Snaphots: Zegras, Lajoie, Timmins

February 27, 2024 at 8:30 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 16 Comments

In a report from Eric Stephens of The Athletic, Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras has been off crutches for about a week and can return to the ice in a week or two. If the predicted time of his return is accurate, the Ducks may have a potential trade chip available for the March 8th trade deadline.

Over the last few months, Zegras has been mentioned in some trade rumors, especially after Anaheim parted ways with Jamie Drysdale earlier in January. Still, at only 22 years old, Zegras represents a viable second-line center option for many contending teams, as well as a potential long-term fit with a handful of rebuilding teams.

Outside of this season, Zegras has typically maintained a clean bill of health, averaging over 75 games in his first two full-time seasons in the NHL. Over four years with the Ducks, Zegras has played in a total of 200 games in Anaheim, scoring a total of 53 goals and 146 points in the process.

Other notes:

  • Per a team announcement, the Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled defenseman Maxime Lajoie from their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Primarily used as a depth defenseman in Toronto’s system this year, Lajoie has only played in seven games for the Maple Leafs this season, tallying one assist in total. With the Marlies this season, Lajoie has been much more productive, scoring two goals and 17 points in 31 games played.
  • Sticking in Toronto, TSN’s Mark Masters reported that Maple Leafs defenseman Conor Timmins is not quite cleared for contact yet, but can begin skating again. According to the report, Timmins is dealing with an internal injury, which has kept him from playing since January 24th. In the games that Timmins has been able to play in, he has scored one goal and six points from Toronto’s blue line.

Guentzel for Zegras and then ANH can flip Guentzel for a package of pieces.

Sid with Zegras would be absurd.

Zegras thus far is a pedestrian pretty boy who is more concerned with trending on social media than he is being a solid pro.

      Thus far.

      22 year olds often mature.

I wonder if playing with the most dedicated and professional player of his era (maybe ever) would help Zegras become a more solid pro…

      As skilled as it gets.

He could be a first good add in the Pittsburgh rebuild which is long over due.

Crosby has not been the most professional player of his era. He had such a rep of being a whiney crybaby that he was nicknamed Sidney Crysby. I’ll give you dedicated, skilled and team leader. But most professional is definately a stretch.

I mean obv this would be a great move for the Pens but it seems like very wishful thinking.

Will Zegras fetch more than the Guentzel package? Not sure he would, actually.

      Right.

      Given that nickname by whom?

@66TheNumberOfTheBest — Given by the dreaded cross-state rivals, as I remember.

Correct. Not giving Flyers’ fans a heckler’s veto over reality.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of a more solid pro than Sid in any sport.

He makes 66 and 68 seem like slacker nihilists in comparison and those are 3 of the top 5 ever.

Considering Giroux once needed surgery on his wrists because Crosby kept hitting his wrists with his stick on faceoffs I would hold off calling him some true well mannered professional.

Given that nickname by the rest of the league, not just Flyers fans. I could care less about the battle of Pennsylvania and either team. But 10 years ago I was calling him Crysby too. The guy complained to the refs whenever a play didn’t go how he wanted.

Right. He’s the captain of the team.

And, what exactly is the counterargument here, that if Zegras found a time machine and went back to 23 year old Sid (already a Cup champ, BTW) that Sid might not be as good an influence as the current Sid (possibly the most professional athlete in any sport ever)?

      OK.

Zegras is so far more style then substance. If he stays in Anaheim. he going to be a winger. Mctavish Carlsson are superior players already.

Zegras isn’t getting traded. The speculation is moronic.

I don’t see Zegras getting traded this season, Value is at the lowest its been in four years. Maybe in the offseason, if he returns to form.
