Edmonton Oilers Claim Colby Cave

January 15, 2019 at 11:04 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

The Boston Bruins thought they could slide Colby Cave through waivers this week, but with the Edmonton Oilers looking for any sort of forward help it wasn’t to be so. The Oilers have claimed Cave, meaning he will join their NHL group and likely get another chance to establish himself at the highest level.

It’s not the first time this season that the Oilers have taken a stab at a young forward on waivers, given their dramatic need for help in the bottom half of their lineup. Cave played 20 games with the Bruins this season and actually impressed many with his unending work ethic and two-way ability. The 24-year old recorded five points in those games but has also dominated the AHL level this year with 18 points in 15 contests for the Providence Bruins. There’s little reason to believe he can become a top-six forward for Edmonton, but they’ve struggled so much to create any offense outside of their top few players that even a professional fourth-liner may be an upgrade.

The Oilers have just four forwards with at least five goals this season—not counting Drake Caggiula who recorded seven before being traded away—and amazingly fewer with even 25 points. Jujhar Kaira’s 13 points puts him fifth among all forwards, a production level that is not possible for a team expecting to challenge for the Stanley Cup. Cave should immediately challenge for a full-time role in Edmonton, and could even push out some of the more veteran options.

Damn, people weren’t kidding when they said Edmonton was desperate for help up front. It’s a shame too because he was fun to watch in the limited minutes he played for Boston this year, really stepped up with energetic, defensive play when they needed it with all the injuries. I wish him the best with the Oilers.

I knew the second I saw he hit waivers that he’d be claimed. Absolutely showed that he deserved a bottom 6 role with solid play on both sides of the ice and being more than capable at the dot. I hope he can hold on to a NHL spot in Edmonton because he looks like he can be a solid contributor.

LOL of course they did….. poor poor Tardelli and the Edmonton Soilers….. how far the “mighty” have fallen. Sucks for Cave, guess the B’s really didn’t want the guy to stick around. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s BACK, after his upcoming release from Edmonton as we all know things DON’T WORK OUT in Soilers land.

Yeah, Trader Pete’s vehicle of choice has TWO accelerators & no brake pedal. Brick walls are not real impediments to him…If he hits the jackpot with Cave, he’ll demand EVERYBODY FORGET the other stupid, destructive moves…

I’m a proud oiler fan, even in bad times. I also live in the city. It’s not that things don’t work out here. It’s that management never does anything that should work out. Nobody was excited. He hemorrhaged the b’s cap and never won a trade. The headline on today’s main paper “Is there even one fan that’s not afraid of chiarelli’s next trade”. swear to god. Edmonton’s not cursed, it’s full of dogshit shot callers. hall for Larson? wtf? if you can’t get a fair d-man in return don’t make the move. lucic 5.5m 5yr? only mgmt wanted 5yr everyone else? 3yr. he’s painfully slow. Ebs for stone? jesus christ. then stone for spooner? only guy to lose a trade twice with same player. he’s gonna make an awful deal in next few days to save his job only to absolutely f$@k the cap up EVEN MORE in the future. other than that the oil are solid. sorry to rant. it wasn’t directed at you cause what you said is true, I just needed to vent. send me the bill. thank you. lol

jd goat is the village turd burglar, don’t beat yourself up about it, clarence. As you can see from his comment, it’s about random nonsense and completely irrelevant, sort of like his life in general. LOL
