Philadelphia Flyers Gauging Trade Interest In Scott Laughton

February 1, 2024 at 2:44 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 15 Comments

The Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly gauging interest in centerman Scott Laughton on the trade market, per TSN’s Darren Dreger. Dreger shares that, while Philadelphia would be hesitant to move Laughton, they’re willing to hear offers with the market for centerman now largely dried up. Only three centermen remain in TSN’s Trade Bait series – Adam Henrique, Sean Monahan, and Jack Roslovic – after Elias Lindholm was moved to the Vancouver Canucks.

Teams were reportedly offering late first-round picks for Laughton last summer, though Philadelphia preferred to hang onto the depth centerman. The team drafted Laughton 20th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft and awarded him his NHL debut in the very next season. He’s played in every season since, totaling 569 games and 219 points across 11 years with the Flyers, establishing himself as a focal piece of the team’s bottom-six forwards and penalty-killing units. He has even earned a power-play role over the last few seasons, helping him reach a career-high 43 points in 78 games last season. That scoring production hasn’t continued into this year – with Laughton boasting just 20 points through 50 games, his lowest point-per-game pace since the 2020-21 season.

Still, a bottom-of-the-lineup centerman who can play on both special teams carries undeniable value. Laughton’s contract makes him even more valuable, with the 29-year-old sitting at a $3MM cap hit over the next three seasons – the second-cheapest among any centermen on TSN’s trade board and the only one with a contract beyond this season. A first-round pick is likely the starting bid in any Laughton trade discussions, though it may take a lot more to get Philadelphia to part with the 500-game veteran of the club.

If they can get a first and a b level prospect they should trade him immediately.

I think he would already be gone if teams were offering that.

Feels like the Flyers best hope is to wait until everyone else is off the board to see if a team gets desperate. And even then I think a first rounder is unlikely. Maybe a second + third or a second and a B-prospect in that case.

He is not worth a 1st but I know at least one desperate team will offer up one to make a trade.

Laughton’s the type of player that can be hugely valuable in a long playoff run.

Goals are what win games but middle/bottom 6 hard nosed, face off winning grinders win series IMO. The punishment stacks and thats why big bodied power forward types are so valuable playoff time. Im bot sure Laughton fits that bill exactly but winning faceoffs and killing penalties are also extremely valuable

He’s underrated. I think he makes a VERY good upgrade at 3C for contending teams. See Colorado, Boston, etc. etc.

Do you think the Flyers could get Ty Dellandrea from the Stars for Scott Laughton strait up? I would like to hear opinions about that proposal.

Ty is a non tender candidate. No way that happens. Maybe Ty and 2 seconds. Maybe.

I would think we would rather keep the righty shooting C/W that has more cost control.
Stars going for a RHD is the only way I’d see them trade Dellandrea, and I still think it’d take a young RHD to make it worth it.

I may be way off, but reports of Jiricek being upset in Columbus have me hoping Nill is on the phones offering up Bourque plus picks to make it happen.

I would disagree with the non-tender candidate angle. He plays great defense, and still has potential offensively. He put up offense in juniors and skates well. I think the lack of scoring will keep his contract so low that it would be crazy for a cap strapped team like the Stars to throw away a close to minimum salary so young into his career.

Agree with all the positive reviews of Laughton. He’s been really good this season. Looks like his baseline too. I’d like to see him stay on the Flyers but if they get a 1st and a top prospect that would be a pretty sweet deal. As primarily a kraken watcher, I’m curious what they’ll do as the deadline approaches of course. Alex Wennberg is having his best season yet with the team by far. Doesn’t have tons of points but he’s playing more physically, great defensive skill, handles, play driving ability.. great shot when he takes it. Such an awesome player. Obviously I hope the kraken extend him but it’s interesting his name doesn’t come up often. I’m glad for that but I gotta give the man props. He’s a top player. Love to see 21 out there.

Not even worth a first, if you get that you have to take that deal.
