Zach Senyshyn Requests Trade

December 22, 2021 at 4:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 14 Comments

The third member of the Boston Bruins’ infamous 2015 first-round trio, Zach Senyshyn is also the one with the fewest NHL games played. He’s played just 14 times at that level, recording a goal and three points. For the Providence Bruins, he’s been a strong contributor, wearing an “A” as an alternate captain the last two seasons and registering 92 points in 213 games. But now he wants out.

Speaking with Mark Divver of Rinkside Rhode Island, Senyshyn explained that he has requested a trade out of the Bruins organization. To be clear, he said that he will report back to Providence after the holiday break, but believes it would be best for both sides for him to get a fresh start.

Selected 15th overall, Senyshyn was the third-straight Bruins pick in the first round. Jakub Zboril and Jake DeBrusk were the other two, both players who have also at one point in their careers requested a trade out of Boston. While all three have been disappointments relative to their draft position, the picks were considered all the worse thanks to the three players that came directly after them. Mathew Barzal, Kyle Connor, and Thomas Chabot were picked 16, 17, and 18. Senyshyn even touches on that specifically in his interview with Divver, which is understandable given that every media outlet (this one included) seems to mention the draft outcomes when he’s discussed.

In 21 games this season, the 24-year-old forward has 13 points with Providence and is tied with Oskar Steen or the team lead in goals with eight. He agreed to a new one-year, two-way contract in the offseason that normally would have left him a restricted free agent again, but, like Zboril, Senyshyn will become a Group VI unrestricted free agent should he fail to reach 80 NHL games by the end of the year. With 66 needed to hit that threshold, he’s not going to make it even if a trade went through in the coming days, meaning one way or another he’ll get a chance at his fresh start soon enough.

The best part about that draft was that they decided they needed a LHD, scouted the Saint John Seadogs, and determined Zboril was the pick over Chabot.

Zboril isn’t the bad pick of the group to be fair. He at least was a top 15 ranked player going into the draft.

They could trade him and DeBrusk together and still couldn’t get a bag of pucks but then again we will never know if this kid is any good because instead of giving these young kids any ice time they sign useless players on the 4th line

Senyshyn has had work ethic issues. He was a healthy scratch in the past and his coach specifically cited his lack of effort for the reason he was scratched. I’ve seen him play several times with Providence & he isn’t noticeable at all. He was never anywhere close to a first round pick & has struggled to deal with first round expectations. Senyshyn isn’t going to be a top 6 player no matter where he goes. Maybe a change of scenery can wake him up enough to crack an NHL lineup.

Senyshyn’s flopped every sparse chance he got, and only in the last two seasons has he performed beyond third-pairing minutes in Providence … playing in 18 and 21 games respectively. The only reason he’d be worth more than a seventh round pick is in this COVID-ravaged year, where guys like him actually get emergency recall time. And the Bruins have no incentive to do that and lose face in the ensuing “See, they dumped a first rounder for GARBAGE” headlines.

Nah, they’ll let the string run out, and he can walk as a free agent, and that’ll be that.

Ya but with the way the Bruins played these guys they probably would do it to those guys a lot of the time it the organization not the player they could’ve come here and sucked but who knows Boston’s a mess and going to be for awhile now

Add the current mess at goalie, it’s apparent to Bruins fans that Sweeney is a failed GM.

Went back over Bob McKenzie’s rankings and if he was your GM you would have had Barzal, Connor and Zboril. I don’t mind playing the what if game, but ground it a bit in what people thought at the time.

Celtics and Bruins have botched so many draft picks recently.

He passed through waivers unclaimed. Anyone could’ve claimed him for free. No one will trade for him.

Also, he has only one NHL goal in 14 games and it was an empty net goal.
