Montreal Canadiens Send Matthew Peca To Ottawa Senators

The Montreal Canadiens announced they have sent forward Matthew Peca to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2020 seventh-round pick and forward Aaron Luchuk.

On the surface, it’s a very minor deal as the Canadiens only receive seventh-rounder and a prospect who has spent most of his time in the ECHL. However, with the Senators having traded away two players in Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Vladislav Namestnikov earier this morning, the team has lost two roster players. The team is likely to call on some of their young talent currently sitting in the AHL. However, Peca can provide help in two areas — either providing a veteran presence for the Senators or, most likely, he will join the Belleville Senators for their upcoming playoff run. Belleville is currently in first place in the North Division as the team hopes to compete for a Calder Cup this season. Peca had four goals and 13 points in 34 games with the Laval Rocket, but has appeared in five games with Montreal.

Luchuk has now been traded twice in a five-day period. Luchuk was originally with the Toronto Maple Leafs and was traded on Feb. 19 with a 2021 sixth-round pick for forward Max Veronneau. Now the 22-year-old goes on to Montreal. He was dominant with the New Foundland Growlers in the ECHL so far this year with 19 goals and 50 points in 45 games. He played three games with the Toronto Marlies, registering no points. His inclusion is likely just to even out the contacts between the two squads.

New York Islanders Pursuing Zach Parise

According to Frank Seravalli of TSN, the New York Islanders are working to acquire Zach Parise from the Minnesota Wild. The Islanders would be sending Andrew Ladd back in a potential deal, though the trade is not complete at this point and there would likely be additional pieces involved. Parise obviously has a link to Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello after playing the first part of his career in New Jersey. Michael Russo of The Athletic tweets that Parise is willing to waive his no-move clause if it does come together.

Boston Bruins Acquire Nick Ritchie

The Boston Bruins are going to try their luck with a different Ritchie brother. The Bruins have acquired Nick Ritchie from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Danton Heinen. Brett Ritchie meanwhile is currently playing for the Providence Bruins.

The new Bruins’ winger will fit right into the culture that Boston has built as a physical, grinding team, but it’s hard to know exactly where his ceiling is at this point. The 24-year old Ritchie was a 10th-overall pick in 2014 but has a career-high of 14 goals to this point. In fact, his eight goals and 19 points this year would look even worse if this trade had happened just a day ago—Ritchie had a career-high four-point game for Anaheim yesterday, scoring twice.

That physical presence may fit better in Buffalo than Heinen, but the Ducks will hope they can get the best out of their talented new forward. The 24-year old Heinen has been a frustratingly-underwhelming presence in the Boston lineup this season, but has a history of success. In 2017-18 as a rookie he scored 16 goals and 47 points, but has gone steadily downhill ever since.

Both players are signed through 2020-21, but Heinen’s $2.8MM cap hit is almost twice the size of Ritchie’s $1.498MM salary. That opens up a bit more room for the Bruins, who also cleared space in the recent Ondrej Kase–David Backes deal with the same team.

Five Players Placed On Pre-Deadline Waivers

Monday: The Anaheim Ducks have claimed Andrew Agozzino off waivers, while the Detroit Red Wings have claimed Dmytro Timashov. The other three have cleared.

Sunday: It will be a loaded waiver wire today, as the list features five different names. Two of those players were on AHL contracts until today, as the New Jersey Devils announced that they have signed defenseman Julian Melchiori to an NHL deal for the rest of the season, while the Ottawa Senators have done the same for defenseman Hubert Labrie. Pittsburgh Penguins forward Andrew Agozzino, Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Dmytro Timashov, and recently-acquired L.A. Kings forward Tim Schaller round out the list. Goaltender Kevin Poulin has cleared waivers after signing with the Kings yesterday.

Melchiori, 28, has 30 NHL games to his credit over three years with the Winnipeg Jets, but has not played at the top level since 2016-17. Nevertheless, he has been a productive member of the AHL’s Binghamton Devils this season and provides New Jersey with another NHL option, given that Sami Vatanen and potentially others could be traded away by tomorrow’s deadline.

Similarly, the 28-year-old Labrie has proven to be a dependable defender and a locker room leader for the AHL’s Belleville Senators this season and has earned the chance to appear with Ottawa down the stretch if needed. Labrie is a career minor-leaguer, but the Senators are without many options given injuries at both levels, the recent departures of Dylan DeMelo and Cody Goloubef, and the potential that names like Ron Hainsey and Mark Borowiecki could still be moved.

The Penguins and Leafs are both in the market for additional help at the deadline and need roster flexibility where they can get it. Although Agozzino is actively in the Pittsburgh starting lineup, the 29-year-old veteran is expendable if it means opening up roster space for the Penguins, who are always active at the trade deadline. Timashov, 23, has played a very limited role in 39 games this season for Toronto and this move signals that the team feels he is worth losing if it avoids other more difficult roster decisions.

Schaller, a salary cap offset in the recent Tyler Toffoli trade, was never expected to play a regular role in Los Angeles. The Kings are well out of the playoff race and focused on working their younger players into the lineup, and the 29-year-old impending free agent is not part of that movement. Schaller has previously shown to be a good bottom-six depth option, and while a claim is unlikely, he could be flipped tomorrow after gaining the extra flexibility of clearing waivers.

Buffalo Sabres To Acquire Wayne Simmonds

The Buffalo Sabres are obviously not giving up on this season just yet. The team is close to acquiring Wayne Simmonds from the New Jersey Devils, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN. The Sabres are expected to send a conditional 2021 fifth-round pick to the Devils in return. Pierre LeBrun and Frank Seravalli of TSN chime in with some details. The pick can become a fourth-round pick if the Sabres make the playoffs and Simmonds plays ten games, while New Jersey will retain 50% of his cap hit through the end of the year.

The Sabres looked like they were completely out of the race a few weeks ago, but after some real struggles from both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers, Buffalo now sits just six points out of a divisional playoff spot with a game in hand.

Whether Simmonds will really be able to help them reach that goal is the question. The power forward has just eight goals and 24 points this season, a pace that would see him tally his lowest goal total since his rookie year. Part of that can be blamed on the hapless situation the Devils are in, but there are more than 900 tough, physical games on Simmonds’ frame at this point and he is obviously slowing down.

Still, an acquisition that costs you almost nothing in terms of draft capital can never really be called a loss. The Sabres will add in Simmonds’ leadership and physicality as a little boost to the stretch, a reward for the way the group has played recently.

Blue Jackets Close To Acquiring Andreas Athanasiou

The Blue Jackets have entered the trade frenzy as they are on the verge of acquiring winger Andreas Athanasiou from the Red Wings, Sportsnet’s Eric Francis reports (Twitter link).  There is no word yet on the return.  The deal doesn’t come as much of a surprise as he was held out of the lineup for their game on Sunday for asset management purposes which is code for a trade being close.

It has been a very strange season for the 25-year-old.  Last year, he had a career-best 30 goals and 24 assists in 76 games and it looked like he was on his way to being part of Detroit’s long-term core.  However, things have gone completely off the rails this season.  He has struggled considerably offensively with only 24 points in 46 games while his plus/minus has been dreadful at -45.  That’s already in the bottom 30 all-time among NHL forwards.

Athanasiou should get a big opportunity with Columbus, a team that has somehow managed to hang in the playoff hunt despite a ridiculously long list of injuries.  At the moment, they’re missing two of their top offensive wingers in Cam Atkinson and Oliver Bjorkstrand, the latter being out for the rest of the regular season.  That should give him an immediate opportunity inside their top six.

Athanasiou is slated to become a restricted free agent this summer with salary arbitration rights.  He’ll be owed a qualifying offer of $3MM, his salary for this season.

Derek Grant Traded To Philadelphia Flyers

Not only did the Philadelphia Flyers add Nate Thompson today, but they’ve also acquired Derek Grant from the Anaheim Ducks according to Frank Seravalli of TSN. The Ducks will receive Kyle Criscuolo and a fourth-round pick in return.

Grant, like Thompson, has been all over the NHL throughout his career. A member of the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins and Ducks (twice), he has 257 career games. This year however has been his best, with 14 goals and 20 points through 49 games.

A big body and even more center depth is exactly what the Flyers were looking for, which Grant brings in spades. The team had been linked to Jeff Carter in the past, but with two additions for their bottom-six already in hand it seems unlikely that the Flyers will go after their former star.

The question will now be whether it even makes a difference for Philadelphia in the brutal Metropolitan Division. The team currently sits in third place with 77 points, but the New York Islanders (76 points), Carolina Hurricanes (74) and Columbus Blue Jackets (74) are all still hot on their heels.

Toronto Trades Hutchinson To Colorado, Re-Acquires Rosen

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have re-acquired a familiar face as the team picked up defenseman Calle Rosen from the Colorado Avalanche, while sending third-string goaltender Michael Hutchinson back.

Rosen, 26, spent the previous two years with the Maple Leafs, mostly with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, but did play eight games with the Leafs between those two seasons. The belief was that he had developed to the point that he was a likely candidate to take over a third-pairing defenseman for Toronto this season. However, instead the Maple Leafs traded him to Colorado during the summer as part of the Nazem Kadri deal that brought in Tyson Barrie and Alex Kerfoot. Rosen has split time with the Avalanche as well, but has primarily stayed in the AHL with the Eagles, where he has three goals and 15 points in 35 games. He has appeared in eight games with the Avalanche with two assists.

As for Hutchinson, the Avalanche needed some depth at the position with the injury to Philipp Grubauer and they got it. The team has been using backup Pavel Francouz as the primary starter, but need a capable backup to fill in as a third-string option. Hutchinson started the season as the Maple Leafs’ backup goaltender, but struggled immensely all season. An injury to Frederik Andersen, only made things worse as the netminder allowed seven goals in his final two appearances before Toronto opted to trade for Jack Campbell and sending Hutchinson to the Marlies. In 15 games, Hutchinson had a 3.66 GAA and a .866 save percentage. He has played better in the AHL in four starts this year, posting a 1.98 GAA and a .943 save percentage.

Igor Shesterkin Out With Rib Fracture

The New York Rangers made a huge move to lock up Chris Kreider today, but they’ll lose one of their other top players for a while. Igor Shesterkin and Pavel Buchnevich were involved in a car accident yesterday, and the goaltender will be out for at least two weeks with a broken rib. Buchnevich is listed as day-to-day.

Given that Shesterkin could miss up to a month with the injury, the Rangers’ goaltending situation is back to normal for the next little while. Henrik Lundqvist and Alexandar Georgiev will assume the duties for now, likely ending any speculation on a deadline deal.

Shesterkin has been outstanding since arriving in the NHL, posting a .940 save percentage through ten appearances. The Rangers will have to obviously play this very carefully as the protect their potential new franchise netminder.

Rangers Sign Chris Kreider To A Seven-Year Extension

While it wasn’t looking likely on Sunday that the Rangers would reach an extension with Chris Kreider, that has changed.  The Rangers announced (Twitter link) that they’ve agreed to a seven-year extension with the winger.  Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman adds (via Twitter) that the deal carries a $6.5MM AAV.

For most of the season, it was believed that extension talks were virtually non-existent but that changed in recent days with the trade deadline fast approaching.  GM Jeff Gorton was still fielding offers throughout the process and evidently decided that a new deal was preferable to whatever the top offer was from elsewhere.

The 28-year-old has spent the entirety of his eight-year career with the Rangers who drafted him 19th overall back in 2009.  He has emerged as one of the better power forwards in the league over that time and is on pace to set new career highs offensively.  This season, he has 24 goals and 21 assists in 60 games while averaging 17:33 per night, the highest average of his career.

The seven-year term certainly carries some risk as players that play a physical style that Kreider does tend to wear down towards the end of their career.  Yesterday, it was believed that New York only wanted to go six years but they have relented on that desire.  On the other hand, it ensures that his prime years will be spent in New York where he will continue to be part of their core.  The deal represents a nice raise on his current $4.625MM AAV.

GM Jeff Gorton will soon need to free up some cap space for next season and beyond.  The Rangers now have more than $72MM tied up in 16 players for next season with Ryan Strome, Anthony DeAngelo, Alexandar Georgiev, and Brendan Lemieux all restricted free agents next summer.  That means there is likely more movement to come by next season but the cap-clearing move may have to come over the offseason.
