Dylan Ferguson

Ottawa Senators Sign Dylan Ferguson

March 2, 2023 at 1:11 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Ottawa Senators have added some goaltending depth for the rest of the year, signing Dylan Ferguson to a one-year, two-way contract through 2022-23. The deal follows the recent AHL acquisition of Ferguson, and sets him up to be a restricted free agent in the summer.

Despite being a seventh-round pick of the Dallas Stars who wasn’t tendered a contract after his entry-level deal expired, the 24-year-old Ferguson has actually appeared in the NHL before. That came way back in 2017-18, when he was an emergency recall directly from the WHL to play for the Vegas Golden Knights as they dealt with several injuries.

He hasn’t returned in the years since, but after posting a .930 save percentage through his first two appearances for the Bellville Senators, you can understand why the organization wanted to keep him around. After the stretch run, Ottawa will get to decide whether tendering him is worth it.

In the meantime, he’s now eligible for recall to the NHL should they need a backup.

Snapshots: Capitals, Marchand, Ferguson

February 24, 2023 at 5:30 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

Anything you can do, I can do better. After a report emerged earlier today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have shown interest in Jakob Chychrun, rival Washington Capitals have also now been linked to the Arizona Coyotes defenseman. Darren Dreger of TSN reports that the Capitals are hoping to “rebuild on the fly” and, after yesterday’s trade of Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway, now have the assets to pull it off if it gets that far.

The Penguins and Capitals are in similar situations, trying to contend as many times as possible while their franchise icons are still on the ice. Neither one is guaranteed to make the playoffs this season, meaning it will be quite the task to retool quickly enough to challenge for the Stanley Cup. In the meantime, the Capitals have recalled Aliaksei Protas from the minor leagues to fill the last vacated roster spot.

  • Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has been issued a fine for the dangerous trip of Seattle Kraken forward Oliver Bjorkstrand. Marchand owes $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for the incident in last night’s game. The Bruins are lucky, as every time Marchand is the focus of the Department of Player Safety, it could end in a suspension given his long history of supplementary discipline.
  • With the Belleville Senators dealing with several injuries to their goaltenders, they’ve acquired some extra depth. Dylan Ferguson is on his way over from the Toronto Marlies in exchange for future considerations in a minor league deal. The 24-year-old netminder, perhaps best known for his emergency appearance for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, when he was still playing in the WHL, has appeared just five times for the Marlies this year, posting an .888 save percentage.

Dylan Ferguson Signs Professional Tryout

October 11, 2022 at 2:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

Oct 11: Two months later, Ferguson’s time in Toronto isn’t over yet. The netminder has signed an AHL PTO to remain with the Toronto Marlies for the time being.

Aug 10: In the Vegas Golden Knights first season, some will remember a short period when every goaltender in the system was injured or unavailable at the same time. Marc-Andre Fleury, Malcolm Subban, and Oscar Dansk all hit injured reserve together, meaning the team had just Maxime Lagace to play. In came Dylan Ferguson, a junior hockey netminder who was only a few months removed from being drafted in the seventh round. He was supposed to only serve as the backup but ended up on the ice in a game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Ferguson stopped one of two shots he faced during his nine-minute stint, and then returned to junior where he re-joined his Kamloops Blazers for the rest of that season, and another. His entry-level contract continued to slide but after three seasons bouncing around the minor leagues, the Golden Knights decided not to issue Ferguson a qualifying offer this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Now, he has signed a professional tryout with the Toronto Maple Leafs according to CapFriendly, as he tries to earn a new deal and get his career back on track. In 13 appearances with the Henderson Silver Knights last season, Ferguson posted a .907 save percentage.

Choosing the Maple Leafs is an interesting path, given how full their goaltending system is at the moment. The team has Ilya Samsonov and Matt Murray at the NHL level, Erik Kallgren and Joseph Woll at the AHL level, and college standouts Keith Petruzzelli and Dryden McKay signed to AHL contracts. Hard to see where Ferguson would fit in, unless someone suffers an injury during camp, but it is important to remember that PTOs aren’t necessarily only to showcase a player’s skill for the team they sign with.

Often, it is to make sure they are in camp with someone, so that they can try to catch the eye of a team in the league. If Ferguson wants an NHL deal, he’ll get the chance to prove it in Toronto.
