Carolina Hurricanes Sign Tony DeAngelo

July 28, 2021 at 1:50 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 56 Comments

July 28: The contract has been officially announced by the Hurricanes. One year and $1MM for DeAngelo, who is still earning some of his salary from the Rangers as well. GM Don Waddell released a short statement about his newest defenseman:

Tony is a smooth-skating, puck-moving defenseman. We’ve done a lot of background work on this player and we are confident that he can be a positive addition to our group.

July 27: The Carolina Hurricanes are closing in on a one-year deal with recently bought-out defenseman Tony DeAngelo, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. Seravalli notes that there was a lot of interest in DeAngelo, but that the opportunity to play for head coach Rod Brind’Amour was appealing to him. The deal is not yet signed and no financial details have been reported at this time.

It will create a public relations mess in Carolina to bring in DeAngelo, who was sent away from the Rangers organization this season after several incidents involving teammates. The last one was between DeAngelo and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, which led to the defensemen being placed on waivers. At the time, GM Jeff Gorton explained that it wasn’t just one incident that led to the decision, instead telling reporters that he had warned the defenseman “if his name came up in anything at all” he would find himself on waivers. DeAngelo cleared and would not play for the Rangers again.

While a trade was explored, DeAngelo declined a contract termination that would have allowed him to sign elsewhere last season, instead forcing the Rangers into a buyout this summer. He will earn one-third of the $5.3MM that was remaining on his contract with the Rangers after clearing unconditional waivers a few days ago, but should this deal go through, will now be able to collect a paycheck from the Hurricanes as well.

There isn’t anyone that doubts DeAngelo’s offensive ability, as the 25-year-old defenseman recorded 15 goals and 53 points in the 2019-20 season. He earned Norris Trophy votes that season after playing so well, which has always been the trade-off when it comes to him. Even going back to his junior career, DeAngelo has been embroiled in controversy with his teammates. Whether he can make that side of the game work in Carolina remains to be seen, but it appears as though the organization will try.

Does this imply that the Dougie Hamilton era really might be over? Or is Don Waddell thinking this is *another* Tony DeAngelo?

Think so, would save them a ton in cap space to add other pieces. Similar production to dougie if basing on 2 years ago.

@Tatsumaki – To be fair, if DeAngelo makes a concerted effort to get his life back on the rails, and be far less combative with teammates, it could work out. He isn’t required to abandon his political ideology, but he can’t get crazy about it. Just play hockey to the best of your abilities.

Don’t think Rod the bod would allow any shenanigans on his team. Especially after having to deal with some of the fallout from Akeem Akim Aliu

There is one trade coming down the pike today and it’s gonna be a boomer.
I’ve also never heard of teammates fighting before. LOL. Thought you could use a good laugh.

Between Holland, Francis, Hextall, Waddell, Drury, McCrimmon, this is the off season of just terrible general managing.

Even if Nedeljkovic is a one hit wonder, that’s the level of goaltending they need to replace to move forward instead of back.

And now you are replacing Hamilton and Bean with a cat on his sixth life? OK.

Ohhh this must bother the hell out if you!!!! Lmao I love it! Tony D on his 6th life you say? This kid is only 25, didn’t commit any crime, no domestics, most of the crap written about him was later discovered to be fake news and came from liberal rag writers such as stealing Miller puck, sucker punching the back up goalie, or even the racist comments he supposedly made while in Arizona! All lies! But you wanted him banned anyway? Politics and cancel culture destroy lives but this kid has 6 you say? For whom the bell tolls is crying

I’ve never referenced his politics, only the 4 or more incidents that caused teams to dump this clown.

“Mom, I did it, I single handedly saved Tony DeAngelo from being cancelled by the rag writers!!!!”

Hey, don’t leave Poile off that infamous list! :D

If anyone can keep a disruptive player in check, Rod the bod is that person. But for anyone who remembers Waddell’s teams in Atlanta, the Canes are taking on a similar persona of being a nasty, edgy type of team. That can be good to a point, but can work against you as well.

You’ve referenced politics on here time and again. You have been discreet with him but your lack of transparency regarding your far left liberal ideology is so well known. I love the fact that Tony D has this much interest. I hope he stays off Twitter and grows up but I’m happy the cancel culture didn’t take his career away. I hope this is a lesson for people like you. Never judge someone when you truly do not know the facts or the person themselves. People mess up and grow up. I’m sure you haven’t based on the crap you post. Maybe one day you will become a man and not type crap about someone behind the comfort of the iPad your mom purchased for you.

That’s more like speculation @fwjbt…personally it seems he has been unable to get along with teammates it seems every where he’s gone. I don’t think that’s fake news, I think he has a serious ego problem. So as much as I hate cancel culture, @bballz, I don’t think that’s the issue here. I knew there would be interest in him he’s too good of a hockey player to pass on… but if he continues to constantly be a cancer he will run out of chances plain and simple.

Great signing. All you woke idiots can whine your nonsense all you want. The guy has been immature but as a Rangers fan I will miss the dynamics he had offensively. He is great for the community with youth hockey camps, they tried to call him a racist and the agent of our only black player said his client has never had a crossed word with him, Marc Staal who was a vet and leader AND pairing with DeAngelo vouched for his overall intentions and play. Carolina hasn’t replaced Dougie Hamilton by any means and nowhere did they claim they have but they ado add a potential power play quarterback on their team. Fuck his political opinions. Best of all Carolina has a coach who can hone this guy’s talents while keeping his maturity in check. Good signing

They are negative snowflakes that look for every opportunity to cry and whine. Here’s to hoping Tony D had a great season and he stats off Twitter and just plays hockey. Don’t give these snowflakes something to whine about.

Actually, the MAGA cementheads can go stuff their heads in a toilet. I have no idea what DeAngelo’s political leanings are. I really don’t CARE what his political leanings are. What I DO know is that he’s been suspended for being a jerk everywhere he’s ever played, often more than once, and he’s pure toxic in the locker room. More than one team now has said they want nothing more to do with him, and anyone who claims that NHL executives are a “woke” lot need to smoke a lot less whacky weed and wake up.

I realize that “owning the libs” is a cementhead way of life these days, and the redhatters will gleefully shoot themselves in the foot if they can do it (seriously, cheering for RUSSIA??), but get a clue here. This isn’t about politics. This is about a guy with not only a proven record of messing up locker rooms, but an INVARIABLE record of it.

Did he beat his girlfriend or wife and come back? What did he do other than argue with the back up goalie and get sucker punched by the back up goalie. What did he do for a team to he questioned why they would sign him?

Well there’s the hazing in junior, being a terrible teammate in NY, and seemingly being ran out of what is now three NHL teams, all while being a bad defenceman. That’s quite the start for the jabrone.

Because he’s been regarded as a terrible teammate from multiple teams now. Doesn’t mean he can’t change and he might see this as a wakeup call. Talent only gets you so far. At some point you have to have some personality skills and develop some sort of chemistry with your teammates.

Also not trying to say he did any of this, but if DeAngelo was doing things that might be regarded as “immature” by most people, even more of a reason to give him a wakeup call. This is the big leagues. It’s a job. And you’re working/interacting with grown men (and women) on an everyday basis. This isn’t supposed to be a college frat house.

One-year for one million, certainly dispells the lies about there being “A lot of interest!!!!!… Tony has a ton of interest.” This seems to be his last chance in the NHL. What is the realistic over/under on number of games he plays next year? He might not be able to help himself and have the whole locker room hate him before the end of preseason, or he could play 82 games and score 80+ points. My money is on something in the middle, with him in the KHL by the end of 2022.

Good signing by the Canes. If he plays the way he’s capable of and gets along with his teammates, they get a steal of a signing. If he does just the opposite, then you waive a 1M player. No real downside to this.
