Wyatt Kaiser has been the Hawks best D man so far? Sorry but that is nowhere near true. Rinzel has been far and away the best D man And Vlasic and Rinzel should be the # 1 pairing for a long time. As for Kaiser I could make a case that he shouldn’t even be here that either Del Mastro or Korchinski would be better than Kaiser right now and Kaiser should be trade bait. Sorry Josh!
Chicago’s GF/60 at even strength w/Kaiser: 3.9
Chicago’s GF/60 at even strength w/Rinzel: 3.5
Chicago’s GA/60 at even strength w/Kaiser: 1.0
Chicago’s GA/60 at even strength w/Rinzel: 2.0
Even if you ignore possession impacts and just look at those raw numbers, Chicago’s had greater success on both sides of the puck with Kaiser out there. Kaiser also plays more at even strength than Rinzel and has a tougher defensive deployment. I would caution against overvaluing power-play performance.
Yet you completely ignore Rinzel plays more on the PK than he has on the PP this year because of the ridiculous officiating so far. So advantage Rinzel. Thanks Josh!
The Hawks trade for Spencer Knight is looking like a genuine steal right now. As far as D-men go, Rinzel has clearly looked the best, I haven’t been real impressed with Lev or Kaiser so far.
Getting rid of Jones was addition by subtraction without the return. Knight has been stellar and Rinzel has stepped in for Jones and has been a ridiculous improvement. It’s way early but you can say that the Hawks now have 4 solid Goalies in Knight, Arvid, Commesso and Berehznoy without even counting Broissoit and Gajan. Arty is having his Korchinski moment because he’s too good for Rockford but not ready for big NHL minutes yet. Blashill has been doing a great job of going 11-7 so that Arty doesn’t have to play big minutes but you can see him growing little by little. Hawks haven’t even made the draft pick they got from Florida yet so that trade just keeps oozing benefits so far. The reason the Hawks have been improved is the defense has been solid. Has it been perfect? No but it’s way better and should keep getting better and younger as the season goes on. Rockford could be 5-0 so there is a ton of talent there also so it’s also deep. I think a lot of people are going to regret bashing the Hawks this year. It’s been interesting so far.
