Did it dawn on the writer that Fleury’s NMC makes a move during the season highly problamatic? The fifth, best and unmentioned solution is either persuading Fleury to accept a trade or deciding to move Murray not during the season but at the conclusion of the playoffs. There will be a window between the end of the playoffs and the expansion draft to shape rosters. As a Stanley Cup contender, Pittsburgh would be smart to keep both goaltenders and deal with the situation later rather than sooner.

Yes, Fleury’s no-movement clause is an issue. He isn’t likely going to agree to go to a non-playoff team & most playoff teams are up against the cap. The Stars may have interest, but they would have to move out Niemi or Lehtonen to create enough cap space & that probably would prove to be difficult. Also, there is no love lost between McPhee & the Penguins, stemming from McPhee’s time with Washington. The Penguins would really have to make it worth McPhee’s while for him not to take Murray. McPhee holds the cards in that situation. He controls everything. That has to be in Rutherford’s mind. That could be a reason he trades Murray in order to get something in return. Also, Murray doesn’t have any trade or movement clauses in his contract. That allows the Penguins to trade him to a team like Arizona or Carolina. It allows Rutherford to accept the best deal. He doesn’t have that option with Fleury

Ummmm seems to me that you’re forgetting that Tampa Bay is in the same situation!

There’s this thing called a buyout that can also happen with Fleury. There’s more options than trade Fleury, trade with Vegas, or lose Murray. Come on

lol, agree. they would need a prize return to trade murray (which the likelihood of it happening is very very slim).

If a trade can’t be worked out can’t the Pens just cut Fleury and eat the cost of his contract?
