I don’t think Boston-born players are wary of playing in Boston. I think they are wary of playing in Claude Julien’s system. I believe they view the system as one that hinders offensive development. Reilly Smith struggled in his last season in Boston, but then scored 25 goals last season. Seguin has blossomed in Dallas. Jimmy Hayes had improved every season in the NHL until last season when his numbers dropped. I think players look at that kind of stuff and are leery. On the other hand, offense wasn’t the problem for the Bruins last season. They were 3rd in the Eastern Conference with 240 goals for. Their problem was defensively. They gave up 230 goals, which was 5th worst in the Eastern Conference. It is just a perception that Julien’s system doesn’t allow for offensive improvement, but it is a perception that is widely believed

Have you read comments onany Maple Leafs blog? Apparently, according to their fans, anyone from the greater Toronto area is going to sign there (see Steven Stamkos, or John Tavares) while they get burnt by players like David Clarkson actually doing so. Boston is not the only city that has home town kids sign elsewhere when given the opportunity. Edmonton has seen this as well, see Jay Bouwemeester and his signing in Calgary as a recent evidence.
