The Utah Hockey Club has finally revealed their long-anticipated team name. For the 2025-26 season and onwards, they will be known as the Utah Mammoth, with a logo depicting the Wasatch Mountain range in the head of the Mammoth and a tusk that will also be used in other branding and logos. The club’s search for a team name involved a 13-month process and 850K fan votes, per ESPN.
Utah owners Ryan and Ashley Smith shared their excitement for the new name in an NHL.com press release. They shared, “When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented – going through four rounds of community voting, including getting feedback not only on potential names but also on potential logos. We love the passion of the people of Utah and the way they showed up for the team during its inaugural season and the energy they brought to voting on its permanent identity.” The Smith family will stay dedicated to bolstering the presence of Utah hockey throughout the summer, with plans to both renovate the Mammoth’s home arena, Delta Center, as well as hopes of building new ice rinks across the state of Utah.
Utah will maintain the same colors they rolled out in their inaugural season – Rock Black, Salt White, and Mountain Blue. They will also maintain the same Away jerseys, with ’Utah’ depicted across the chest in bold font. The home jerseys will have the same striping and details as the inaugural set, though they’ll now depict the Mammoth logo, as well as new secondary logos for each shoulder patch. Apparel and accessories with the Mammoth logo will go live at Noon M.T., or 2 P.M. E.T., on Wednesday.
Still feels like a Kraken rip-off, but it was better than most of the other options.
@DarkSide830 — Pretty much my thoughts, too. First, they either were unaware or didn’t care that there is already a Mammoth Lacrosse team. Second was the Azzkrapen color scheme, although the design is decent enough. At least they didn’t go with Yeti.
The jerseys look like a Kraken ripoff fr tho
Yeah luckily they couldn’t legally use yeti. That was bad. The color scheme is uninspiring and the away uniform will stay too plain, but it’s probably the best of the crappy options they had
Did the Yeti’s sign a petition and threaten to sue? I’ll wait.
Haha. Yeti coolers wouldn’t sign a release
I think it was because of the Avalanche shoulder patch being a Sasquatch foot
This is correct — it was the cooler company who blocked the Yeti name.
A cooler company hires Yeti’s to work there? Does the Orange Blowhole know about this? Were they born here? I’ll keep waiting.
They got Bigfoot papers so they could be hired domestically.
As long as it’s documented. Thanks Tang. LOL
I love it. Not sure I love the singular, but we also have a league where the “Leafs” exist so like. I’m not even arsed.
I used to wonder the same thing, but I learned that “Leafs” is considered a proper noun, therefore, it merely adds an ‘s’ to make it plural, as opposed to it being “Leaves”
Much, much better than the other names offered. And now the Preds have another exticnt ice age animal to do battle with, lol!
@Gbear — Now the pressure’s on one team to play like they’re not extinct. :)
@Mac – Well, one is rising out of the ice while the other is sinking deeper into it. You can guess which is which. :/
The name is bad. All of their choices were bad.
Logo is pretty solid, but it’s a rip off of the Peca era Sabres logo.
Colors are nice, but they are also nice on Winnipeg and the Pens’ Winter Classic thirds before them.
Yeti was better, but alas couldn’t get the trademark.
Any fans of the indoor lax team in Denver should be happy since they can now double dip on sports paraphernalia investments.
They named the team after a rock band? Good music, but seriously WTH
I think you are confusing them with Mastodon…
No confusion. There is a very popular rock band right now called Mammoth. Fronted by Eddie Van Halen’s son, the band was named as a tribute to his dad as Mammoth was also the original name of Van Halen before they made it big.
There are modern rock bands? Based on the radio, you would think no new rock songs have been written since the grunge era…
After 2 years that’s what they came up with? You need to fire the whole PR department. That’s bad. Hockey Club was better.
Nah, leave the “Club” names in Europe. Although Yeti was def the best choice
The whole process was flawed from the start.
Ah so slow and clumsy? Sounds fitting for this Arizona/utah dumpster fire!
Actually, they’re building a pretty solid club. Cynicism about a name is okay, but give credit where it’s due, Utah is on the cusp and they’re doing it the right way. Finally.
I felt a bit torn about posting it because they look like they could have a strong club moving forward but I still have my doubts. There’s no real superstar. Goaltending is not consistent and I’ve seen countless highly touted PHX/ARI prospects flounder in their system. I am rooting for them I just wanted to make a joke haha. But I agree they could be a decent club moving forward.
I hate/love how the internet is all about complaining from behind a keyboard. No matter what the name, the same people would be complaining.
Spot on. One of the reasons that this site is so much fun! A good number of the chronic complainers that infest this site seem to sit on the edge of their sofas waiting for another opportunity to whine and complain about something, anything, while providing excellent entertainment in return. You can look at a headline and often predict which of the locals will be in the comments and what their beef will be. Hockey is a fun game yet it seems to keep a bunch of these folks in a state of constant misery. Again, good stuff!
Can’t say I like the logo though. Gotta be honest. That over-simplified comic book style logo is so overdone at this point. It looks tacky and out-dated.
Horrible name
Logo looks way too similar to the Buffaslug – not very original. The name and color scheme are… perfectly cromulent?
Overall the branding feels safe, uninspiring, and doesn’t stand out. Corporate risk-aversion is in everything these days, I guess.
+2 for using the words “perfectly cromulent”. I tip my cap to you.
Not crazy about the name of “Mammoth” at all (it’s quite lame IMO) nor did I like “Yeti” at all either. What is with the extinct & mythical team name choices in the NHL?…It’s rather cheesy quite honestly. Of the final 3 choices they had, I would have taken “Outlaws” instead IMO. You at least then have a tough guy persona name rather than a word that stands for immensely large (adj.) or an extinct elephant-like mammal (noun). It’s their team, so it is what it is.
I also liked Outlaws
I did too. However, I’m also a bit of a WHA historian and when I heard the potential name Outlaw I immediately thought of the Calgary Cowboys logo. And my sick mind would absolutely love for an NHL team to use that.
I liked Utah Mountain Mormons and Utah Polygamy
Utah Coyotes would’ve been better
They had to keep it in Arizona for the resurrected team that will never come. My daughter asked if they could just make it Sand Doggies…
I was expecting the Utah McJesuses
Utah Sundancers… wait.
Just rolls of the tongue
pretty lame. nicknames without an s at the end are for soccer and women’s sports….and this comes from someone in Minnesota who refuses to go to a wild game due their name and uniform. long live the North Stars.
will always and forever be the utah hockey club .. an original 32
