Having already expressed a desire to play for a contender, coupled with Sakic’s comments, all but guarantees that Iginla will be traded at or before the deadline.

He deserves it.

They have to get better. Younger is simply the only road to pursuing that when you’re already against the cap.

You need to get BETTER not necessarily younger. Getting younger usually means cheaper and kicking decisions down the road longer. Don’t go and trade your few good trading chips for garbage players and picks, instead build around them.

What can they build around them? The current core is clearly not good enough, and without moving big pieces like Landeskog and Duchene, there’s no real path to getting much better. It’s not like Soderberg and Iginla are going to return much. Landeskog I could understand keeping, his value is down and he’s under contract long term, but Duchene should be moved at the least. By the time the Avs’younger core (Sakic’s untouchables) might be ready to compete, Duchene would probably be gone anyway. Get a nice haul of young players/picks for him, and maybe they can build a better young core that will be ready in 2-3 years.

All the NHL GMs don’t do anything until the day before and the day of the deadline. Add the Vegas expansion draft to the mix coming up in June, and this league is going to be utter gridlock and stagnation until July 1st. Get used to a bunch of nothingness.
