Bruins Executive John Ferguson Jr. Interviewed For Florida Panthers GM

August 27, 2020 at 8:31 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 4 Comments

With the 2020 NHL Draft scheduled for just over a month from now on October 9-10 and an abbreviated (read: frenzied) off-season beginning soon after, the Florida Panthers are still without anyone at the helm. The club fired general manager Dale Tallon back on August 10 after a decade on the job. At the time, the club stated that a search for his replacement had already begun. Yet, it has been all quiet out of Sunrise in the weeks since.

With the clock ticking, there has finally been some development in the story. On Monday, it was reported that at least three people had interviewed for the GM vacancy: St. Louis Blues Assistant GM Bill Armstrong, Montreal Canadiens scout Sean Burke, and NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes. There have been other names associated with the opening as well, but no one else had been confirmed to have been interviewed.

Now you can add one more name to the list. New England hockey insider Mark Divver reports that Boston Bruins Executive Director of Player Personnel John Ferguson Jr. has interviewed for the position.  An executive for the Bruins since 2016, including serving as the GM of the AHL’s Providence Bruins, Ferguson is probably best remembered as the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2003-2008. Among many moves, Ferguson was responsible for drafting and trading Tuukka Rask, acquiring veteran Hall of Famers Ron Francis and Brian Leetch, and signing core defensemen Tomas Kaberle and Bryan McCabe to long-term extensions.

While the Bruins likely wouldn’t be thrilled with a top executive heading to a division rival, Ferguson would be a great hire for the Panthers if they choose to go in that direction. Since Ferguson’s hire, the Bruins have been one of the league’s most elite, with the third-most regular season wins and second-most postseason wins over his four seasons. Florida has one playoff win and the 21st most regular season wins in that time span. The Panthers also have not won a playoff series since 1996, the worst drought in the NHL. The second-worst drought? The Maple Leafs, who have not taken a series since Ferguson left the organization. Ferguson has experience and has contributed to several winning NHL clubs, making him a good fit for a Panthers team in need of a turnaround and some prolonged success.

NHL, NHLPA Postpone Four Games

August 27, 2020 at 5:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee

NHL players on all eight playoff teams have decided not to play tonight or tomorrow, forcing the NHL to postpone each of the four scheduled games. The decision was made following yesterday’s boycott by several other professional sports. The league and NHLPA released a joint statement:

Black and Brown communities continue to face real, painful experiences. The NHL and NHLPA recognize that much work remains to be done before we can play an appropriate role in a discussion centered on diversity, inclusion and social justice.

We understand that the tragedies involving Jacob Blake, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others require us to recognize this moment. We pledge to work to use our sport to influence positive change in society.

The NHLPA and NHL are committed to working to foster more inclusive and welcoming environments within our arenas, offices and beyond.

According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, over 100 players had a call this afternoon to discuss the issues with Evander Kane and Matt Dumba, two members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, following the group’s request earlier today for the league to postpone games. Many of those involved made sure to point out on social media that this was a decision the players made, not the league. Larry Brooks of the New York Post has been told it was the Vancouver Canucks in particular who were the “driving force” among the players.

Each of the eight teams will have a game postponed and there will be no NHL hockey played tonight or tomorrow. Those games originally scheduled will now be played starting on Saturday and the remainder of the second round will be adjusted accordingly. No specifics have been released on the adjusted schedule.

Yesterday, the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA started a wave of boycotts by not appearing on the court for their playoff game against the Orlando Magic. The Milwaukee Brewers and several other MLB teams followed suit, along with teams from the WNBA and athletes from professional tennis. Several NFL football teams canceled practice today and more MLB teams refused to play.

The protests and postponements across the sporting world stem from a desire to raise awareness of social and racial injustices, enact change, and come in response to the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year old Black man, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The Hockey Diversity Alliance was formed this June and asked the NHL to sign the HDA Pledge which:

…includes commitments to funding grassroots programs for BIPOC youth, funding impactful social justice initiatives, anti-racism education, targets for hiring and promoting Black individuals and businesses, and rule changes to make the culture of the game more inclusive.

Rick Westhead of TSN tweets a list of requests included in the pledge, stretching from using empty NHL rinks as polling stations for the upcoming United States elections to specific goals for hiring practices among NHL organizations.

Minor Transactions: 08/27/20

August 27, 2020 at 3:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Minor, junior and European leagues continue to prepare for the 2020-21 season with signings, trades and loans. As always, we’ll keep track of the notable transactions right here:

  • Andrew Nielsen, whose NHL contract with the Calgary Flames will expire at the end of this season, has decided to take his talents overseas for next year. The 23-year old defenseman has signed in Austria, though the Flames could retain his rights by issuing him a qualifying offer. Nielsen arrived in Calgary via a 2018 trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who had selected him 65th overall in the 2015 draft. Nielsen was part of the 2018 Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies, but hasn’t seen a single game in the NHL.
  • Andrew DeBrincat, the older brother of Chicago Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat is on the move in the ECHL, part of a three-way trade between the Kansas City Mavericks, Cincinnati Cyclones and Worcester Railers. The older DeBrincat, who has never played above the ECHL, will play for the Railers this season.
  • 2008 third-round pick Mathieu Brodeur has returned to the ECHL for the 2020-21 season, inking a one-year deal with the Adirondack Thunder. Brodeur has spent time playing in France and Slovakia the past two seasons but has extensive experience in both the AHL and lower minors. Like Nielsen, he has never reached the NHL.

NHL, Players Discussing Postponement Of Games

August 27, 2020 at 1:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee

1:40pm: Eric Engels of Sportsnet reports that not only will today’s games be postponed, but Friday’s games are also not going to be played. An official statement from the league has still yet to come.

12:48pm: According to several reports including Darren Dreger of TSN and insider John Shannon, players and the NHL are discussing whether or not to postpone both games scheduled for today following yesterday’s boycott by several other professional sports. Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that at least one team has voted not to play.

The Hockey Diversity Alliance, headed by NHL players like Evander Kane and Matt Dumba, formally requested the NHL to suspend the games as they felt it “sends a clear message that human rights take priority over sports.”

Several NFL football teams canceled practice today.

The NHL planned a “moment of reflection” before yesterday’s games, though notably it was not held prior to the Dallas Stars-Colorado Avalanche match.

The protests and postponements across the sporting world stem from a desire to raise awareness of social and racial injustices, enact change, and come in response to the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year old Black man, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

It is not clear yet when the games will be played if postponed or if Friday’s games will continue as scheduled.

Dan Muse, Adam Nightingale Named NTDP Head Coaches

August 27, 2020 at 1:16 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Over the last few weeks USA Hockey had lost several coaches from their National Team Development Program to other positions in the hockey world, but today they’ve found some replacements. Dan Muse and Adam Nightingale have been named head coaches of the NTDP, heading up the U18 and U17 teams respectively.

Muse has served as an assistant coach for the Nashville Predators for the past three seasons after previously working as the head coach of the Chicago Steel of the USHL. Twice he was a video coach with USA Hockey at the U20 World Juniors and has plenty of experience as an assistant with Yale in the NCAA as well.

He’ll be joined by assistants Dan Hinote and Mike Leone behind the bench of the U18 team.

Nightingale meanwhile has worked with the Detroit Red Wings for the last several seasons, first as a video coach and then an assistant in 2019-20. He’s served as video coach for USA Hockey’s World Championship squad the last three years and was previously the Director of Hockey Operations at Michigan State University.

He’ll be joined by assistants Nick Fohr and Brent Darnell behind the bench of the U17 team.

Seth Appert and John Wroblewski, who previously held the positions, both took head coaching jobs in the AHL this summer.

David Gustafsson Loaned To Allsvenskan

August 27, 2020 at 11:12 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Among the players being loaned out to European leagues, it’s no longer only prospects that are years away from making an NHL impact. Now teams are starting to find landing spots for young players who have a good shot at making the roster when the 2020-21 season starts too. David Gustafsson, who played 22 games with the Winnipeg Jets this season, has been loaned to Tingsryds AIF of Sweden’s Allsvenskan (second tier).

Gustafsson, 20, scored his first NHL goal with the Jets but was held scoreless otherwise and managed just seven points in 13 AHL contests. Still, he’s a big part of their future after being selected 60th overall in 2018 and making an impact at the SHL level.

This move is a bit curious, given he’s already competed and succeeded at the highest level in Sweden, but it will certainly give Gustafsson a chance to build on his game and get some confidence coming into NHL training camp. The Jets release specifically states that the young forward will return when the 2020-21 season begins in North America.

Nick Merkley Signs In Finland

August 27, 2020 at 10:49 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

One of the players that the New Jersey Devils received in exchange for Taylor Hall was Nick Merkley, a 23-year old forward originally drafted in the first round by the Arizona Coyotes. Merkley ended up playing 28 games for the Devils’ minor league affiliate and four games in the NHL, but will now be playing overseas for the next few months.

Merkley has signed a one-year contract with Assat of the Finnish Liiga, though the deal does have an NHL out-clause that runs through mid-December. The young forward’s entry-level contract is coming to an end in the NHL and he will be a restricted free agent, meaning if he comes to an agreement with the Devils he can be back in time for training camp.

Of course, there’s no guarantee the two sides to come to a deal and even if they do, the uncertainty surrounding the 2020-21 AHL season will be something to consider. If New Jersey wasn’t planning on using Merkley at the NHL level, perhaps they will allow him to play and develop in Finland this season.

The 30th-overall selection in 2015, Merkley has just five NHL games under his belt to this point. He has performed well enough at the AHL level, but still hasn’t quite been that dominant offensive presence that scored 117 points in his draft year or even the one that had 18 goals and 39 points in just 38 games as a minor league rookie.

Martin Hanzal Founds Czech Team, Recruits Several Retired NHLers

August 26, 2020 at 7:33 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 7 Comments

In a fun and interesting story out of the Czech Republic, NHL veteran Martin Hanzal is back in action and bringing a number of notable names with him. According to Czech hockey source Hokej.cz, Hanzal and brother Jiri Hanzal have founded a team, HC Samson Ceske Budejovice, in the Czech semi-pro “regional league”. Hanzal, 33, is technically still under contract with the Dallas Stars until the end of the league year but did not play this season due to injury and was limited to just seven games in 2018-19 and 38 games in 2017-18. He was not expected to continue his NHL career, but will continue playing in his native Czech Republic.

Joining Hanzal are several of his countrymen and former NHL teammates. Forwards Radim Vrbata and Vaclav Nedorost and defenseman Rostislav Klesla have also opted to come out of retirement to play for the newfound franchise. Vrbata, 39, is just a few years removed from a 20-goal, 55-point campaign with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016-17 and played for the Florida Panthers the following season before retiring. Vrbata played 16 NHL seasons and over 1000 NHL games for seven different teams. Klesla, 38, played 13 seasons in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Arizona Coyotes, moving back to the Czech Republic in 2014. Klesla retired in 2016, making his return the most surprising of the bunch. However, Klesla played with Hanzal and Vrbata in Phoenix, so the group are likely close. Nederost, 38, was last seen in the NHL in 2003-04 and played three seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers. He spent most of his career starring in the Czech Extraliga and KHL and just retired in 2019. Together with Hanzal, the group has over 2800 games of NHL experience, which should help to draw new fans to the team.

Another interesting note about the roster is that, in addition to Hanzal’s brother, Nederost’s brother is also on the roster, as are two other sets of brothers. The entire roster is composed of Czech natives and all but two players are age 30 or older, so in many ways this team is just as much for the fun of the many veteran Czech players as it is for the fans, who can see their favorites back in action. Due to the nature of the roster composition as well as the talent level of the regional semi-pro league, do not expect Hanzal to use this experience to potentially work his way back to the NHL, but it is nice to see a player who has lost so much time due to injury to get back on the ice and enjoy the game once again.

Minor Transactions: 08/26/20

August 26, 2020 at 3:42 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Things kick off today with some afternoon hockey between the New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers, before a pair of later games this evening. For more than half the league though, plans are being formulated for the 2020-21 season instead (whenever that starts). Minor, junior, and European leagues are also planning their next steps and like always we’ll keep track of those minor moves right here.

  • Ryan Jones has signed with the Rochester Americans after failing to reach an agreement with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 24-year old defenseman became a free agent earlier this month after four years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and will instead join the AHL organization to start his professional career.
  • The San Jose Sharks have loaned Josef Korenar to HC Ocelari to start the season, letting him get some game action in the Czech Republic while they wait for the AHL. Korenar posted an .891 save percentage in 33 games this season for the San Jose Barracuda, his second season in North American pro hockey.
  • The OHL’s Oshawa Generals have landed a future NHL prospect in a trade with the Erie Otters. Forward Hayden Fowler, expected to be a mid-round pick in the upcoming 2020 NHL Draft, was acquired by Oshawa for a trio of high picks, the team announced. Fowler, an OHL first-rounder in 2017, recorded 42 points in 52 games this season.
  • Former New York Islanders prospect Kirill Petrov won’t be attempting a North American comeback any time soon. Petrov, now 30, was a 2008 selection of the Isles whose stint with the club lasted just 13 AHL games in 2015-16. Yet, in the four seasons since he returned to the KHL, he has put up strong numbers year after year. However, rather than try his hand at the top level, Petrov has signed a two-year extension with Ak Bars Kazan, the team reports.
