Can Anaheim buy out bieksa before the expansion draft and take the subsequent cap hit for doing so? If they can, then it gives them more flexibility as far as who to protect.

Can they? Yes. Will they? Probably not. Bieksa is signed to a 35+ contract (for veterans) which offers little to no flexibility with buyouts. With one year left on his deal, Bieksa’s buyout would count in full, so $4MM, against the salary cap next year. That would be a lot of dead cap space for the Ducks to deal with, especially when they’ll need to replace whoever is selected in the Expansion Draft and find a new backup goalie with close to $70MM already tied up.

I can’t see either Anaheim or Minnesota taking on Krejci’s $7.25 million cap hit that runs through the 2020-21 season. He currently has a no-trade clause that runs through the 2018-19 season. While, I think he would waive it to go to either team, I don’t see how it works for either the Ducks or Wild cap wise.
