Jakob Chychrun Remains Out Of Arizona Lineup

February 13, 2023 at 12:35 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 16 Comments

Though he still hasn’t been traded, it appears as though Jakob Chychrun’s time as an Arizona Coyote is over. According to Adam Vingan of Sportsnet, head coach Andre Tourigny confirmed Chychrun will remain out of the lineup “until something happens.”

Notably, Karel Vejmelka will start tonight. Vejmelka has also been the center of trade rumors recently, but the team will not pull him out of the lineup like Chychrun.

It appeared as though there was a deal in place for Chychrun over the weekend, but nothing has happened to this point. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts podcast today speculated that a different contract or trade situation was holding up a deal (potentially with the Los Angeles Kings). Brandt Clarke, who had his name reported as a return for Chychrun, has apparently been told by the Kings he is not involved in any deal and will not be traded.

At the very least, it appears as though the months-long speculation about Chychrun will soon come to an end. The young defenseman wanted a trade out of Arizona to play for a contender, but general manager Bill Armstrong would never rush to move him. If a team wanted Chychrun, they would have to pay a high price that Arizona set.

With 28 points in 36 games and outstanding possession numbers, Chychrun has certainly made the Coyotes’ job easier. His play coming back from injury has warranted interest, and it appears as though someone is finally willing to meet that price.

Remember that Arizona already has a huge number of high picks over the next few seasons, and should only add more at this year’s deadline. No rebuild is guaranteed to work, but the management group there has at least set itself up for future success by pulling off creative transactions to add future value. The trade of Chychrun could be the capstone to that strategy, as a 24-year-old defenseman under control for two more seasons at a reasonable cap hit is one of the most valuable assets in the league. Risking that return by playing him the next few nights doesn’t make much sense.

They aren’t going anywhere. I don’t know why some of you can’t accept this.

Phew! I hope LA telling Clarke he’s not being moved is true.

    Don’t trade Byfield & Clarke! I’m thinking Turcotte, Spence, Walker & a conditional 1st.

Random, but I found this line in a story about how lousy Tony DeAngelo is…

“Tortorella isn’t kidding that DeAngelo needs to be better defensively. Out of all NHL defensemen with at least 200 minutes played at even strength this season, DeAngelo ranks third-worst in the league in terms of impact on his team’s ability to prevent expected goals, ahead of only John Klingberg and Ian Mitchell.”

Yinzers wanted to jettison Kris Letang, the most important defenseman in Pittsburgh Penguins history and coming off the best season of his entire career, to sign this load named John Klingberg….because he was younger.

    Genius.

The way things have unfolded in the last 36 hours, This tells me there could be many moving parts. Maybe as many as 6 or more players and pics. Chychrun is obviously the centerpiece but I think the Kings will move Durzi and another multi million dollar contract and at least one high value prospect and a 1st or 2nd rounder.

Remember everything needs to fit with cap space. Kings want to unload Cal Peterson desperately. They will likely have to take back a percentage of his $5m to do it… maybe as much as 50%.

      My guess is this.
      LAK/AZC IIafallo $4m, Durzi $1,7m, Walker $2.7m, Fagemo $0.8m, a highish draft pick and Peterson at 50% $2.5m

      AZC/LAK Chychrun $4.6m, Gostisbhre $4.5m, Vejmelka 2.7m

Turcotte is ready to take AI’s Spot at 2F.

Kings will be serious deep threat for the next 6-8 years and AZC will have a monster rebuild Lego set to seriously complete in 3-5 years

That trade idea, while fun, is insane.

What I was trying to say that one reporter or expert tells us what teams are involved then others jump on the info and say it was them first reporting this deal …I know rumors are rumors but this is old news So sit on that…

Thanks Bucky, do you scream at your mother with the caps lock on? Now get back in the basement before you embarrass her even more.

I’m a Chychrun fan and wish he’d not asked to be/been offered a trade. That said, some interesting stats:
36 Games played this season with Chychrun, .389 points %, 2.61 GF, 3.41 GA, 12.8% PP, 71.4% PK.
    18 games this season w/out Chychrun. .444 points %, 2.78 GF, 3.67 GA, 31% PP, 83% PK

The Yotes are better in every category except Goals Against when Chychrun is in the lineup. Trade him and get as much as possible.
