I’d take a Top 9 forward (preferably a C with face-off skills) a 2nd that turns into #1 if he re-signs and a ProspectTBNL based again on whether or not he resigns. That provides help for this year, at least a 2nd, and a prospect. They’re not going to do better unless he agrees to an extension beforehand and he’s shown no inclination to do so.

To my knowledge, teams can’t utilize a PTBNL like they do in baseball. All player components have to be named at the time of the trade and only picks can come with conditions attached.

In hockey, I believe it’s called “future considerations”. Of course, you may be right and those only apply to draft picks and/or cash.
