Flyers’ Tony DeAngelo To Have Hearing For Spearing Corey Perry

March 8, 2023 at 9:23 am CDT | by Tanner Holubar 40 Comments

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo will have a hearing today for spearing Tampa Bay Lightning forward Corey Perry during Tuesday’s game between the two teams, according to the NHL Player Safety Twitter account.

DeAngelo was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct following the incident, in which DeAngelo skated toward Perry after the puck was frozen by Tampa goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, and drove his stick into Perry, according to TSN.

“I was trying to give him a little shot. I wasn’t looking for it to go there,” DeAngelo told reporters. “He tried to slash my stick out of my hands the second beforehand. He talks all game. So, asked him to fight. Doesn’t want to fight. He’ll tell you that he’s asked me to fight for years. I don’t say no. So there’s not much of an argument there.”

DeAngelo is no stranger to controversy, as he has is on his third team in three seasons. He has provided strong play for the lowly Flyers, with 10 goals and 24 assists in 59 games. He is in the first season of a two-year contract with an AAV of $5MM.

Spearing is a penalty that can result in disciplinary action, and DeAngelo’s status for upcoming games will be known following the hearing.

    deangelo is a weird little guy , hilarious how he tries to justify his actions by saying he asked for a fight and never backs down.

      Sorry you can’t read the English language. I guess you didn’t get a very good education attending a Democrat big city school system. There are adult education classes, where you can be taught to read. Reading is a very useful skill, I suggest you brush up on it.

    The “second beforehand” he was skating off to the side by himself away from the scrum. No such thing happened without his having a lot of time to contemplate what he was about to do.

    Not to absolve De Angelo but but if there’s a god Perry will get to spend an eternity in Hades next to Tom Wilson.

      Lemme tell ya a story, Junior

      Chris Simon was a big goon in his day. He was suspended multiple times for losing his temper, including stomping on an opponent’s leg, with a sharpened skate. One day at Capitals practice, Chris was the last one off the ice, since he had been working back into shape after an injury. He was obviously tired, sweat pouring off of him, but he graciously stopped to have his picture taken with my daughter, and mustered a broad smile.

      I’ve met Tom Wilson, Donald Brashear,Craig Berube and other Capital tough guys over the years. And the point is that they happen to be some of the nicest, most accommodating players off the ice. Maybe your hell remark was a rhetorical flourish, but it’s not apt

      You bring up an interesting philosophical question. Do good deeds cancel out bad ones? I say no….but obviously others may disagree.

      I think we must also remember that just because you’ve met this people and they were nice doesn’t mean they’re nice people all together. What you see is not necessarily what they are in their own personal lives. Just like my place of work. My staff always laugh when they hear other people in different departments say that I look mean, unapproachable and intense. My staff always explain they couldn’t be any further from the truth. Remember, people will only show you what they want you to see.

      @Skid

      You’re right, but I was separating the working style, and the personal life of hockey players. Hockey is a dangerous sport, these guys get hurt, sometimes badly. If you’re afraid of getting hurt, you shouldn’t be playing. On the ice is a job, and the guy who may be intent on injuring his opponent during game play, may be a loving family man and a gentleman, when out of uniform. I once saw Steve Ott, who won’t get Xmas cards from Bruins fans for his shenanigans, leading his 3year old daughter gently by the hand, thru the Stars practice facility.

      The point is that hockey players doing their jobs on the ice, albeit sometimes bending, or smashing, the rules, don’t deserve “hell”. Most are nice guys, who do a lot of charity work, as well.

      @osonvs

      True, but I’ve found that at practices, they’re pretty much the human beings they are. I’ve talked with broadcasters Craig Laughlin and Darryl Reaugh also, and they tell me that the players are pretty much as you see them. Of course, you could have a situation like Bobby Hull, a much loved player, who was an abusive slimeball in real life. There’s exceptions to everything.

      Adam Oates, who has never been mistaken for a goon, is one of the biggest jerks I’ve ever met, and not just in hockey. Tyler Seguin is also a creep. People were always telling me what a great guy Rod Langway is, but the one time I met him, he was surly and unfriendly. Maybe I caught him at a bad time. I’ve found the tough guys to be the nicest players, though an exception to that rule is Peter Bondra. Class act, on and off the ice

      The OP mentioned DeAngelo’s talent and lack of character. The comparison is applicable, because when you think of a hockey player who is immensely talented, and as principled as an inner city p I M p….at least on the ice, you automatically think of Marchand.

      As a Flyers fan I appreciate TDA taking one for the team here. This is, after all, the only way to make Fletcher let the prospects play – by forcing them to fill in.

      There just needs to be separation of TDA the player and TDA the person here.

      What he did was messed up from a hockey perspective. Plain and simple.

    My favorite line in the article:

    He has provided strong play for the lowly Flyers, with 10 goals and 24 assists in 59 games.

    He’s been horrible. Slavin hid Hamilton and DeAngelo’s inabilities and is gelling really well with Burns.

      To be fair, Dougie was much better defensively than TDA until he broke his leg. He hasnt been the same since.

    Isn’t Tony DeAngelo a wrestler in WWE’s NXT developmental brand? A hearing about illegal spearing sounds appropriate for wrestling.

    All you need to know. Almost all of Corey Perry teammates throughout the years love the guy. Very few of Tony DeAngelo teammates even like him. Notice everyone on ice with Perry went after DeAngelo.
