the past two weeks.
- The New Jersey Devils have promoted Ben Street from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The veteran has 14 points in as many games with AHL Binghamton but hasn’t suited up in the NHL this year.
- The Philadelphia Flyers have sent Shayne Gostisbehere to the taxi squad while recalling Derrick Pouliot, per CapFriendly, a move that frees up a bit of extra cap space for the day. Tanner Laczynski was also sent to AHL Lehigh Valley.

College Notes: Team USA, Hellickson, Ford, Peart
Though it should come as no surprise, USA Hockey has officially tabbed Providence College head coach Nate Leaman to lead the American entry into the 2022 World Junior Championship. Leaman coached Team USA to a gold medal this year and more than earned another go-round as head coach. “It’s always an honor to be asked to coach for my country and I’m grateful to be back behind the bench,” Leaman stated. “I’m excited to see some familiar faces, and coach some of America’s best young talent, as we look to build another championship roster.” The Friars’ bench boss, who has also been linked to NHL openings in the past, has nearly two decades of experience as a head coach at the college level, not only finding consistent success in the standings, but also in developing NHLers. Leaman will also be making his fourth appearance at the WJC for the U.S., but only his second as head coach. The Americans have medaled in six of the past seven tournaments, including two gold medals, so the bar has been raised for their performance. Fortunately, with Leaman at the helm they are in good hands in 2022.
- Notre Dame defenseman Matt Hellickson has signed with the Devils, but not the ones who drafted him – at least not yet. Hellickson, a seventh-round selection of New Jersey back in 2017, has signed a contract with the AHL’s Binghamton Devils for the remainder of the season, the team announced. The organization going in this direction with the prospect defender as opposed to signing an entry-level contract that begins next season and merely finishing the year in Binghampton on an amateur tryout raises questions about his future. It seems possible that the Devils are still hoping to see more development from the four-year Fighting Irish starter before handing him an NHL contract. Hellickson, 23, was not as productive in the NCAA as he had been in the USHL before he was drafted, but was still a reliable presence on the back end for Notre Dame. Perhaps the concern from New Jersey is not that Hellickson is not pro ready, but simply lacks NHL upside. He will look to prove otherwise over the rest of the season.
- As the NCAA transfer market continues to operate like NHL free agency this off-season, another notable name is moving on. Bowling Green captain Connor Ford has announced that he will spend his graduate season at North Dakota. Ford, 23, has been one of Bowling Green’s best players in each of his four seasons and has certainly drawn some attention from the pro ranks. However, this move likely indicates that his current offers were of the AHL variety instead of NHL entry-level proposals, so he will take his chances with a fifth year in college. If Ford is able to maintain his top scorer status with a power house like North Dakota, those NHL offers should roll in next year for the impressive forward.
- As if St. Cloud State University needed anything else to be excited about, the NCAA Tournament finalist can now claim to be the future home of the best high school player in the state. Defenseman Jack Peart has been named the 2021 recipient of the Mr. Hockey Award as Minnesota high school hockey’s top athlete. The dynamic defender recorded a stunning 11 goals and 35 points in just 18 games for Grand Rapids High this year, earning him the honors. He added 11 goals in 18 games for the USHL’s Fargo Force as well. The offensive blue liner is a game-changer on the back end, which will likely lead to his selection in the second or third round of the upcoming NHL Draft. He will then head to St. Cloud where he will be expected to take on a big role right away. There is a strong correlation between winning the Mr. Hockey Award and finding NCAA success and playing in the NHL, with past winners including Ryan McDonagh, Nick Leddy, Nick Bjugstad, and Casey Mittelstadt. Peart is a name to keep an eye on.

West Division
- The Los Angeles Kings have assigned Christian Wolanin to the taxi squad now that he has cleared the protocol following his March trade. He’ll skate with the team for the first time today.
- The Arizona Coyotes have assigned Hudson Fasching to the AHL, moving him off the roster and giving him a chance to get his game going at the minor league level. The 25-year-old forward hasn’t scored in four games for the Coyotes this season.
North Division
- The Ottawa Senators have recalled Michael Amadio and Erik Brannstrom from the taxi squad, sending Braydon Coburn back to it in their place. Amadio was acquired from the Kings just over a week ago and has yet to make his Senators debut.
Central Division
- The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled Drew Shore to the taxi squad, giving them an extra forward ahead of their game tonight against Florida. Shore has failed to score a single goal at any level this season, with just one point in seven AHL games.
- The Florida Panthers have recalled some very interesting names to the active roster, bringing up Brady Keeper and young goaltending prospect Spencer Knight. Knight, the 13th overall pick in 2019, recently ended his college career and turned pro with the Panthers.
- The Nashville Predators have done a similar move, recalling David Farrance and Tyler Lewington from the taxi squad. Farrance, 21, was one of the best players in college hockey the last two seasons and could quickly step into the NHL with the Predators.
- As usual, the Detroit Red Wings have made a number of transactions, starting with a recall of Michael Rasmussen, Givani Smith, and Evgeni Svechnikov from the taxi squad. The team has moved Frans Nielsen, Calvin Pickard, and Dennis Cholowski–the latter from the AHL–to the taxi squad in their place.
- The Dallas Stars have made their regular forward shuffle. Today, the move is promoting Justin Dowling and Joel L’Esperance from the taxi squad to the active roster.
East Division
- After clearing waivers, Richard Panik has been moved to the Washington Capitals taxi squad according to Samantha Pell of the Washington Post. Daniel Carr has been promoted to the active roster in his place. Panik has recorded just three goals and nine points in 36 games this season and now finds himself on the outside looking in.
- As expected, both A.J. Greer and Mason Jobst have been immediately loaned to the AHL after the New Jersey Devils acquired them last night. The pair of minor league forwards were part of the return for Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac, but don’t look to have big futures in New Jersey and were likely included for contractual reasons.
- After sending them down yesterday, the Buffalo Sabres have brought C.J. Smith and Brandon Davidson back up from the AHL and added them to the taxi squad. The pair played but couldn’t help Rochester topple the Syracuse Crunch yesterday.

Snapshots: Johnson, Winnik, NCAA Transfers
After Adam Johnson‘s sudden and unexpected departure from the SHL’s Malmo Redhawks, the forward has landed back in North America. Johnson has signed a contract with the AHL’s Ontario Reign for the remainder of the year, the team announced. This isn’t quite the NHL contract that was expected when Johnson returned home from Sweden, but is still a good opportunity for the 26-year-old to show off for the L.A. Kings and other NHL teams before the off-season. Johnson played in 13 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins over the past two years, recording four points, and has put up good numbers in the AHL previously. The University of Minnesota-Duluth product is hoping that another strong showing in the minors will prove that he is worthy of another NHL deal.
- Veteran forward Daniel Winnik will not be returning home, though. Winnik, 36, will continue his playing career for at least another season by signing a one-year extension with Geneve-Servette of the Swiss National League. The contract also includes an additional option year, if the experienced pro actually has two years left in him. Winnik played in nearly 800 career NHL games before departing for Switzerland in 2018, suiting up for eight different teams along the way. He has found more consistency in the second stage of his career, having already played three seasons with Geneve-Servette and now gaining one or two more to come. Winnik has excelled overseas even in his late thirties, playing at a near point-per-game pace.
- There will be a number of familiar faces in new places across the NCAA next season. It has already been an unprecedented off-season for notable transfers, even with the Frozen Four still yet to be played. More than a dozen players have already switched schools, including some NHL prospects. Two of the more recent names to make a change include Vegas Golden Knights’ forward prospect Brandon Kruse and Winnipeg Jets’ goalie prospect Jared Moe. Kruse, 22, has already played four full seasons at Bowling Green, but will take advantage of his fifth year of eligibility due to COVID to become a graduate transfer to Boston College, the program confirmed. The 2018 fifth-round pick has been one of the Falcons’ best forwards and is a nice pickup for the Eagles, who are still believed to be in the running for several other noteworthy transfers as well. Moe, 21, is moving on from Minnesota after sitting behind Carolina Hurricanes’ prospect Jack LaFontaine this season (and LaFontaine has committed to another year with the Gophers as well). Moe has reported on his own that he will flip to Big Ten rival Wisconsin next season, where the starting job is at least open to competition. Moe may not be the only Winnipeg keeper to transfer this off-season too; UMass Lowell goaltender Logan Neaton is also in the NCAA Transfer Portal after he too was used sparingly this season.
Vegas Golden Knights Sign Maxim Marushev
The Vegas Golden Knights have signed one of the very last few picks of the 2020 draft, inking Maxim Marushev to a two-year entry-level contract. The deal begins in the 2021-22 season, meaning he won’t be eligible for any action with the NHL club this year.
Already 22, Marushev went undrafted several times before the Golden Knights finally used the 215th overall pick on him in October. After recording 40 points in 35 VHL games last season and making his KHL debut, his numbers dropped considerably for the minor league Bars Kazan team in 2020-21, putting up just 21 points in 37 games. Regardless of the offensive decline, the Golden Knights still believe in him enough to hand over an entry-level deal and bring him into the organization.
It’s not clear what the plans are for the young Russian yet, or whether he’ll come over to join the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL down the stretch. For now, he’s just a seventh-round flier that the Vegas development staff will eagerly get their hands on at some point down the road.
Arizona Coyotes Sign Ty Emberson
The Arizona Coyotes have added another college prospect, signing Ty Emberson to a three-year entry-level contract. The deal will kick in immediately, meaning Emberson is burning the first year for the 2020-21 season but is eligible for recall to the Coyotes right away. For now, he’ll report to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL. GM Bill Armstrong released a short statement on his newest player:
We are very pleased to sign Ty to an entry-level contract. Ty is a good two-way defenseman who can play in all situations. He is another good prospect for us, and we look forward to monitoring his development.
Emberson, 20, finished his junior season at the University of Wisconsin when the Badgers were knocked out of the NCAA tournament and like several of his teammates has decided to turn pro. Selected 73rd overall in 2018, the young defenseman had 13 points in 31 games this season, his best offensive performance in college. That was actually the most points by a Wisconsin defenseman as their forwards carried most of the offensive load, but production at that end of the rink isn’t really Emberson’s forte anyway.
Instead, he’s lauded for his mobility and physicality, ending rushes by aggressively closing on attackers. Add that kind of strong defensive presence and ability to skate the puck out of trouble to the leadership qualities that made Emberson the captain of the Badgers this season and you have a legitimate NHL prospect, even if his ceiling is somewhat limited. Though he is reporting to the Roadrunners, it shouldn’t be that long before Emberson is challenging for playing time with the Coyotes in a depth role.
Chicago Blackhawks Purchase Rockford IceHogs
If you’re a fan of the Rockford IceHogs, today was a good day. The Chicago Blackhawks have officially announced the purchase of the minor league affiliate, agreeing to keep the IceHogs in Rockford until at least 2036. The two clubs had already been affiliated since 2007, but the IceHogs had previously operated as an independent and were owned by the city of Rockford.
While the purchase price comes in at $11.8MM, the deal will also include further investment in the BMO Harris Bank Center. The Blackhawks become the 21st NHL team to own their AHL affiliate, a situation that only helps the development and stability of minor league players.
Rockford is having a terrible season, winning just six of their first 19 games in the remade Central Division. But with this kind of investment, the Blackhawks will have even further incentive to make the IceHogs not only a development stop but a dominant minor league franchise.
Many of the players that have helped Chicago become Stanley Cup champions in the past have spent time in the AHL with Rockford. Names like Corey Crawford, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Brandon Saad, and Andrew Shaw all spent some of their formative playing years with the IceHogs, developing the skills that would lead them to success in the NHL.

- The Arizona Coyotes have recalled forwards Michael Chaput and Lane Pederson from the taxi squad. Pederson has only played in two games with the ‘Yotes this season but has recorded a point, while Chaput is scoreless through ten games.
North Division
- The Ottawa Senators have recalled Alex Formenton from the taxi squad, an expected move with the team back in action later today. The 21-year-old Formenton has two points in five games for the Senators this season.
- The Winnipeg Jets have recalled Kristian Vesalainen from the AHL to the taxi squad. Vesalainen has actually played eight games for the Jets this season, but is still looking for his first NHL goal.
Central Division
- The Columbus Blue Jackets have moved Liam Foudy and Alexandre Texier to the taxi squad for their off day, as they prepare to take on the Lightning in a rematch tomorrow night. The Blue Jackets downed their divisional rival last night with both youngsters in the lineup. Columbus continues to move players off the roster between games in order to bank cap space and save some salary.
- The Dallas Stars have re-assigned Justin Dowling to the taxi squad after he played in yesterday’s game against the Blackhawks. Dowling, 30, has played 16 of his 65 career NHL games this season.
- As usual, the Detroit Red Wings have made several moves, assigning Michael Rasmussen, Givani Smith and Evgeny Svechnkiov to the taxi squad. Mathias Brome, Dennis Cholowski and Gustav Lindstrom have been moved back to the AHL to make room.
East Division
- The New York Islanders have returned Grant Hutton to the AHL after using him for taxi squad purposes this week. The 25-year-old defenseman has never played in an NHL game and has just two points in 14 contests for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season.
- The Buffalo Sabres have sent C.J. Smith and Brandon Davidson to the Rochester Americans in time for the Amerks game this evening. Smith, 26, has seven points in six AHL games this season.

West Division
- The Minnesota Wild have returned Dereck Baribeau to the AHL, leaving Andrew Hammond as the taxi squad goaltender for the team. Baribeau is still waiting to make his NHL debut but does have a .920 save percentage in five AHL games this season. Nico Sturm and Luke Johnson were also sent back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.
- The Los Angeles Kings have returned Lias Andersson, Sean Durzi, and Matt Luff to the AHL, recalling Mark Alt to the taxi squad in the process. The Ontario Reign will play later this evening, meaning all three can get some added game action. Drake Rymsha was also recalled to the Kings with Austin Strand and Kale Clague being dropped to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.
- The Anaheim Ducks have recalled Simon Benoit and Benoit-Olivier Groulx from the AHL to the taxi squad, giving the youngsters a taste of the NHL life for the time being. The team notably moved Trevor Zegras back to the AHL yesterday to begin his transition to center, leaving them with just 20 players on the roster and three skaters on the taxi squad before today’s moves. Sam Carrick and David Backes were later recalled to the active roster, per CapFriendly.
- The Arizona Coyotes sent Jordan Gross back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The defenseman has three assists in six games so far this season.
- The Colorado Avalanche returned Kyle Burroughs and Liam O’Brien to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Burroughs made his NHL debut on Monday while O’Brien has played in three games since being converted to an NHL contract last month.
- The San Jose Sharks have recalled Christian Jaros and Noah Gregor from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Jaros is expected to make his San Jose debut with Marc-Edouard Vlasic injured while Gregor has three goals in 15 games.
- The Vegas Golden Knights have returned Nicolas Hague and Cody Glass to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Both players were recalled under roster emergency cap-exempt recalls on Monday.
North Division
- The Ottawa Senators have made several moves, including recalling Marcus Hogberg and Jack Kopacka to the taxi squad. Alex Formenton has been moved to the taxi squad from the active roster, and Filip Gustavsson is going all the way down to the AHL. With Hogberg back and healthy, it appears he will return to his role as one of the three goaltenders at the NHL level.
- The Montreal Canadiens loaned Paul Byron to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The move, which has been made frequently as of late, banks them a bit of cap space with the trade deadline looming. Brandon Baddock was sent back to the AHL in a corresponding move.
- The Toronto Maple Leafs have sent Alex Galchenyuk, Veini Vehvilainen, and Michael Hutchinson to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Those moves resulted in Ian Scott and Martin Marincin being sent from the taxi squad to the minors.
Central Division
- Vinnie Hinostroza has been added to the Chicago Blackhawks active roster after making the drive up from Florida following his trade. To make room, Lucas Wallmark has been moved to the taxi squad after clearing waivers earlier today.
- The Detroit Red Wings have made several transactions including recalling Mathias Brome, Dennis Cholowski, and Gustav Lindstrom to the taxi squad. Frans Nielsen, Michael Rasmussen, Givani Smith, Evgeny Svechnikov, and Alex Biega have all been recalled from the taxi squad to the active roster ahead of tonight’s game against the Nashville Predators.
- Those Predators have recalled Rem Pitlick from the taxi squad after head coach John Hynes said that Viktor Arvidsson will not play tonight. Arvidsson continues to deal with his upper-body injury and is nearing a return, with “significant progress” made in his recovery.
- The Carolina Hurricanes have promoted Morgan Geekie from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The 22-year-old has two goals in 17 games this season.
- Following the placement of Riley Nash on IR, the Columbus Blue Jackets recalled Liam Foudy and Zac Dalpe from the taxi squad. Foudy has three assists in 16 games this season while Dalpe has been held off the scoresheet in his three contests.
- The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled Luke Schenn from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Schenn, despite making many appearances on this list, has still managed to play in 23 games this season. Daniel Walcott was recalled in a corresponding move.
East Division
- The Boston Bruins have recalled Jack Ahcan and Callum Booth from the AHL, placing them on the taxi squad for the time being. The Bruins are dealing with an injury to Tuukka Rask and a positive coronavirus test for Jaroslav Halak, greatly depleting their NHL goaltending depth in the short term.
